RAPIDS FALL 8-2 TO THE EDMUNDSTON BLIZZARD
GRAND FALLS – The Blizzard scored three times in the second period and added three more goals in the final frame, guiding them to an 8-2 victory Sunday afternoon in Grand Falls against the Rapids.
Brock McLeod had a strong game offensively for Edmundston with a 6-point performance, scoring once and assisting on 5 goals. Chrystopher Collin (2 goals and 1 assist), Tristan Gagnon (1 goal and 2 assists) and Paul Leroux (2 goals) also contributed to the 18th win by the Blizzard this season.
As for the Rapids, it was their 4th loss in a row and a third in three days. They were thus unable to deliver the perfect gift for their mascot Rapido who was celebrating on Sunday his first anniversary.
The Blizzard played a very strong game, dominating puck possession in Rapids’ territory while clearing their own front of the net on ensuing rebounds. It seemed that is was always an Edmundston defender who took control of the puck, leading the way to a rush at the other end.
Paul Leroux gave the visitors the lead at 11:18 of the opening period after a turnover in the neutral zone. Leroux took his own rebound, notching his first of the game. That goal came just a few seconds after Matthew MacNeil missed a great opportunity to put the Rapids in front as he missed an open net shot.
The Rapids did however tie the score at the end of the period. At 18:26, Adam Fowlow took control of a loose puck and sent his shot in the top corner of the net for his 3rd goal of the campaign.
It looked like Grand Falls would retreat to the dressing room all knotted at 1-1, but the Blizzard had other plans. They regained the lead with only 15 seconds remaining. Tristan Gagnon came into the slot and fired a shot that went through traffic in front of the net.
Edmundston, who was ahead 2-1, dominated 11 to 8 in shots on goal in the period.
The Rapids had their chances to tie the score in the early stages of the second period, but it was the Blizzard who struck first while on the power play. Chrystopher Collin took control of a loose puck in the slot and fired it in the back of the net at 4:32. Collin added his second goal of the game at 10:52 to make it 4-1 at that point. Edmundston added its 5th goal at 15:28 on another tally coming from the slot as Marc-André Couture netted his 2nd of the season. After that goal, Tyriq Outen replaced Nolan Boyd in the Grand Falls net.
It was a good start to the third period for the Rapids who showed lots of energy and hard work in the opponents’ end. However, Blizzard goaltender Antoine Lyonnais came up with some key saves early on.
Then at 5:58 on a breakaway, Drew Toner finally beat Lyonnais with a backhand shot in the top corner, cutting the lead to three goals.
Edmundston would however answer back with three unanswered goals, including two in a span of only 13 seconds. Brock McLeod, Paul Leroux and Isaac Chapman (his 19th of the season) were the goal scorers for the Blizzard in the third period.
Edmundston dominated the game in shots on goal, 28 to 27.
Adam Fowlow led the way offensively for the Rapids with a 1-goal and 1-assist performance. Take note also that defenseman Danny Griffith was back in the lineup for Grand Falls on Sunday after suffering an injury.
The Rapids will play their next game at home on Friday night as they host the Miramichi Timberwolves starting at 7:30 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. It will be their last game on home ice before the holiday break.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 8-2 DEVANT LE BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Le Blizzard a marqué trois fois en deuxième période et a ajouté trois autres buts lors du troisième engagement, leur permettant ainsi de filer vers une victoire de 8-2 dimanche après-midi à Grand-Sault aux dépens des Rapides.
Brock McLeod a connu tout un match en attaque pour la formation d’Edmundston alors qu’il a récolté 6 points à sa fiche avec une performance de 1 but et 5 mentions d’aide. Chrystopher Collin (2 buts 1 passe), Tristan Gagnon (1 but 2 passes) et Paul Leroux (2 buts) ont également contribué à cette victoire, la 18e de la saison pour le Blizzard.
Quant aux Rapides, ces derniers subissaient un 4e revers consécutif et un troisième en trois jours. Ils n’ont malheureusement pas été en mesure de livrer un cadeau de circonstance à leur mascotte Rapido qui célébrait dimanche son premier anniversaire.
Le Blizzard a disputé un excellent match dans l’ensemble, dominant le temps de possession de la rondelle en territoire adverse, tout en venant en appui à leur gardien Antoine Lyonnais. Au moindre retour de lancer devant le filet, c’est pratiquement toujours un joueur d’Edmundston qui saisissait la rondelle libre pour ensuite relancer l’attaque.
Paul Leroux a procuré les devants aux visiteurs à 11 :18 en première période suite à un revirement en zone neutre. Ce dernier a pris son propre retour de lancer devant le filet pour ainsi enregistrer son premier but du match. Quelques instants auparavant, Matthew MacNeil avait raté une belle occasion d’ouvrir le pointage pour les Rapides, mais ce dernier a raté son tir avec une cage béante devant lui.
Les Rapides ont toutefois créé l’égalité en fin de période, soit à 18 :26, lorsque Adam Fowlow a pris possession d’une rondelle libre pour ensuite la rediriger dans la partie supérieure du filet pour son 3e but de la campagne.
La formation de Grand-Sault croyait bien retraiter au vestiaire avec une égalité de 1-1, mais le Blizzard a assuré la réplique avec seulement 15 secondes à écouler en période. Alors qu’il s’est amené dans l’enclave, Tristan Gagnon a profité de beaucoup de circulation devant le filet de Nolan Boyd pour redonner les devants aux siens.
C’est la formation d’Edmundston qui a eu le dessus au chapitre des tirs au but lors de cette première période, soit 11-8.
Les Rapides ont obtenu quelques bonnes chances de marquer en début de deuxième période, mais c’est le Blizzard qui réussi à ajouter un 3e but à 4 :32 lorsque Chrystopher Collin a pris possession d’une rondelle libre dans l’enclave pour ensuite diriger un tir vif dans la partie supérieure du filet. Ce but fut enregistré en supériorité numérique, permettant ainsi aux visiteurs de prendre une avance de 3-1.
Collin allait ensuite marquer pour une deuxième fois à 10 :52 lors d’une descente à deux contre un en territoire des Rapides. Ces derniers ont marqué pour une 5e fois à 15 :28 sur un tir dirigé à partir de l’enclave de la part de Marc-Antoine Couture. Tyriq Outen a ensuite pris la relève de Nolan Boyd devant la cage des Rapides.
Le Blizzard menait donc 5-1 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides ont entrepris la troisième période avec beaucoup d’énergie et d’ardeur au jeu. Le gardien du Blizzard, Antoine Lyonnais, a dû se surpasser à quelques reprises devant quelques attaques répétées de la part des Rapides.
Puis lors d’une échappée au filet, Drew Toner parvenait finalement à déjouer Lyonnais d’un tir du revers dans la partie supérieure pour réduire l’écart à trois buts.
Le Blizzard a toutefois répliqué avec trois buts, dont ceux de Brock McLeod et Paul Leroux dans un intervalle de seulement 13 secondes, et ce, avec moins de 7 minutes à écouler au match. Isaac Chapman est celui qui avait inscrit le premier but d’Edmundston dans l’engagement, soit son 19e de la saison lors d’une supériorité numérique à 8 :57.
Edmundston a dominé 28-27 au chapitre des tirs au but dans cette rencontre qui fut disputée devant une foule de plus de 1000 spectateurs au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Adam Fowlow a été le meilleur offensivement pour la formation de Grand-Sault avec une récolte de 1 but et 1 passe. Mentionnons également que le défenseur Danny Griffith était de retour au jeu après avoir été mis à l’écart en raison d’une blessure.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochain match vendredi soir prochain à domicile alors qu’ils accueilleront les Timberwolves de Miramichi à compter de 19h30. Il s’agira ainsi de la dernière partie locale avant la pause du temps des fêtes.
