RAPIDS’ WEEKLY REPORT – March 23
The Rapids put an end last Sunday to their fourth season in the league, finishing in 5th position in the Eastlink North standings with a record of 14 wins, 23 losses and 2 overtime defeats for a total of 30 points. They finish with a .500 home record (9-9-2) and a record of 5 wins and 14 losses on the road.
As mentioned previously in these weekly reports, it is hard to analyze the team’s season only by its performance in the standings. Even though great team leaders left at the trade deadline, the addition of new players had an impact on the way the Rapids played down the stretch. They were winning games against top teams in the league and dominating their opponents in shots on goal, which was a major issue at the beginning of the season. Goaltending was solid, so did the defense in certain games where they would make it difficult for the opposing team to gain any momentum offensively.
Most of the team will be back next season. Those who are not eligible to return are Joakim Bergeron, Morgan Kini, Drew Johnston, Cameron Brown and captain Adam Fowlow. The core that returns should make this team competitive and there should be no reason to believe that a playoff run is impossible.
As the Rapids await the MHL draft which will be held in early summer, there is hope that things are starting to turn for the best. As word about the team’s possible sale or departure was spreading around, the organization is putting an end to those rumors by announcing its return to Grand Falls in 2022-2023. All the different committees are at work already as they prepare for an exciting season.
RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK:
The Rapids finished their season with three road games, including two in Nova Scotia in the middle of last week.
Wednesday night in Truro, they avenged their defeat from the previous week on home ice by skating away with a 4-1 victory over the Bearcats. Joakim Bergeron and Drew Johnston gave the Rapids a 2-1 lead late in the second period while Adam Fowlow and Yannic Bastarache completed the scoring. Gio DiMattia made a total of 26 saves for his 12th victory of the season between the pipes.
Thursday night in Pictou County, the Weeks Crushers scored 4 third period goals, defeating the Rapids by a score of 7-3.
Yannic Bastarache led the way offensively for the Rapids by scoring all three goals.
Then on Sunday afternoon in Fredericton, The Red Wings took a 3-0 lead through two periods of play to finally defeat the Rapids by a score of 7-1. Drew Johnston scored for Grand Falls, his 7th of the season.
AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR THE 2021-2022 SEASON
GRAND FALLS – The Grand Falls Rapids held their annual awards’ banquet on Friday night. Players were rewarded for their great play on the ice and at the academic level.
Following is the list of recipients for this past season:
TOP SCORER : Dominic Leblanc
Leblanc’s record now stands at 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points in 38 games played. He is ranked 7th in the league among the best scorers.
TOP FORWARD : Dominic Leblanc
Leblanc is a complete forward as he is also very efficient on special teams. He has collected 10 points this season on the power play while scoring 4 winning goals.
TOP DEFENSEMAN : Keegan Hunt
Hunt is a key part of the Rapids defensive unit and he is also considered one of the top defenseman in the MHL. His record of 2g and 5a shows also how efficient he is supporting the offense when needed.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER : Gio DiMattia
All season long, DiMattia showed incredible skills between the pipes, making key saves at the right moments, contributing greatly to his team’s success. DiMattia’s goals against average is currently at 3.69.
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER : Yannic Bastarache
As the second leading scorer on the Rapids, Bastarache had a very productive month of March with 9 goals and 2 assists. His totals for the season are at 21 goals, 20 assists for 41 points.
ROOKIES OF THE YEAR : Jonathan Cormier and Joachim Matulu
These two rookie defensemen had a great season for the Rapids, showing how well they have adapted to a junior A caliber. Matulu scored 3 goals this season on the power play while Cormier has 6 points (1g 5a) in 37 games.
THE UNSUNG HERO : Adam Fowlow
As a captain this season, Fowlow showed great leadership skills and was an important part to the Rapids’ offensive unit. Thanks to his size and skills around the opposing net, Fowlow has collected 20 points this season (11g 9a), while scoring once while his team was playing shorthanded.
FANS’ CHOICE : Alexis Cournoyer
Cournoyer is an explosive forward, showing all season long his great speed and puck control while being very good around the opponent’s net. In 29 games played thus far this season, he has 23 points to his credit (7g 16a) while scoring 2 power play goals.
MICHAUD PETROLEUM CUP : Dominique Leblanc
Leblanc wins this award by earning the most points during the presentation of the three stars at the end of the game.
STUDENT PLAYER : Bryce Thomson
Thomson is an excellent hockey player, but also a great student at the academic level. In 29 games this season, Thomson has a record of 1g and 4a. This season was his first in junior A and with the Rapids.

COMPTE-RENDU DES RAPIDES – 23 mars
Les Rapides ont mis un terme à leur saison 2021-2022 dimanche dernier, leur quatrième dans la LHM. Ces derniers terminent avec un dossier de 14 victoires, 23 revers et 2 défaites en surtemps pour un total de 30 points. Leur fiche sur les patinoires adverses est de 5 victoires et 14 revers alors que l’équipe joue pour une fiche de .500 à domicile (9-9-2).
Tel que mentionné lors des rapports précédents, il est difficile d’analyser la performance de l’équipe par rapport uniquement à son classement final. Même si certains leaders ont quitté la formation lors de la date limite des échanges, les ajouts de nouveaux joueurs ont eu un impact majeur envers la performance de l’équipe lors de la dernière portion du calendrier régulier. En effet, les Rapides ont remporté quelques matchs face à des formations de premier plan dans le circuit et ont réussi à dominer leurs adversaires au chapitre des tirs au but, ce qui était difficile dans leur cas en début de campagne. Les gardiens de but ont été solides, tout comme la défensive qui a réussi à rendre la tâche très difficile par moment auprès de l’équipe adverse.
Beaucoup de joueurs de l’édition 2021-2022 seront de retour lors de la prochaine campagne. Ceux qui ne sont pas éligibles à y retourner sont Joakim Bergeron, Morgan Kini, Drew Johnston, Cameron Brown, William Théberge ainsi que le capitaine Adam Fowlow. Le noyau qui revient pour l’an prochain rendra cette équipe très compétitive et il n’y a aucune raison de douter qu’une place en séries est impossible.
Alors que les Rapides attendent le repêchage annuel du circuit qui aura lieu au début de l’été, il y a beaucoup d’espoir que tout ira pour le mieux avec cette formation. Alors que les rumeurs ont circulé pendant un certain temps sur la vente ou le déménagement possible de l’équipe, l’organisation tient à préciser que celle-ci sera bel et bien de retour à Grand-Sault pour la saison 2022-2023. D’ailleurs, les différents comités sont déjà à l’œuvre dans le but de préparer la prochaine campagne qui s’annonce très excitante.
RÉSULTATS DE LA DERNIÈRE SEMAINE:
Les Rapides ont terminé leur saison avec trois matchs sur la route la semaine dernière.
Mercredi soir à Truro, ils ont réussi à venger leur défaite encaissée la semaine précédente face aux Bearcats, l’emportant au compte de 4-1. Joakim Bergeron et Drew Johnston ont procuré aux Rapides une avance de 2-1 tard en deuxième période alors que Adam Fowlow et Yannic Bastarache ont complété le pointage. Gio DiMattia a effectué 26 arrêts pour enregistrer sa 12e victoire cette saison devant le filet.
Jeudi soir dans le compté de Pictou, les Weeks Crushers ont marqué quatre buts en troisième période, en route vers un gain de 7-3.
Yannic Bastararche a connu tout un match offensivement pour les Rapides, récoltant un tour du chapeau.
Puis dimanche après-midi à Fredericton, les Red Wings ont pris une avance de 3-0 après deux périodes de jeu pour l’emporter au compte de 7-1. Drew Johnston est celui qui a inscrit le filet des Rapides, son 7e de la saison.
LES RAPIDES RÉCOMPENSENT LEURS JOUEURS LES PLUS MÉRITANTS
GRAND-SAULT– Les Rapides de Grand-Sault ont tenu vendredi soir dernier leur banquet annuel de fin de saison. Pour l’occasion, plusieurs joueurs ont été récompensés pour leurs accomplissements sur la patinoire ainsi que pour leur excellence académique.
Voici la liste des récipiendaires pour la saison 2021-2022 :
MEILLEUR COMPTEUR : Dominic Leblanc
Leblanc détient présentement une fiche de 22 buts et 28 mentions d’aide pour 50 points en 38 parties de disputées. Il se situe au 7e rang parmi les meilleurs pointeurs de la LHM.
MEILLEUR JOUEUR OFFENSIF : Dominic Leblanc
Leblanc brille également sur plusieurs facettes du jeu en attaque. Il a d’ailleurs récolté 10 points en avantage numérique jusqu’à présent, tout en inscrivant 4 buts gagnants cette saison.
MEILLEUR DÉFENSEUR : Keegan Hunt
Hunt est l’un des piliers de la brigade défensive chez les Rapides, figurant même parmi l’un des meilleurs du circuit à sa position. Il est également très doué pour appuyer l’attaque au besoin, récoltant 7 points à sa fiche cette saison (2b 5p).
JOUEUR LE PLUS UTILE : Gio DiMattia
Tout au long de la saison, DiMattia a démontré des compétences incroyables devant le filet, effectuant plusieurs arrêts clés qui a permis à son équipe de soutirer des victoires. Il affiche présentement une moyenne de buts alloués de 3,69.
JOUEUR LE PLUS AMÉLIORÉ : Yannic Bastarache
Deuxième meilleur compteur de l’équipe cette saison, Bastarache a connu un mois de mars fort productif avec 9 buts et 2 mentions d’aide à sa fiche. Il totalise jusqu’à présent 21 buts et 20 mentions d’aide pour 41 points.
RECRUS DE L’ANNÉE : Jonathan Cormier et Joachim Matulu
Ces deux défenseurs ont connu toute une saison avec les Rapides, démontrant à quel point ils ont su s’adapter aussi rapidement à un calibre junior A. Matulu a marqué 3 buts en avantage numérique cette saison alors que Cormier a récolté 1b et 5p en 37 parties.
JOUEUR LE PLUS SOUS-ESTIMÉ : Adam Fowlow
Nommé capitaine de l’équipe cette saison, Fowlow a démontré beaucoup de leadership. Il a été un joueur important pour l’équipe sur le plan offensif, autant par son gabarit que par sa production en attaque. Il a récolté 11b et 9p pour 20 points cette saison, dont 1 but en désavantage numérique.
CHOIX DES PARTISANS : Alexis Cournoyer
Cournoyer est un joueur très explosif en attaque et possède de très bonnes qualités pour manier et contrôler la rondelle, tout en étant très efficace autour du filet adverse. En 29 matchs de joués, il a récolté 23 points à sa fiche, soit 7b et 16p, ainsi que 2 buts en avantage numérique.
COUPE MICHAUD PETROLEUM : Dominique Leblanc
Leblanc se mérite cette récompense pour avoir accumulé le plus de points lors de la présentation des trois étoiles de la partie.
JOUEUR ÉTUDIANT : Bryce Thomson
En plus d’être un excellent joueur de hockey, Thomson est également un étudiant hors pair, étant très doué au niveau académique. Sa fiche avec les Rapides cette saison est de 1b et 4p en 29 parties.
