RAPIDS’ WINNING STREAK CONTINUES
GRAND FALLS – The Rapids scored two power play goals in the third period on Friday night, breaking a 3-3 tie and winning their 4th game in a row in a 5-3 victory over the visiting Fredericton Red Wings.
Drew Toner was credited with the winning goal on a shot from Matthew MacKay at the 5-minute mark of the final period as the Rapids grabbed the lead for good. Tyler Boivin added the insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining in the contest.
Gio Dimattia got the start between the pipes, earning his 4th victory of the season as he stopped 23 shots.
With their 12th win of the season, the Rapids now total 29 points in the Eastlink North division standings, which is 6 more points than the Campbellton Tigers who occupy second spot.
After the game, head coach Brad Mackenzie praised his special teams which played a huge part in Friday night’s result.
“I thought we got better during each period tonight. Our special teams were key again with a performance of 4 stops in 4 tries on the penalty kill and 2 of 4 on the power play”, mentions the Rapids head coach.
“We got back to our style of hockey as the game moved along with more sustained offensive zone time and pressure.”
It was indeed a great effort by the Rapids on all facets of the game, notably on the defensive front. However, a few players had to leave the ice over the course of the game, including defenseman Zac Arsenault back in the second period.
Both teams got on the board early in the opening period. With only 1:27 after the first puck drop, the visitors took the lead when Brady Egan scored after coming around the Rapids’ net in possession of the puck, firing a perfect shot on the short side of goaltender Gio Dimattia.
The Rapids tied the score at 4:13 on an odd-man rush. Ethan Stuckless didn’t miss the opportunity in front of the net to register his 3rd goal in 6 games in a Grand Falls’ uniform.
The Red Wings took back the lead at 9:21 following a turnover in front of the Rapids’ crease. Nathan Kelly took control of a loose puck to give Fredericton a 2-1 lead.
The Rapids scored two quick goals in the middle frame as they took the lead for the first time. At 7:14, Drew Toner tallied his 9th of the season on a one-timer in front of the Fredericton net as Matthew MacKay, who played a strong game at both ends, assisted on the play. Then at 8:37, defenseman Vincent Drolet left his post at the blue line and fired a shot from the face off circle, beating goalie Andrew MacLeod.
There was more physicality to the second period as both teams made their presence felt by throwing the body and letting the opponent know that space to the middle of the ice would be restricted.
Through two periods of play, Grand Falls led in shots on goal, 19 to 18.
It took only 40 seconds of play in the third period for the Red Wings to tie the score. Sasha Charbonneau scored on a backhand shot after coming in on an odd man rush. However, the Rapids regained the lead with a power play goal at 5:04 on Matthew MacKay’s hard shot from the point. The goal was credited to Drew Toner. Then at 17:13, Tyler Boivin added another power play tally for Grand Falls after putting in a rebound past Andrew MacLeod. It was Boivin’s team leading 14th goal of the season.
The Rapids led the third period 12 to 8 in shots on goal and finished the game with a 31-26 advantage in that department.
Take note that Sunday afternoon’s contest which the Rapids were to play against the Edmundston Blizzard has been postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Both teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

LES RAPIDES POURSUIVENT LEUR SÉQUENCE VICTORIEUSE
GRAND-SAULT – Vendredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal, les Rapides ont marqué deux fois avec l’avantage d’un homme en troisième période, brisant ainsi une égalité de 3-3 pour finalement l’emporter au compte de 5-3 devant les Red Wings de Fredericton. Il s’agissait d’une 4e victoire consécutive pour la formation de Grand-Sault.
Drew Toner a été crédité du but victorieux à la 5e minute de jeu du troisième engagement suite au tir frappé de Matthew MacKay alors que les Rapides prenaient les devants pour de bon dans le match. Tyler Boivin a ajouté le but d’assurance avec moins de 3 minutes à écouler dans la rencontre.
Gio Dimattia a remporté pour sa part une 4e victoire cette saison devant le filet, repoussant 23 tirs au total.
Avec cette victoire, les Rapides augmentent à 6 points leur priorité au sommet du classement de la division Eastlink Nord. Grand-Sault totalise maintenant 29 points alors que Campbellton se situe au deuxième échelon avec 23 points. Il s’agissait également d’une 12e victoire cette saison pour la troupe de Brad Mackenzie. Ce dernier n’avait que de bons mots à la fin du match à l’endroit de ses unités spéciales.
« Nous avons su monter notre jeu d’un cran d’une période à l’autre ce soir. Nos unités spéciales ont joué un rôle important encore une fois alors que nous avons tenu l’adversaire en échec 4 fois en 4 opportunités sur le jeu de puissance alors qu’à notre tour, nous avons inscrit 2 buts en 4 tentatives en avantage numérique », mentionne l’entraîneur-chef des Rapides.
« Nous avons retourné à notre style habituel au fur et à mesure que le match se déroulait, appliquant davantage plus de pression en territoire offensif. »
Il s’agissait en effet d’une solide performance de la part des Rapides sur plusieurs facettes du jeu. Quelques joueurs ont cependant dû quitter la rencontre en cours de route, notamment le défenseur Zac Arsenault en deuxième période.
Les deux équipes ont marqué tôt lors de la période initiale. Il n’avait d’ailleurs que 1 :27 d’écoulés lorsque les visiteurs se sont inscrits au pointage pour la première fois. Brady Egan a fait scintiller la lumière après avoir habilement contourné le filet des Rapides en possession de la rondelle.
Ces derniers ont égalisé le pointage à 4 :13 lors d’une situation de surnombre en territoire adverse. Ethan Stuckless n’a pas raté l’occasion d’enregistrer son 3e but en 6 matchs cette saison avec la formation de Grand-Sault.
Les Red Wings ont cependant repris les devants à 9 :21 à la suite d’un revirement devant le filet des Rapides. Nathan Kelly s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre pour porter le compte 2-1 en faveur de Fredericton.
Les Rapides ont marqué deux buts en 1 :23 d’intervalle en deuxième période, prenant ainsi les devants pour la première fois de la rencontre. À 7 :14, Drew Toner a inscrit son 9e but de la campagne à l’aide d’un tir sur réception devant le filet des Red Wings alors que Matthew MacKay, qui a disputé un excellent match, se méritait une mention d’aide sur la séquence. Puis à 8 :37, le défenseur Vincent Drolet a quitté son poste à la ligne bleue pour ensuite diriger un tir du cercle des mises en jeu, trompant la vigilance du gardien Andrew MacLeod.
Le jeu est devenu plus physique en deuxième alors que les deux formations voulaient faire sentir leur présence en appliquant de solides mises en échec, tout en laissant très peu d’espace de manœuvre au centre de la patinoire.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, les Rapides menaient au chapitre des tirs au but, 19-18.
Après 40 secondes de jeu seulement en troisième période, les Red Wings ont nivelé la marque. Lors d’une descente à deux contre un, Sasha Charbonneau y est allé d’un tir du revers pour déjouer le gardien des Rapides, enregistrant ainsi son 7e filet de la campagne.
Toutefois, les locaux ont réussi à reprendre les devants à 5 :04 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Après une mise au jeu remporté en territoire adverse, Matthew MacKay a dirigé un tir puissant de la pointe en direction du filet. Le but fut crédité à Drew Toner, portant alors le compte 3-2 en faveur de Grand-Sault. Les Rapides ont ajouté un autre but en avantage numérique à 17 :13 lorsque Tyler Boivin a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet pour inscrire son 14e de la campagne, soit un sommet cette saison auprès de l’équipe.
Grand-Sault a dominé le troisième tiers temps 12-8 au chapitre des lancers au but et 31-26 au terme de trois périodes de jeu.
À noter que le match que les Rapides devaient disputer dimanche après-midi face au Blizzard d’Edmundston a été remis à une date ultérieure en raison des restrictions reliées à la pandémie de la COVID-19.
Ces deux mêmes formations sont prévues pour s’affronter à nouveau mardi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
