RAPIDS WIN IN OVERTIME AGAINST THE RED WINGS
FREDERICTON – Adam Fowlow’s 9th goal of the season in the overtime frame gave the Grand Falls Rapids a 4-3 victory over the Fredericton Red Wings in a Sunday afternoon MHL contest played at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
Dominic Leblanc made a great move at the other end to free himself from a defender, then delivered a perfect pass to Fowlow who scored the game winner at 4:12 of extra time on a one-timer.
The Rapids led 3-0 at the 8-minute mark of the third period before the Red Wings came back with three unanswered goals, tying the score with only 45 seconds remaining in regulation time.
Gio DiMattia was a key figure in the game for the Rapids, making a total of 41 saves. His solid performance helped the Rapids to a key intra-divisional victory as they are now 3 points behind 4th place in the Eastlink North division standings held by the Campellton Tigers. It was also the Rapids 3rd win of the season on the road and their 3rd overtime victory in as many tries this season.
The Rapids had a good opening first period as they controlled the pace of play while outshooting their opponents 11 to 7.
Grand Falls got on the board with only 29 seconds following the first puck drop. On a two on one break, Dominic Leblanc found the back of the net for his 17th of the season. Yannic Bastarache and Joachim Matulu assisted on the tally.
The Rapids cashed in on their first power play opportunity of the game at 12:39. Defenseman Jonathan Cormier sent a shot on net that was initially blocked by netminder Mathias Savoie, but Max Chisholm pounced on the rebound, sending the puck into an open net.
Grand Falls was ahead 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.
The second period belonged to Gio DiMattia who was sharp between the pipes, making a number of key saves and blocking all 19 shots he faced. The Red Wings went on consecutive power plays early in the period, even going on a 5 on 3 advantage for 20 seconds. The Rapids held their opponents scoreless and also came close to adding to their lead on a couple of occasions.
Through two periods of play, Fredericton was ahead 26-18 in shots on goal.
The Rapids added to their lead in the third period on Yannic Bastarache’s 10th of season at 8:01. Bastarache took advantage of a miscue by the Red Wings in their own end and caught goaltender Mathias Savoie out of position, giving Grand Falls a 3-0 lead.
All seemed well for the Rapids at that point, but the Red Wings replied less than a minute later with their first goal of the contest. Noah Standing was finally able to beat DiMattia on a one-timer shot, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Then at 17:59, Gabriel Bernier scored on a rebound in front of the Rapids’ net to bring the score 3-2. That goal was followed by Matt McRae’s game tying goal at 19:15.
Fredericton dominated 44-28 in the shots on goal department. Both teams had four power play opportunities in the game, but only one goal was scored which came from Grand Falls’ Max Chisholm in the opening frame.
The Rapids record on the season is now 9 wins and 11 losses for 18 points. They will play two games at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre next weekend: Friday night, the Edmundston Blizzard are in town for a 7:30pm start and on Sunday afternoon, the Rapids will host the Campbellton Tigers (3pm).

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT EN SURTEMPS FACE AUX RED WINGS
FREDERICTON – Le 9e but de la saison de Adam Fowlow, inscrit à 4 :12 en surtemps, a procuré aux Rapides de Grand-Sault une victoire de 4-3 dimanche après-midi aux dépens des Red Wings de Fredericton.
Dominic Leblanc est celui qui a initié le but victorieux, transportant la rondelle en zone adverse pour ensuite servir une passe parfaite devant le filet à Fowlow qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
Les Rapides avaient pris une avance de 3-0 à la 8e minute de jeu en troisième période avant que les Red Wings reviennent de l’arrière pour enregistrer trois buts sans réplique, égalisant ainsi le pointage avec seulement 45 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire.
Gio DiMattia a été une figure dominante du côté des Rapides, bloquant un total de 41 rondelles. Sa solide performance a permis aux Rapides de remporter un match intra-division de grande importance alors qu’ils ont réussi à réduire l’écart à 3 points sur les Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Il s’agissait également d’une 3e victoire pour les Rapides cette saison à l’étranger et un 3e gain en surtemps contre aucun revers.
Les Rapides ont connu une excellente première période alors qu’ils ont été en mesure de contrôler le rythme et le temps de possession de la rondelle, tout en dominant au chapitre des tirs au but, 11-7.
Il n’y avait seulement que 29 secondes d’écoulées au cadran lorsque Dominic Leblanc a procuré les devants aux visiteurs sur une descente à deux contre un en zone adverse. Il s’agissait du 17e filet de la campagne pour Leblanc cette saison. Yannic Bastarache et Joachim Matulu se sont chacun mérité des mentions d’aide sur le but.
Puis à 12 :39, les Rapides ont su tirer profit de leur première supériorité numérique de la partie pour doubler leur avance. Le tir du défenseur Jonathan Cormier a été initialement bloqué par le gardien Mathias Savoie, mais Max Chisholm a pris le retour tout près du filet pour inscrire son 4e but de la campagne.
Le héros de la deuxième période a été sans contredit Gio DiMattia qui a dû se surpasser à maintes reprises devant le filet, bloquant tous les 19 tirs à lui faire face. Les Red Wings ont été très menaçants, surtout lors de deux supériorités numériques consécutives, dont un à 5 contre 3 pendant une vingtaine de secondes. Les Rapides ont toutefois su fermer la porte de brillante façon et ils sont même passés bien près d’ajouter à leur avance à quelques occasions au cours de l’engagement.
Après quarante minutes de jeu, Fredericton était en avance 26-18 en ce qui a trait aux tirs au but.
Les Rapides ont ajouté à leur avance en troisième période sur le 10e filet de la campagne de Yannic Bastarache, enregistré à 8 :01. Bastarache a profité du fait que le gardien adverse était hors position devant son filet en raison d’une rondelle sautillante qui a effectué un bond capricieux devant l’enclave.
Tout semblait aller pour le mieux pour les Rapides à ce moment précis du match, mais les Red Wings ont réussi à ajouter un premier but au tableau en l’espace de 52 secondes. Noah Standing est celui qui a finalement pu tromper la vigilance de Gio DiMattia sur un tir sur réception.
Puis à 17 :59, Gabriel Bernier portait la marque 3-2 à l’aide d’un retour de lancer devant le filet. Le but égalisateur de Matt McRae est survenu à 19 :15 pour ainsi forcer la prolongation.
Fredericton a dominé 44-28 au chapitre des tirs au but dans cette rencontre. Chaque équipe a obtenu quatre occasions de marquer en supériorité numérique, mais seule les Rapides en ont profité sur le but de Max Chisholm en première période.
Les Rapides portent maintenant leur fiche à 9 victoires et 11 revers pour 18 points. Ces derniers seront de retour à domicile pour deux matchs le week-end prochain : vendredi soir ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 19h30 alors que dimanche après-midi, ça sera au tour des Tigres de Campbellton de s’amener au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal pour un match en après-midi (15h00).
