RAPIDS GET BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN WITH A 4-3 VICTORY AGAINST THE RAMBLERS
AMHERST – Yannic Bastarache scored a power play goal with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation time, as the Grand Falls Rapids came through with a 4-3 victory Friday night on the road against the Amherst Ramblers.
It was a 10th goal this season for Bastarache as well as a 6th power play goal and a 3rd winning tally to his credit. His shot from the face off circle beat Ramblers’ netminder Jacob Leblanc as Evan Bellamy and Dominic Leblanc both assisted on the winning goal.
Ben Diamond, Ian Dickie and Evan Bellamy completed the scoring for Grand Falls. Alexis Dubé scored a pair for the Ramblers.
With the win, the Rapids jump ahead of the Edmundston Blizzard in the Eastlink North standings. Greg Leland’s squad is now tied for 5th spot with the Fredericton Red Wings as both teams total 14 points, 1pt less than the Miramichi Timberwolves and Campbellton Tigers who share second spot. It was also the Rapids’ 5th victory in their last 6 games as they now hold a .500 record at 7 wins and 7 losses on the season.
Scoring started early in the contest as both teams got on the board before the 8-minute mark of the opening frame.
Ben Diamond put the Rapids in the lead at 5:44 with a redirection in front of the Amherst net. It was Diamond’s 8th of the season.
Gavin Watt tied the score at 7:33, taking advantage of a bad bounce from behind the boards to beat Rapids’ goaltender Frédéric Plourde.
Two more goals were scored before the end of the period. Ian Dickie, with his first of the season, gave Grand Falls a 2-1 advantage at 11:41 with a perfect shot to the blocker side of Leblanc.
Then with less than two minutes remaining in the period (18:17), former St.Quentin Castors’ player Alexis Dubé showed his great speed and skills as he scored on a partial breakaway with the man advantage, tying the score at 2-2.
Grand Falls slightly outshot their opponents in the period, 12 to 11.
Only one goal was scored in the second period as it came at 14:44 from the stick of defenseman Evan Bellamy whose wrist shot from the point found the back of the net through traffic. It was a power play tally, the Rapids’ 19th of the season.
The Ramblers had an opportunity to take the lead early in the period as Alexis Dubé was awarded a penalty shot, but Frédéric Plourde made the save.
After two periods of play, the Rapids held a 3-2 lead and a 25 to 18 edge in shots on goal.
Alexis Dubé was not done however as he responded with the tying goal for Amherst at 4:22 of the third period. It was his second of the game and his 4th of the season.
The Rapids’ thought they had taken the lead at the 11-minute mark of the frame when Joachim Matulu’s shot appeared to find the back of the net, but it was waved off by the officials. Rapids’ fans who had made the trip were disheartened by the decision.
However, Yannic Bastarache gave Grand Falls’ the win, scoring power play goal no. 20 for the Rapids on the season and avenging the tough loss suffered the night before in New Glasgow.
Final shots on goal were 32 to 29 in favour of the Rapids.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 4-3 DEVANT LES RAMBLERS
AMHERST – Le but en avantage numérique de Yannic Bastarache, marqué avec moins de 5 minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de soutirer une victoire de 4-3 vendredi soir sur la route face aux Ramblers d’Amherst.
Il s’agissait d’un 10e filet pour Bastarache cette saison, ainsi qu’un 6e but en supériorité numérique et un 3e but gagnant à son crédit. Son tir en provenance du cercle des mises en jeu a surpris le gardien des Ramblers, Jacob Leblanc, alors que Evan Bellamy et Dominic Leblanc se sont chacun mérité une mention d’aide sur le filet vainqueur.
Ben Diamond, Ian Dickie et Evan Bellamy ont complété le pointage pour Grand-Sault alors que Alexis Dubé faisait bouger les cordages à deux reprises pour Amherst.
Avec cette victoire, les Rapides devancent maintenant le Blizzard d’Edmundston pour l’obtention du 5e rang au classement de la division Eastlink Nord. La troupe de Greg Leland est à égalité avec Fredericton en 5e position avec 14 points, soit 1pt de moins que Miramichi et Campbellton qui partagent le deuxième rang.
C’était une 5e victoire acquise par les Rapides lors de leurs 6 dernières sorties. Leur dossier se situe présentement à .500 pour la saison, soit 7 victoires et 7 revers.
Le match a débuté en force du côté offensif alors que chaque équipe a réussi à noircir la feuille de pointage avant la 8e minute de jeu de l’engagement initial.
Ben Diamond a donné les devants aux Rapides à 5 :44 après avoir redirigé un tir derrière le gardien. C’était un 8e but pour Diamond cette saison.
Gavin Watt a nivelé la marque pour les locaux à 7 :33 après avoir pris possession d’une rondelle bondissante devant le filet, ne laissant aucune chance au gardien Frédéric Plourde.
Deux autres buts ont été enregistrés avant la fin de l’engagement. Ian Dickie a redonné les devants à Grand-Sault avec son premier filet de la campagne à 11 :41 grâce à un tir parfait du côté du bouclier.
Puis avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en période (18 :17), l’ancien des Castors de St-Quentin, Alexis Dubé, a démontré son grand talent de patineur et de maniement de la rondelle, déjouant le gardien lors d’une échappée partielle alors que sa formation évoluait en supériorité numérique.
C’était donc l’égalité 2-2 après vingt minutes de jeu avec les Rapides en avance 12-11 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Seulement 1 but a été marqué en deuxième période, survenu à 14 :44. Le tir des poignets en provenance de la pointe du défenseur Evan Bellamy a trouvé le fond du filet alors que le gardien adverse avait la vue voilée. Il s’agissait d’un but inscrit en avantage numérique, un 19e cette saison pour les Rapides.
Les Ramblers ont raté une belle occasion de prendre les devants tôt en période lorsque Alexis Dubé a été décerné un tir de pénalité. Frédéric Plourde a cependant effectué l’arrêt.
Après deux périodes de jeu, Grand-Sault était en avance 3-2 au pointage et dominait 25-18 pour les tirs au but.
Alexis Dubé allait tout de même se reprendre en troisième période, inscrivant le but égalisateur à 4 :22. Il s’agissait de son deuxième filet de la rencontre et son 4e de la campagne.
Les Rapides croyaient bien avoir pris les devants à la 11e minute de jeu de l’engagement lorsque le tir de Joachim Matulu semblait avoir trouvé le fond du filet. Les officiels ont toutefois refusé le but au grand désarroi des quelques partisans des Rapides qui avaient fait le voyage pour encourager leur équipe.
Yannic Bastarache est cependant venu mettre un terme au débat en marquant le but de la victoire à 15 :25 avec l’avantage d’un homme, un 20e but inscrit en supériorité numérique par les Rapides cette saison.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 32-29 en faveur des Rapides qui parvenaient ainsi à venger leur revers difficile encaissé la veille du côté de New Glasgow.
