RAPIDS FALL SHORT AGAINST SOUTH SHORE
GRAND FALLS – Andrew Antle’s goal, scored at 6:32 of the third period, broke a 2-2 tie as the South Shore Lumberjacks skated away to a 3-2 victory Friday night in Grand Falls against the Rapids.
Grand Falls took the lead twice in the contest, but each time, the Lumberjacks came back to even the score. South Shore added a 17th victory to its record while the Rapids, still 5th in the Eastlink North division standings, were defeated for a 14th time this season in regulation time. It was also their first of three consecutive games over the weekend.
The Rapids started the contest with very good intensity as their forechecking game was at its best, while also getting the best scoring chances early on.
It was Brad MacKenzie’s squad that notched the first goal of the game while with the man advantage at the 4-minute mark. After leaving his post at the blue line, defenseman Patrick Musico sent a shot in the top corner of the net to give his team the lead. It was a first goal for Musico after his return to the team last week. Dawson Wood and Nash Smith both picked up assists on the goal.
In the second half of the period, momentum shifted towards the visiting side as the Lumberjacks were able to force a few turnovers in Rapids’ territory. South Shore tied the score at 10:40, also on the power play, when Dylan Coffey scored on a rebound in front of the net after goaltender Nolan Boyd made the initial save.
Despite a few good scoring chances at both ends, only 17 shots in total were registered in the period: 9 by the Rapids and 8 for South Shore.
The Lumberjacks came into the middle frame by throwing the body, keeping their opponents with very little space to maneuver. The Rapids did however manage to regain the lead after scoring on an odd man rush when a South Shore player fell to the ice in Grand Falls territory. Dawson Wood connected with a perfect wrist shot in the top corner of the net for his 14th goal of the season. Miguel Paré and Adam Fowlow each obtained an assist on the Rapids’ second goal of the game.
But as they did previously, the Lumberjacks tied the score at the mid-point of the period on defenseman Ian Smallwood’s one-timer, bringing the score to 2-2.
Grand Falls shot 10 times on goal in the period compared to 8 for South Shore.
Both teams played a conservative game in the third period as they tried to avoid committing an error that would eventually decide the outcome of the contest. Only 13 shots were registered in the period, 7 for the Lumberjacks and 6 for Grand Falls.
The winning tally came on a two-on-one break into Rapids’ territory. After he came in alone in front of Nolan Boyd, Andrew Antle slid the puck under the netminder to give the visitors the lead for good.
Ian Smallwood (the game’s first star) had a good showing offensively for the Lumberjacks with a performance of 1 goal and 1 assist. His teammate Bair Gendunov, fourth leading scorer in the MHL, was the second star as he picked up 2 assists to his night’s work.
Dawson Wood led the Rapids offensively with 1 goal and 1 assist as he was named the game’s third star. Defenseman Matthew MacKay also had a strong game at the blueline as he was greatly responsible on the play leading to the Rapids’ second goal, while also being used up front while with the man advantage.
The Rapids will travel to Fredericton on Saturday to play the Red Wings before coming back home on Sunday afternoon as the Edmundston Blizzard come to town. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT DE JUSTESSE DEVANT SOUTH-SHORE
GRAND-SAULT – Le but de Andrew Antle, marqué à 6 :32 en troisième période, a permis aux Lumberjacks de South Shore de briser une égalité de 2-2, en route vers un gain de 3-2 vendredi soir à Grand-Sault aux dépens des Rapides.
Ces derniers avaient réussi à prendre les devants deux fois dans la rencontre, mais la formation de South Shore est revenue de l’arrière chaque fois pour finalement signer une 17e victoire à leur palmarès cette saison. Pour les Rapides, détenteurs du 5e rang au classement de la division Eastlink Nord, il s’agissait d’un 14e revers en temps réglementaire cette saison.
La troupe de l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie, qui entreprenait un premier match en trois jours, a bien entrepris la rencontre, appliquant un échec avant solide tout en obtenant les meilleures chances de marquer.
Ce sont d’ailleurs les Rapides qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage lors d’une supériorité numérique à 4 :30. De retour avec l’équipe depuis une semaine, le défenseur Patrick Musico a dirigé un tir frappé dans la partie supérieure du filet après avoir quitté son poste à la ligne bleue. Il s’agissait donc d’un premier but pour Musico cette saison alors que Dawson Wood et Nash Smith ont obtenu chacun une mention d’aide.
Les Lumberjacks ont ensuite profité de quelques revirements de la part des Rapides en deuxième moitié de période pour prendre un certain momentum dans la rencontre. Ils ont assuré la réplique à leur tour sur le jeu de puissance, égalisant la marque à 10 :40 alors que Dylan Coffey prenait un retour de lancer devant le filet du gardien Nolan Boyd.
Malgré quelques bonnes chances de marquer des deux côtés, seulement 17 tirs au but ont été dirigés vers le filet, soit 9 par les Rapides et 8 de la part de South Shore.
En deuxième période, les Lumberjacks avaient comme mission de s’imposer davantage sur le plan physique, laissant leurs adversaires avec très peu de marge de manœuvre en territoire adverse. Les Rapides ont toutefois été les plus opportunistes, prenant les devants à nouveau à 5 :59 alors qu’ils ont profité d’une chute d’un joueur des Lumberjacks pour se retrouver en situation de surnombre. C’est finalement Dawson Wood qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir parfait dans la partie supérieure du filet, inscrivant ainsi son 14e but de la campagne. Miguel Paré et Adam Fowlow se sont mérité une mention d’assistance sur le jeu.
Les Lumberjacks ont cependant répliqué à nouveau, soit à mi-chemin dans l’engagement, lorsque le défenseur Ian Smallwood y allait d’un tir sur réception à partir de l’enclave, remettant le tout à la case départ.
Grand-Sault a dirigé 10 lancers en direction du filet adverse au cours de cette période comparativement à 8 du côté de South Shore.
Les deux équipes ont joué un style plutôt conservateur en troisième, évitant ainsi de commettre une erreur qui pourrait éventuellement faire la différence dans le match. D’ailleurs, les deux équipes n’ont dirigé que 13 tirs au total dans l’engagement, dont 6 seulement du côté des Rapides.
Le filet victorieux de la part des Lumberjacks a été réussi sur une descente à deux contre un. Alors qu’il s’est retrouvé seul devant le gardien Nolan Boyd, Andrew Antle a réussi à glisser la rondelle sous le gardien des Rapides pour ainsi procurer les devants pour de bon aux visiteurs.
Ian Smallwood a connu un bon match en attaque du côté des Lumberjacks avec une prestation de 1 but et 1 aide, se méritant ainsi la première étoile de la rencontre. Son coéquipier Bair Gendunov, quatrième meilleur pointeur du circuit, a obtenu la deuxième étoile avec une récolte de 2 passes à sa fiche.
Dawson Wood a été le meilleur offensivement du côté des Rapides avec une performance de 1 but et 1 mention d’aide, lui permettant ainsi de se mériter la troisième étoile.
Le défenseur Matthew MacKay, qui a été à l’origine du deuxième but des Rapides, a lui aussi connu un bon match. Il a de plus été utilisé à l’avant en situation de supériorité numérique.
Les Rapides seront sur la route samedi pour disputer la victoire aux Red Wings à Fredericton avant de revenir à la maison pour affronter le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00 dimanche après-midi au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
