EDMUNDSTON – The Grand Falls Rapids played another tight and competitive game on Sunday afternoon in Edmundston, hanging on with the top team in the league until the very end.
It was Philippe Collette, in the shootout frame, that gave the Blizzard the 3-2 victory. However, the Rapids pick up a point in the standings and an 8th point in their last six games, all played in February.
After a scoreless first period, the Blizzard took a 2-0 lead with two goals in the first 7 minutes of play of the second period.
Will Allen’s shot from the slot beat netminder Adam Lecours on the blocker side, giving Edmundston a 1-0 advantage at 1:18. Then at 7:15, Alex Thibault scored on a rebound in front of the net while the Blizzard were playing with the man advantage.
The Rapids had some great scoring opportunities in the middle frame, especially on odd-man rushes. It was on a 3-on-1 break that Grand Falls got on the board when Nathan Plamondon-Michaud’s shot found the back of the net at 16:19.
The game was tied at the 14-minute mark of the third period while the Rapids were playing with a two-man advantage. Jonah Leard’s one-timer found the top corner for his 25th goal of the season.
No goals were scored in the overtime frame.
Only one player on both sides was able to score in the shootout as Philippe Collette gave the home team the win.
Adam Lecours was once again remarkable between the pipes for Grand Falls, blocking 45 shots.
Austin Caley was the winning goaltender, making a total of 24 saves.
Nathan Plamondon-Michaud of the Rapids was the only player to earn more than two points to his record with a 1g 1a performance.
The Rapids are scheduled to play on Monday afternoon on home ice against the Campbellton Tigers if weather permits.
