RAPIDS EARN A 5-3 VICTORY AGAINST THE BLIZZARD
GRAND FALLS – The Rapids scored twice with the man advantage and added two shorthanded goals in a 5-3 victory on Friday night against the Edmundston Blizzard in an exhibition contest played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Hometown boy Drew Toner led the way offensively for the Rapids with a 2-goal performance while adding an assist to his night’s work.
A total of 632 spectators were on hand for the first of back-to-back pre-season games between these two teams.
It was a second win for Grand Falls in five games since the beginning of training camp. Despite their frequent visits to the penalty box in the third period, the Rapids played a strong and intense game as they took advantage of their special teams and their physical advantage to dominate their opponents.
Head coach Brad Mackenzie was very satisfied with his team’s performance on Friday night.
“We got off to a great start in the first period with energy and structure in our game. We got away from our game in the second period as Edmundston was the hungrier team. But I was proud of our guys sticking with it and finding a way to get it done despite facing some adversity”.
The first 10 minutes of the opening frame were dominated by the Rapids as they were able to clog centre ice, leaving very little space for their opponents to manoeuver. The Blizzard had to play deep into their own end, but did a good job preventing shots from up close.
Edmundston had the first man advantage opportunity of the game and came alive offensively from that point, but Rapids’ netminder Gio DiMattia stood his ground.
With 3:30 left in the period, it was the Rapids’ turn to go on a power play and they cashed in at the 16:50 mark when Jérémie Gagnon scored on a rebound following a shot from the point by defenseman Zac Arsenault. It was Gagnon’s third tally of the preseason.
Shots on goal were 9-4 in favour of the Rapids after twenty minutes of play.
The Blizzard played a much better second period, pressing the play and getting quick on the puck, provoking turnovers. They were also winning the majority of their faceoffs, which resulted in an early goal when Ethan Johnson scored on a cross-ice pass from Félix Rioux, tying the score 1-1 at the 1-minute mark of the period.
The Rapids got into penalty trouble late in the frame as they had to defend a 5 on 3 Blizzard advantage, and not only were they able to avoid the worst, but they also scored the go-ahead goal. Fresh out of the penalty box, Adam Fowlow came up speeding down the right side of the boards, coming in alone on goaltender Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert which be beat on the blocker side at 18:18. It was Fowlow’s first of the exhibition season which also happened to be a shorthanded goal.
Edmundston dominated the middle frame in shots on goal, 14-8.
The Rapids got on the board early in the third period, at only 39 seconds of play, on a tip in front of the net from Drew Toner. Defenseman Zachary Cormier pinched in, sending a great pass in front to Toner who notched his first of the pre-season schedule.
Isaac Dixon brought the score to 4-1 at the 13-minute mark after his shot from the point was tipped in front of the net. It was another power play tally, the Rapids’ second of the game.
Penalties came in bunches during the final minutes of the contest as Grand Falls had to defend a 5 on 3 disadvantage on two more occasions. The Blizzard finally got their first power play goal of the game at 16:55 on Samuel Grégoire’s tally, which cut the Rapids’ lead in half.
Brad Mackenzie saw the game at that point take a very different direction.
“The third period was a strange one with no flow and a lot of penalties”.
After Edmundston pulled its goalie with less than three minutes remaining, Drew Toner stole the puck from a Blizzard defender and scored into an empty net for his second of the night to make it 5-2. It was also a shorthanded goal, the second of the game for Grand Falls.
Finally, at 18:44 with the man advantage, Dylan Lang sent a hard slap shot in the back of the net for the Blizzard’s third goal and their second power play tally of the contest.
Final shots on goal were 35 to 26 in favour of the Blizzard. Goaltender Gio DiMattia had a strong game between the pipes for the Rapids, making key saves during those numerous occasions where the Rapids had to play shorthanded.
Note that both teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon in Edmundston. Puck drop is at 3pm at the Jean-Daigle Centre.

*The first star of the game was awarded to Drew Toner who finished the game with 2 goals and 1 assist. Kyle Foreman and goaltender Gio DiMattia, both from the Rapids, were respectively selected the game’s second and third stars.
*There were five 16-year-old players in uniform for Edmundston on Friday night. It was the Blizzard’s first exhibition game of the pre-season schedule.
*The game registered a total of 96 minutes in penalties, including 60 minutes in the third period.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 5-3 FACE AU BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Les Rapides ont inscrit deux buts en avantage numérique et en ont ajouté deux autres lors d’une infériorité numérique, les conduisant ainsi vers un gain de 5-3 vendredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal face au Blizzard d’Edmundston.
Drew Toner a dirigé l’offensive des vainqueurs avec deux buts en plus d’ajouter une mention d’aide à sa soirée de travail.
Ce sont 632 spectateurs qui assistaient à ce premier duel du week-end opposant ces deux formations.
Il s’agissait donc d’une deuxième victoire en cinq parties pour les Rapides en parties hors concours. Mis à part les nombreuses pénalités qui leur furent décernées lors du troisième engagement, les protégés de l’entraîneur Brad Mackenzie ont démontré beaucoup d’intensité et d’ardeur au jeu, profitant de leurs unités spéciales et de leur avantage sur le plan physique pour dominer leurs opposants.
Mackenzie était d’ailleurs très satisfait du rendement de sa troupe au terme de la rencontre.
« Nous avons bien débuté la partie alors que nous avons mis beaucoup d’énergie et de structure dans notre jeu. Nous avons laissé de côté notre plan de match en deuxième, mais je suis fier tout de même de la façon que les gars ont pu revenir en force et répondre de belle façon à l’adversité qu’ils ont dû affronter ».
Les premières 10 minutes de jeu de la rencontre ont été dominées par les Rapides alors qu’ils ont été en mesure de bloquer le centre de la patinoire à leurs adversaires, leur laissant très peu de chance de manœuvre. Le Blizzard a dû évoluer à maintes reprises dans le fond de son territoire, mais leur brigade défensive a tout de même réussi à tenir le coup, empêchant toute chance de marquer près du filet.
Edmundston a été la première formation à se retrouver sur le jeu de puissance, leur permettant ainsi de connaître de meilleurs moments sur le plan offensif. Le gardien Gio DiMattia des Rapides a toutefois été solide, frustrant le Blizzard au moins en deux occasions.
Avec 3:30 à écouler dans l’engagement, ce fut au tour des Rapides à se retrouver avec l’avantage d’un homme et ils en ont profité pour prendre les devants lorsque Jérémie Gagnon a marqué sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Il s’agissait d’un troisième but pour Gagnon en matchs préparatoires.
Les tirs au but ont favorisé les Rapides lors du premier engagement, soit 9 contre 4.
Le Blizzard a disputé une meilleure deuxième période dans l’ensemble, pressant le jeu davantage et s’amenant rapidement sur la rondelle, provoquant du même coup quelques erreurs du côté de la défensive des Rapides. La formation d’Edmundston a aussi été très efficace sur les mises en jeu, ce qui leur a d’ailleurs permis de marquer très tôt dans l’engagement. Ethan Johnson est celui qui créait l’égalité à 1 :00, soulevant la rondelle au-dessus du gardien DiMattia après avoir accepté une belle passe transversale de la part de Félix Rioux.
Les Rapides ont dû se défendre à court de deux hommes tard en période, et non seulement ont-ils réussi à éviter le pire, mais ils ont également été en mesure de trouver le fond du filet pour reprendre les devants. Sortant tout juste du banc des pénalités, Adam Fowlow s’est amené à toute vitesse le long de la rampe pour finalement s’amener seul devant le gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert, le déjouant d’un tir du côté du bloqueur à 18 :18. Le but de Fowlow était donc enregistré en désavantage numérique.
À noter que le Blizzard a dominé 14-8 au chapitre des tirs au but en deuxième période.
La troupe de l’entraîneur Brad Mackenzie s’est signalée très tôt lors du troisième engagement, s’inscrivant au pointage après 39 secondes de jeu seulement sur une déviation devant le filet de la part de Drew Toner. Le défenseur Zachary Cormier avait quitté son poste pour s’amener en territoire adverse, servant ainsi une belle passe devant le filet à Toner qui enregistrait son premier but en matchs préparatoires.
Isaac Dixon a augmenté l’avance des locaux à 4-1 à la 13e minute de jeu de l’engagement lorsque son tir de la pointe a dévié devant le filet. Les Rapides inscrivaient du même coup un deuxième but en supériorité numérique dans la rencontre.
Les pénalités ont été nombreuses lors des dernières minutes de jeu de la partie alors que les Rapides ont dû encore une fois se défendre avec une infériorité de deux hommes, et ce, en deux autres occasions. Le Blizzard s’est finalement inscrit à la marque sur le jeu de puissance à 16 :55 sur le but de Samuel Grégoire, leur permettant ainsi de réduire l’écart de moitié.
Selon Brad Mackenzie, le tempo du match a pris une allure très différente en troisième.
« Ces nombreuses pénalités ont contribué à briser le momentum. Ce fut une troisième période très étrange ».
Après que le Blizzard eut retiré leur gardien en faveur d’un sixième attaquant, Drew Toner est habilement venu subtiliser la rondelle d’un opposant, dirigeant celle-ci dans une cage déserte pour son deuxième but de la rencontre, portant le compte à 5-2.
Puis finalement, à 18 :44, la formation d’Edmundston a enregistré un troisième but et un deuxième en avantage numérique sur le tir frappé de Dylan Lang.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 35 à 26 en faveur du Blizzard. Le gardien Gio DiMattia a connu tout un match devant la cage des Rapides, effectuant plusieurs arrêts clés, notamment lors des nombreuses occasions où son équipe à dû se défendre en infériorité numérique.
À noter que ces deux mêmes formations en viendront à nouveau aux prises dimanche après-midi, cette fois au Centre Jean-Daigle d’Edmundston à compter de 15h00.
