RAPIDS EARN A SECOND CONSECUTIVE VICTORY AGAINST MIRAMICHI
GRAND FALLS – Cole MacWilliam scored with only 1:01 left to play in the third period, giving the Grand Falls Rapids a 6-5 victory Sunday afternoon on home ice against the Miramichi Timberwolves.
It was the last preseason contest played by both teams as they split the four-game series with two wins apiece.
MacWilliam’s one-timer beat Timberwolves’ goaltender Jacob French at 18:59 as the Rapids had to come from behind once again in the final frame. Trailing 5-4 at the 6-minute mark of the third period, Grand Falls tied the score on Bryce Thomson’s shorthanded goal which came at 8:46.
Mathis Huot scored twice for the Rapids, giving him 4 goals in two preseason games. Marc-Antoine Belzile and Patrice Leblanc completed the scoring for Grand Falls.
Newcomers made their presence felt, not only on the score sheet, but also with their intensity and energy. It was also the last opportunity for some of the Rapids’ players to prove to the coaching staff that they belong in the lineup come opening night.
The Rapids took a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes of play on goals from Marc-Antoine Belzile on the power play and Mathis Huot.
Liam Trenholm had tied the score at 1-1 for Miramichi mid-way in the period.
Patrice Leblanc gave the Rapids a 3-1 lead at 3:50 of the second period on a one-timer. However, the Timberwolves answered back with three consecutive goals, twice with the man advantage. Jacob Santerre and Daryk Dubé-Plouffe scored on the power play while Adam Pinsken completed the scoring for Miramichi who skated away with a 4-3 lead after two periods of play.
Shots on goal at that point were 24-14 in favour of the Rapids.
Mathis Huot added his second goal of the game at 2:40 of the third period while the Rapids were playing with the man advantage. Huot found a loose puck in front of the Timberwolves’ net as Yannic Bastarache and Dominic Leblanc contributed, earning each an assist on the tying goal.
Miramichi regained the lead at 6:00 on Ludovic Dufort’s second tally of the exhibition schedule.
The visitors held a 5-4 lead and were on the power play when the Rapids broke away on an odd man rush. Bryce Thomson took a quick wrist shot that found the back of the net, an unassisted goal scored which came at 8:46. Thomson would finish the game with 1 goal and 1 assist.
Then at 18:59, Cole MacWilliam scored the game winner for the Rapids on a pass from defenseman James Rogers.
Yannic Bastarache also contributed to the scoring for the Rapids with 2 assists.
Three Timberwolves’ players had identical record of 2g and 1a: Daryk Dubé-Plouffe, Ludovic Dufort and Liam Trenholm.
The final tally in shots on goal was 36-25 in favour of Grand Falls.
Nathan Michaud, a product of the Thomas-Albert high school team, started the game in net for the Rapids and was replaced at the mid-way point of the contest by Isaac Sparrow.
Alexandre Michaud and Maxime Madore, two other products of the Elites, were also on hand for the game. Dominic Deschênes of St.Joseph near Edmundston was also in the lineup for Sunday afternoon’s contest.
The Rapids will play their fist game of the 2022-2023 regular season schedule on Friday night as they host the Fredericton Red Wings at 7:30 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT ENCORE FACE À MIRAMICHI
GRAND-SAULT – Cole MacWilliam a marqué avec 1 :01 à écouler en troisième période, procurant aux Rapides de Grand-Sault une victoire de 6-5 dimanche après-midi à domicile face aux Timberwolves de Miramichi.
Il s’agissait du dernier match préparatoire disputé entre ces deux formations. Chaque équipe s’est mérité la victoire à deux reprises en quatre sorties.
Le tir sur réception de MacWilliam a battu le gardien Jacob French à 18 :59 alors que pour un deuxième affrontement consécutif, les Rapides sont parvenus à revenir de l’arrière en troisième période.
Tirant de l’arrière 5-4 à la 6e minute de jeu de l’engagement, Grand-Sault a nivelé la marque grâce au filet de Bryce Thomson inscrit en désavantage numérique à 8 :46.
Mathis Huot a marqué deux fois pour les vainqueurs, ses 3e et 4e buts en deux rencontres. Marc-Antoine Belzile et Patrice Leblanc ont complété le pointage.
Les nouveaux venus ont fait sentir leur présence de brillante façon, non seulement sur la feuille de pointage, mais aussi par leur intensité et leur énergie déployée sur la patinoire. Il s’agissait également de la dernière opportunité pour certains joueurs d’impressionner suffisamment le personnel d’entraîneurs dans le but d’obtenir un poste avec l’équipe sur une base régulière.
Les Rapides ont pris une avance de 2-1 après vingt minutes de jeu. Marc-Antoine Belzile, lors d’une supériorité numérique, et Mathis Huot ont fait bouger les cordages du côté des locaux.
Liam Trenholm avait créé l’égalité pour Miramichi mi-chemin en période.
Patrice Leblanc a permis aux Rapides de prendre les devants 3-1 à 3 :50 en deuxième période à l’aide d’un tir sur réception. Les Timberwolves ont toutefois assuré la réplique en y allant de trois buts sans riposte, dont deux enregistrés sur le jeu de puissance. Jacob Santerre et Daryk Dubé-Plouffe ont marqué avec l’avantage d’un homme alors que Adam Pinsken complétait la marque, permettant aux Timberwolves de retraiter au vestiaire après deux périodes avec une avance de 4-3.
Mathis Huot a ajouté son deuxième filet de la rencontre pour les Rapides à 2 :40 en troisième période, un but inscrit en avantage numérique. Huot était parvenu à trouver une rondelle libre devant le filet des Timberwolves. Yannic Bastarache et Dominic Leblanc se sont chacun mérités des mentions d’aide sur le but égalisateur.
Miramichi a repris les devants à 6 :00 sur le but de Ludovic Dufort, son deuxième en matchs préparatoires.
Les visiteurs s’accrochaient à une priorité de 5-4 et tentaient de profiter d’une supériorité numérique pour accroître leur avance. Les Rapides ont cependant réussi à s’échapper en surnombre et c’est Bryce Thompson qui a nivelé le pointage à nouveau, un but sans aide survenu à 8 :46. Thompson allait terminer la rencontre avec 1 but et 1 mention d’aide.
Puis à 18 :59, Cole MacWilliam inscrivait le but gagnant sur une passe du défenseur James Rogers.
Yannic Bastarache a lui aussi contribué au pointage avec 2 mentions d’aide.
Trois joueurs du côté des Timberwolves ont terminé le match avec des récoltes identiques de 2b et 1p, soit Daryk Dubé-Plouffe, Ludovic Dufort et Liam Trenholm.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 36-25 en faveur de Grand-Sault.
Nathan Michaud, un produit des Élites de la Polyvalente Thomas-Albert au niveau interscolaire, était d’office devant le filet pour débuter la rencontre. Isaac Sparrow est venu prendre la relève mi-chemin dans la partie.
À noter que Alexandre Michaud et Maxime Madore, deux autres produits des Élites, étaient aussi de l’alignement, tout comme Dominic Deschênes, originaire de of St.Joseph.
Les Rapides disputeront leur première partie de la saison régulière 2022-2023 vendredi soir alors qu’ils croiseront le fer avec les Red Wings de Fredericton. Le tout débutera à 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
