RAPIDS WIN THEIR SECOND GAME OF THE SEASON IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION
FREDERICTON – The Rapids scored six unanswered goals while sending a total of 43 shots on net in a deciding 9-3 victory Sunday afternoon in Fredericton against the Red Wings. Grand Falls also scored four times on the power play, including three goals in the final frame.
Tyler Boivin led the way offensively with 2 goals and 3 assists as the Rapids won for a second time this season and ended their weekend with a pick-up of 3 points in two games, which brings their total for the season to 7 pts.
Half of the goals scored on Sunday afternoon were registered in the opening period which happened to be a wide-open affair. The Rapids sent 18 shots on net and went ahead on two occasions, but the score was at a 3-3 deadlock after twenty minutes of play.
Tyler Boivin was the first Rapids’ player to get on the scoring sheet as he took control of a loose puck that came off the back boards, tallying his 5th of the season. Alex Cormier (his 2nd) and Jérémie Gagnon with his first goal of the campaign also scored for Grand Falls.
Connor McCluskey, Nathan Kelly and Brady Patterson replied for Fredericton who shot 8 times on goal in the opening frame.
The Rapids dominated puck possession and played much better defensively in the second period, allowing only 5 shots to their opponents. Note that Grand Falls did not allow a shot on goal to Fredericton in the first 9 minutes of play.
The Rapids regained the lead early in the period on Tyler Boivin’s power play goal, his second of the game, as he came into the slot and fired a wrister past goaltender Morgan Kini. Drew Toner, with his 4th of the season, made it 5-3 for the visitors at 18:08.
After two periods of play, Grand Falls led by two goals and were outshooting Fredericton, 29 to 13.
The Rapids added four more goals in the third period as physical play took over early on. Nick Abbott and Nash Smith scored only 19 seconds apart while Carter McCluskey added the fourth PP goal for the Rapids in the game at 7:50. Matthew MacKay scored the 9th goal for Grand Falls at the 14-minute mark.
After the game, Brad Mackenzie was very satisfied with his team’s performance and with good reason.
“It was one of our most complete games we’ve played this season,” mentions the head coach. “We received contributions from everyone and our compete level was high. I was proud of the way our guys stuck together when things got rough, without crossing the line of undisciplined play. Our guys were on a mission and the focus remained on the task at hand,” adds Mackenzie.
The Rapids finish the weekend on a high note and will return to action next Friday night in Campbellton for a 7pm matchup against the Tigers.

LES RAPIDES EXPLOSENT EN ATTAQUE DANS UNE VICTOIRE DÉCISIVE
FREDERICTON – Les Rapides ont marqué six buts sans réplique, tout en dirigeant un total de 43 lancers au filet, lors d’une victoire décisive de 9-3 remportée dimanche après-midi à Fredericton face aux Red Wings.
Le jeu de puissance a également été un facteur déterminant alors que les Rapides ont inscrit 4 buts en avantage numérique, dont 3 en troisième période.
Tyler Boivin a mené ce festival offensif avec une solide performance de 2 buts et 3 mentions d’aide. Les Rapides, qui remportent ainsi un deuxième gain cette saison, terminent leur week-end avec une récolte de 3 points en deux sorties, ce qui apporte leur total pour la saison à 7 points.
La moitié des buts enregistrés dimanche après-midi a été réussi lors des vingt premières minutes de jeu alors que l’offensive était à l’honneur. Les Rapides sont parvenus à prendre les devants à deux reprises au cours de l’engagement, mais ils ont dû retraiter au vestiaire avec une égalité de 3-3.
Tyler Boivin a été le premier à noircir la feuille de pointage du côté des Rapides lorsqu’il a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet. Il s’agissait d’un 5e but pour Boivin cette saison. Alex Cormier (son 2e) et Jérémie Gagnon avec son premier en saison régulière ont complété le pointage pour les visiteurs.
Connor McCluskey, Nathan Kelley et Brady Patterson ont assuré la riposte pour les Red Wings qui ont dirigé 8 tirs en direction du filet adverse.
Les Rapides ont dominé le temps de possession de la rondelle en deuxième période et ils ont offert un meilleur rendement en défensive, n’allouant que 5 lancers à leurs opposants. D’ailleurs, les Red Wings ont tiré pour la première fois sur le gardien Nolan Boyd que lors de la 9e minute de jeu de l’engagement.
Les Rapides ont repris les devants tôt en période sur le but de Tyler Boivin en supériorité numérique. Son tir de l’enclave est venu tromper la vigilance du gardien Morgan Kini. Drew Toner, avec son 4e filet de la campagne, a porté le compte 5-3 pour les visiteurs à 18 :08.
Les Rapides ont ajouté quatre buts en troisième période, dont trois avec l’avantage d’un homme alors que les esprits se sont échauffés quelque peu. Nick Abbott et Nash Smith ont chacun marqué à 19 secondes d’intervalle alors que Carter McCluskey ajoutait le 8e but des siens, également en supériorité numérique à 7 :50. Matthew MacKay est celui qui a ajouté le 9e filet pour Grand-Sault à 14 :01.
Après la partie, Brad Mackenzie était très satisfait du rendement de sa troupe et avec raison.
« Il s’agissait de l’un de nos matchs les plus complets disputés cette saison, » mentionne l’entraîneur-chef. « Nous avons reçu une bonne contribution de la part de tous nos joueurs et le niveau compétitif était à la hauteur. Je suis fier de la façon qu’ils ont pu demeurer ensemble lorsque le jeu est devenu plus rude, sans toutefois être indisciplinés. Notre équipe était en mission et le focus était à point, » mentionne Mackenzie.
Les Rapides terminent donc leur week-end sur une note positive et seront de retour en action vendredi soir prochain à Campbellton alors qu’ils croiseront le fer avec les Tigres à compter de 19h00.
