RAPIDS’ WEEKLY REPORT – February 8th
Tuesday night’s victory in Summerside was exactly what was needed to get the team going in the right direction. It was a complete team effort as the intensity level was present from start to finish against one of the top four teams in the league.
The big guns also got going as Yannic Bastarache scored twice, Ben Diamond tallied his 20th of the season and Dominic LeBlanc finished the game with 1 goal and 1 assist, including the game winner mid-way into the third period.
The team scored two power play goals and only trailed once in the contest, contrary to the previous five games where they had to play catch-up hockey before hitting the ice in the second period.
Grand Falls was still behind in the shots on goal department on Tuesday night, but by a very slim margin of 30 to 29. Goaltender Charles-Antoine Julien, acquired recently by the team, earned his first victory between the pipes.
For the purpose of this report, this win could not have come at a better time also… writing about the three previous defeats that the team suffered since last Wednesday would have been very less pleasant, but if the team can build on Tuesday’s game to start a little winning streak, that would most certainly get the Rapids back in the playoff hunt.
Greg Leland’s squad plays four games on the schedule this week, all intra-division games. Grand Falls starts Thursday night a home and home series against the Fredericton Red Wings, a team that is desperately chasing the Rapids for 5th spot in the Eastlink North division standings. The Rapids will host the Red Wings on Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as well as the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon. Then on Tuesday night in Miramichi, the Rapids and the Timberwolves square off for an important matchup with playoff implications at stake.
This stretch of games will not be an easy task for a team that has gone through difficult times lately and is desperately trying to straighten things out. Not only did they lose some points in the standings during the last couple of weeks, but they also lost two defensemen as the Dickie brothers have left the team. Alexandre Michaud, an affiliate high school player from the Thomas-Albert Élites, has been great filling out the void at the blue line.
From now until next Tuesday, the standings can have a very different look… let’s just hope it goes the Rapids’ way.

RAPIDS’ NOTES:
*The Rapids’ record now stands at 17 wins and 21 losses on the season for a total of 34 points. They trail the Miramichi Timberwolves by 10 points for 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings and with two games in hand.
The Edmundston Blizzard hold top spot in the division with 53 points, 1 more than the Campbellton Tigers who sit in second spot with 52 points. Summerside is not far behind with 51 points.
*In the Eastlink South, the Yarmouth Mariners have an impressive record of 30 wins and only 9 losses on the season as they total 61 points. That is 15 points better than the team holding second spot in the division, the Truro Bearcats. Yarmouth is actually the only team thus far that has secured a playoff spot.
Teams that follow in order in the Eastlink South division standings are: Valley, Pictou County, Amherst and South Shore.
*Yannic Bastarache added to his season total in the scoring department as he currently stands in 10th position among the league’s leading scorers with a record of 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points.
Ben Diamond is 20th on the MHL scoring list with 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points.
Dominic LeBlanc, who also had a great week for the Rapids offensively, is the team’s third leading scorer with a record of 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points.
*Yannic Bastarache is now tied for second in the league in power play goals with 12. Ben Diamond is tied for third with 10 PP goals to his credit. Diamond also shares second spot in the MHL for most shorthanded goals this season (2).

COMPTE-RENDU DES RAPIDES – 8 février
La victoire acquise mardi soir à Summerside ne pouvait pas arriver à un meilleur moment pour les Rapides. Il s’agissait d’un bel effort collectif alors que l’intensité était présente du début jusqu’à la toute fin du match face à l’une des quatre formations de tête du circuit.
Les gros canons en attaque ont largement contribué : Yannic Bastarache a obtenu un doublé, Ben Diamond a inscrit son 20e filet de la campagne et Dominic LeBlanc a terminé la rencontre avec une performance de 1 but et 1 mention d’aide, dont le filet victorieux mi-chemin en troisième période.
Grand-Sault a fait bouger les cordages à deux reprises en avantage numérique et n’a tiré de l’arrière au pointage qu’une seule fois, contrairement aux cinq matchs précédents où l’on devait pratiquement toujours jouer du hockey de rattrapage avant d’entreprendre le deuxième vingt.
L’on a légèrement tiré de l’arrière au chapitre des tirs au but (30-29), mais c’est tout de même plus encourageant de ce côté. Le gardien Charles-Antoine Julien, acquis tout récemment par la formation, a remporté sa première victoire devant le filet, repoussant 27 tirs.
L’auteur de ces lignes est très heureux également de cette victoire, car au lieu de souligner les trois revers encaissés par l’équipe depuis le dernier rapport hebdomadaire, il est beaucoup plus plaisant de sortir le positif d’un match qui, souhaitons-le, permettra aux Rapides de revenir à nouveau dans la course pour une place en séries.
La troupe de Greg Leland doit disputer quatre parties d’ici mardi prochain, tous des rencontres intra-division. Les Rapides seront à Fredericton jeudi soir pour disputer la victoire aux Red Wings alors que le lendemain, les Red Wings s’amèneront au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal. Dimanche après-midi, ça sera au tour des Tigres de Campbellton de rendre visite aux Rapides. Finalement, ces derniers disputeront un match d’extrême importance mardi prochain du côté de Miramichi.
Cette séquence de matchs ne sera pas facile pour une formation qui a connu sa part de difficultés récemment. Non seulement les Rapides ont échappé quelques points précieux au classement au cours des dernières semaines, mais l’on a aussi perdu les services de deux défenseurs en cours de route alors que les frères Dickie ont quitté l’équipe. Alexandre Michaud, un joueur affilié provenant de l’équipe interscolaire les Élites de Thomas-Albert, a été à la hauteur afin de compenser pour le manque d’effectifs auprès de la brigade défensive.
D’ici mardi prochain, le classement risque d’avoir une allure bien différente que celle que l’on connaît présentement… souhaitons seulement que tout ira pour le mieux du côté des Rapides.

Ben Diamond se retrouve au 20e échelon sur cette liste avec une fiche de 20 buts et 25 mentions d’assistance pour 45 points.
Dominic LeBlanc est pour sa part le troisième meilleur compteur des Rapides avec 17 buts et 18 mentions d’aide pour 35 points.
*Yannic Bastarache se retrouve à égalité au second rang pour les buts enregistrés en avantage numérique dans le circuit (12). Ben Diamond partage le troisième rang à ce chapitre avec 10 buts en AN. Diamond se retrouve également à égalité au deuxième rang de la ligue pour les buts marqués en infériorité numérique avec 2.
