RAPIDS WIN THEIR THIRD GAME IN A ROW AS THEY DEFEAT THE TIGERS 4-2
CAMPBELLTON – The Rapids won their third consecutive game on Wednesday night in Campbellton, earning a 4-2 victory over the Tigers.
Drew Johnston, who was out of the lineup for the last three games, scored twice for Grand Falls. Matthew MacKay and Ethan Stuckless completed the scoring as the Rapids won on the road for a 7th time this season while adding their 11th victory in total.
Goaltender Nolan Boyd was once again a key figure in the game, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced as he picked up his 8th win between the pipes this season.
With Wednesday night’s win, the Rapids now lead the Tigers by 5 points for top spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Playing a team who had previously won 8 of its last 9 contests, the Rapids didn’t necessarily play their best game, but they they did what it took to skate away with the victory.
“I didn’t think we had our best effort tonight, but we found a way to get the job done”, says head coach Brad Mackenzie.
“Especially in the first two periods, I felt we lacked our usual level of energy and competitiveness. In the third, we cranked it up a bit and did a good job closing the game out.”
It was a very fast pace to the opening period as few stoppages of play were called. The Rapids were first to get on the board at 11:59 following a Tigers’ turnover in the neutral zone. Matthew MacKay came charging on an odd man rush and fired a shot that was initially blocked by a defenseman in front, but MacKay took the rebound to register his 7th goal of the season.
Campbellton answered back at 16:31 when Josh Crooks’ shot got by by goaltender Nolan Boyd. That tied the score through twenty minutes of play as Grand Falls dominated at that point in shots on goal, 11 to 10.
The Rapids took control of the game for a large portion of the second period as Campbellton was penalized on three occasions. Drew Johnston scored his second of the season for Grand Falls at 5:35 on a power play after sending a loose puck into the back of the net.
Ethan Stuckless pushed the lead to 3-1 at 9:13 after he took a rebound in front of the net on a shot from Julien Jacob coming from the point. For Stuckless, it was also his second goal since joining the Rapids.
The Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 at 14:35 on a perfect shot from the faceoff dot from Joakim Bergeron. Momentum shifted towards the Campbellton side after that goal, but Boyd made some key saves, enabling the Rapids to hold on to a one goal lead after two periods of play.
Only one goal was scored in the third period as Drew Johnston tallied his second of the game at the 14-minute mark. Johnston scored on a two-on-one break, sending a backhand shot past Pelletier for the insurance goal. Nolan Boyd came up with big saves when the margin was still at only one goal as he picked up the victory between the pipes. The Tigers, who sent 14 shots on net in the final period, finished the game with a 34 to 28 advantage in that department.
The Rapids return on home ice for two games this weekend. On Friday, they will host the Fredericton Red Wings for a 7:30 pm start at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre while on Sunday afternoon (3 pm), the Edmundston Blizzard will be in Grand Falls for another chapter of the Northwest rivalry.

LES RAPIDES DISPOSENT DES TIGRES ET REMPORTENT UN TROISIÈME MATCH DE SUITE
CAMPBELLTON – Les Rapides ont signé une troisième victoire consécutive mercredi soir à Campbellton, l’emportant au compte de 4-2 face aux Tigres.
Drew Johnston, de retour au jeu après raté les trois derniers matchs de l’équipe, a marqué à deux reprises pour les vainqueurs. Matthew MacKay et Ethan Stuckless ont complété le pointage pour Grand-Sault qui remportait du même coup une 7e victoire à l’étranger et une 11e au cumulatif cette saison.
Le gardien Nolan Boyd a encore une fois été solide, bloquant 32 lancers pour ainsi se mériter un 8e gain devant le filet.
Avec cette victoire, les Rapides augmentent leur priorité à 5 points sur Campbellton au sommet de la division Eastlink Nord.
Faisant face à un adversaire qui avait remporté précédemment 8 de ses 9 dernières sorties, les Rapides ont encore une fois trouvé le moyen de l’emporter, sans nécessairement avoir disputé leur meilleur match de la saison.
« Je ne crois pas que nous avons fourni notre meilleur effort ce soir, mais nous avons tout de même trouvé une façon de compléter le la tâche », mentionne l’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie.
« Surtout en première et deuxième période, nous n’avons pas offert notre niveau d’énergie habituel. En troisième, nous avons monté notre jeu d’un cran et nous avons tenu le coup de brillante façon pour nous assurer de la victoire. »
La première période s’est déroulée avec très peu d’arrêts de jeu. Les Rapides ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 11 :59, lors d’un revirement de la part des Tigres en territoire centrale. Matthew MacKay s’est alors amené en situation de surnombre et a dirigé un tir qui fut bloqué initialement par un défenseur devant le filet, mais il a été en mesure de reprendre la rondelle pour enregistrer son 7e filet de la campagne.
Les Tigres ont assuré la réplique à 16 :31 lorsque le tir de Josh Crooks n’a pu être maîtrisé par le gardien Nolan Boyd. C’était donc l’égalité après vingt minutes de jeu.
Grand-Sault a légèrement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but lors de l’engagement initial, 11-10.
Les Rapides ont pris contrôle du jeu en deuxième période alors que leurs adversaires ont été pénalisés à trois reprises. Drew Johnston en a profité pour inscrire son deuxième but avec les Rapides et son premier de la soirée alors qu’il a poussé une rondelle libre dans le fond de la cage à 5 :35 lors d’une supériorité numérique.
Ethan Stuckless a augmenté l’avance des visiteurs à 9 :13 après avoir pris un retour de lancer devant le filet sur un tir provenant du bâton de Julien Jacob. Pour Stuckless, il s’agissait également d’un deuxième but depuis qu’il s’est joint aux Rapides.
Les Tigres ont réussi à réduire l’écart à 14 :35 grâce à un tir parfait du cercle des mises en jeu de la part de Joakim Bergeron qui a trompé la vigilance du gardien Nolan Boyd. Le momentum a considérablement penché en faveur des locaux après ce but, mais Boyd a tenu le coup à quelques reprises pour permettre aux Rapides de retraiter au vestiaire avec une avance de 3-2 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Un seul but a été inscrit en troisième période, soit le deuxième du match de Drew Johnston à la 14e minute de jeu. Lors d’une descente à deux contre un, Johnston a réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Isaak Pelletier à l’aide d’un tir du revers, permettant ainsi aux Rapides d’ajouter un but d’assurance.
Nolan Boyd a dû se surpasser à quelques reprises lorsque l’écart n’était que d’un seul but, lui permettant ainsi de mériter la victoire devant le filet. Il a d’ailleurs dû affronter 14 lancers de la part des Tigres lors du troisième engagement.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 34-28 en faveur de Campbellton.
Les Rapides seront à domicile à deux reprises lors du prochain weekend. Vendredi soir, ils accueilleront les Red Wings de Fredericton à compter de 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal alors que dimanche après-midi (15h00), ils recevront la visite du Blizzard d’Edmundston.
