RAPIDS WIN FOURTH CONSECUTIVE GAME ON HOME ICE
GRAND FALLS – Two power play goals in the final frame on Friday night propelled the Grand Falls Rapids to a 4-2 victory over the Fredericton Red Wings in a clash between two Eastlink North division rivals.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the third period, Mathis Huot and Jack Dickie scored in a span of less than 3 minutes, both with the man advantage, as Grand Falls held on for its third win in a row and a fourth consecutive victory on home ice.
Marc-Antoine Belzile and Bryce Thomson completed the scoring for the Rapids while Slava Melikov and Dell Welton tallied for the visitors.
It was a tight defensive battle from beginning to end as the Rapids held their opponents to 26 shots on goal while allowing no power play opportunities to the Red Wings, finishing the game with no minor penalties and one major penalty for fighting.
Goaltender Joshua Fleming was solid once again between the pipes, earning his third consecutive victory.
Marc-Antoine Belzile opened the scoring for the Rapids at 7:42 of the opening period with an accurate wrister from the slot. It was Belzile’s 2nd goal of the season as Yannic Bastarache obtained the lone assist on a great feed from the faceoff circle.
Shots were 12-7 in favour of Grand Falls after twenty minutes of play.
The Red Wings had momentum going their way for a major part of the second period, which resulted in the tying goal coming at 16:57 from the stick of Slava Melikov, leaving no chance for the Rapids’ netminder to react.
After two periods of play, the Rapids led 18-17 in shots on goal with the scored tied 1-1.
No goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of play of the third period. Teams were taking care of the puck and tried to avoid defensive miscues which could lead to the go-ahead goal.
The turning point of the game occurred only minutes after (at 11:56 and 14:35) as the Rapids scored two power play goals, taking a 3-1 lead:
Mathis Huot send a shot top shelf on Red Wings netminder Mathias Savoie for his 3rd goal of the season and on a screen shot, defenseman Jack Dickie tallied his first of the campaign.
The Red Wings did respond at 16:51 with Dell Welton’s goal from a beautiful cross-ice pass from Logan Carruthers, but the Rapids added their fourth tally of the night at 19:43 in an empty net. Bryce Thomson was the recipient of the insurance goal, his 3rd of the season.
The victory enables Grand Falls to jump slightly ahead of the Red Wings in the standings. Both teams have 10 points to their credit, but Fredericton has lost one more game than the Rapids who will travel to Campbellton on Sunday for a 3pm matchup with the Tigers.

LES RAPIDES REMPORTENT UNE QUATRIÈME VICTOIRE CONSÉCUTIVE À DOMICILE
GRAND-SAULT – Deux buts en supériorité numérique de la part des Rapides en troisième période leur a permis de l’emporter au compte de 4-2 vendredi soir devant les Red Wings de Fredericton. Tout près de 700 spectateurs étaient au rendez-vous lors de cet affrontement intra-division disputé au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Avec le pointage à égalité 1-1 lors du troisième vingt, Mathis Huot et Jack Dickie ont marqué en moins de 3 minutes d’intervalle, chacun avec l’avantage d’un homme, pour procurer une priorité de deux buts aux locaux.
Marc-Antoine Belzile et Bryce Thomson ont complété le pointage pour les Rapides qui remportaient un troisième match d’affilé et un quatrième gain consécutif à domicile.
Slava Melikov et Dell Welton ont assuré la réplique des Red Wings.
Il s’agissait d’un duel défensif du début jusqu’à la toute fin alors que les Rapides n’ont accordé que 26 lancers à leurs opposants. Ce qui est encore plus significatif toutefois est le fait que la troupe de Greg Leland n’a écopé d’aucune pénalité mineure dans cette rencontre, ne permettant aucunement aux Red Wings de se retrouver sur le jeu de puissance.
Le gardien Joshua Fleming a encore une fois été à la hauteur devant le filet, se méritant un troisième gain consécutif depuis son retour au jeu.
Marc-Antoine Belzile a été le premier à noircir la feuille de pointage pour les Rapides, soit à 7 :42 en première période. Son tir des poignets a battu le gardien Mathias Savoie dans la partie supérieure, inscrivant ainsi son 2e but de la campagne. Yannic Bastarache, qui a servi une passe parfaite à Belzile dans l’enclave, s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le premier but des siens.
Après vingt minutes de jeu, les tirs au but étaient 12-7 en faveur des Rapides.
Les Red Wings ont obtenu le momentum pour la majeure partie du deuxième engagement, ce qui a mené au but égalisateur de Slava Melikov à 16 :57. Ce dernier a laissé partir un tir parfait qui n’a donné aucune chance au gardien Fleming.
Après deux périodes de jeu, le pointage était à égalité 1-1, mais les Rapides étaient légèrement en avance au chapitre des lancers, 18-17.
Aucun but ne fut enregistré lors des 10 premières minutes de jeu en troisième période. Les deux formations se concentraient surtout à éviter les erreurs et à protéger la rondelle autant que possible.
Le point tournant de la partie s’est produit quelques minutes plus tard, soit à 11 :56 et 14 :35, alors que les Rapides ont fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises en supériorité numérique : Mathis Huot a marqué sur un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet, son 3e de la saison, alors que le défenseur Jack Dickie a compté à l’aide d’un tir voilé provenant de la pointe.
Fredericton a assuré la réplique à 16 :51 avec le but de Dell Welton sur une passe transversale de Logan Carruthers.
Bryce Thomson est celui qui a ajouté le 4e but de Grand-Sault, et ce, dans une cage déserte à 19 :43.
Cette victoire permet aux Rapides de grimper au 5e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. Même si Grand-Sault et Fredericton se retrouvent avec 10 points chacun, les Red Wings ont subi un revers de plus que les Rapides.
À noter que ces derniers se dirigeront du côté de Campbellton dimanche après-midi (15h00).
