RAPIDS FALL 5-2 TO SUMMERSIDE
GRAND FALLS – Will Proud broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period as the Summerside Western Capitals skated away with a 5-2 victory Friday night against the Grand Falls Rapids.
Trentyn Crane scored twice for the defending MHL champions while Landon Clow and Sid McNeill completed the scoring. Marc-Antoine Belzile and Patrice Leblanc were credited with the Rapids’ goals.
It was a game marred by over 100 minutes in penalties as things became more physical starting early in the middle frame until late in the contest.
Summerside, who outshot the Rapids 38 to 29, played a good defensive game while being the most opportunistic team offensively, scoring twice on the power play.
The Rapids were able to tie the score at the 15-minute mark of the second period, but Proud’s first tally of the season came at 17:33 to give the visitors the lead for good.
Only one goal was scored in the opening frame. After a shot from the point deflected off a Rapids’ defender, Landon Clow was able to put in the rebound to give Summerside an early lead at 3:09.
Shots on goal through twenty minutes of play were 11-10 in favour of the Rapids.
As many players were sent off one after the other to the penalty box for the entirety of the second period, both teams still managed to score a total of four goals.
The Rapids tied the score at 8:30 on Marc-Antoine Belzile’s first of the season after he took a rebound in front of the net. Yannic Bastarache was credited with an assist.
Summerside regained the lead at 15:33 while playing with the man advantage. Trentyn Crane swiftly got by a defender, beating Rapids’ netminder Frederic Plourde with a backhand shot.
Less than two minutes later however, the Rapids also took advantage of a power play to tie the score 2-2. The initial shot from the point deflected off the skate of a Summerside defenseman, leaving the puck on the stick of Patrice Leblanc. Evan Bellamy and Yannic Bastarache both assisted on the Rapids’ second tally of the night.
Exactly two minutes later came Will Proud’s game winner, a wrist shot that found its way into the back of the net.
The Western Capitals added two more goals in the third period. Trentyn Crane scored his second of the night and his 4th of the season at 9:01 on the power play.
Then at 14:21, Sid McNeill made it 5-2 with Crane earning an assist on the goal.
Despite the loss, Frederic Plourde was solid in net for Grand Falls, facing a total of 38 shots while keeping his team in the game for as long as he could.
At the other end, Brandon Abbott blocked 27 of 29 shots sent by the Rapids.
With the victory, Summerside earned its 3rd win of the season in as many games played while Grand Falls fell to 1 win and 2 defeats to start the season.
The Rapids will return to action on Sunday afternoon, once again on home ice, as they host the Edmundston Blizzard. Puck drop is at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 5-2 DEVANT SUMMERSIDE
GRAND-SAULT – Will Proud a brisé une égalité de 2-2 tard en deuxième période, permettant aux Western Capitals de Summerside de l’emporter au compte de 5-2 vendredi soir aux dépens des Rapides de Grand-Sault.
Trentyn Crane a marqué deux fois pour les champions en titre de la LHM alors que Landon Clow et Sid McNeill complétaient le pointage. Marc-Antoine Belzile et Patrice Leblanc ont été crédités des deux buts des Rapides.
Il s’agissait d’un match robuste alors que plus de 100 minutes en pénalités ont été décernées, notamment à partir du début du second engagement, et ce, jusqu’à la fin de la rencontre.
Les Western Capitals, qui ont dominé 38-29 au chapitre des tirs au but, ont disputé un match très solide sur le plan défensif, tout en étant très opportuniste offensivement en y allant de deux buts avec l’avantage numérique.
Les Rapides ont été en mesure de créer l’égalité à la 15e minute de jeu en deuxième période, mais le premier filet de la campagne de Will Proud, survenu à 17 :33, a permis aux visiteurs de prendre les devants pour de bon.
Un seul but fut enregistré lors de la période initiale. Après qu’un tir provenant de la pointe eut dévié sur un défenseur des Rapides, Landon Clow a pris contrôle du retour de lancer pour donner l’avance 1-0 à Summerside à 3 :09.
Grand-Sault a légèrement dominé au chapitre des lancers au terme du premier engagement, soit 11-10.
Alors que plusieurs joueurs défilaient au banc des pénalités en deuxième période, les deux équipes ont tout de même été capables de produire 4 buts au total.
Les Rapides ont réussi à niveler la marque à 8 :30 lorsque Marc-Antoine Belzile à récupérer un retour de lancer devant le filet, inscrivant son premier but de la campagne. Yannic Bastarache s’est mérité une mention d’aide sur le premier but des locaux.
Summerside a repris les devants à 15 :33 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Après avoir habilement déjoué un défenseur des Rapides, Trentyn Crane a battu le gardien Frédéric Plourde à l’aide d’un tir du revers.
Toutefois, moins de deux minutes plus tard, les Rapides ont également capitalisé sur le jeu de puissance, égalisant le pointage 2-2. Le tir initial provenant de la pointe a d’abord dévié sur le patin d’un défenseur de Summerside, laissant ainsi la rondelle sur le bâton de Patrice Leblanc. Evan Bellamy et Yannic Bastarache ont chacun obtenu des mentions d’assistance sur le but.
Puis exactement deux minutes plus tard, Will Proud enregistrait le but de la victoire à l’aide d’un tir des poignets.
Les Western Capitals ont ajouté deux autres buts en troisième période.
Trentyn Crane a inscrit son deuxième de la soirée et son 4e de la saison à 9 :01 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Sid McNeill est celui qui enregistrait le 5e filet des vainqueurs à 14 :21 alors que Crane se méritait une mention d’aide.
Malgré le revers, le gardien Frédéric Plourde a été solide devant la cage des Rapides, faisant face à 38 lancers au total tout en gardant son équipe dans le match lorsque l’adversaire se montrait plus menaçant.
Son vis-à-vis Brandon Abbott a pour sa part bloqué 27 des 29 tirs à lui faire face, enregistrant la victoire.
Avec ce gain, les Western Capitals se méritent une 3e victoire en autant de matchs de disputés cette saison alors que la fiche des Rapides est présentement de 1 victoire et 2 revers.
Le prochain match des Rapides sera disputé dimanche après-midi alors qu’ils accueilleront le Blizzard d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
