GRAND FALLS – The Rapids won their 5th game of the month of February on Wednesday night, hanging on to a 6-5 victory over the Campbellton Tigers at the E.&P. SénéchalCentre.
The Rapids held a 3-0 lead through twenty minutes of play and 5-2 after two periods before the Tigers scored three in the third to cut the lead to one goal. Greg Leland’s squad held on to earn their 15th win of the season.
Brody Paré opened the scoring for Grand Falls at 58 seconds of play of the opening period on a backhand shot from the slot. Derek Bird and Médéric Allard followed with goals at 5:07 and 11:53 respectively to give their team a 3-0 edge.
Nathan Plamondon-Michaud sent a wrist shot from the face off circle into the back of the net at 8:19 of the second period to bring the score to 4-0. Then at the 10-minute mark of the period, Isaac Allard’s shot from the point beat Tigers’ netminder Nathan Mills, giving the Rapids a 5-0 lead. Note that both Rapids’ goals in the period were scored on the power play.
Campbellton came back with two goals before the end of the middle frame. Tyler Pazin and Jean-Alexandre Tétreault were the goal scorers.
Owen Underhill reduced the margin to 5-3 for the Tigers at 3:12 of the third period, but Derek Bird scored his second of the night at 4:50 to give the Rapids a 6-3 lead.
Underhill would add his second goal for Campbellton at 15:55 and Mathis Guevin scored at 17:07 to bring the final score to 6-5.
Jonah Leard had the most productive night offensively for the Rapids with 4 assists.
Adam Lecours was the winning goaltender, picking up his 12th win of the season.
Campbellton held a slight edge in the shots on goal department, 37 to 36.
The Rapids also earned two more points to the standings on Wednesday when it was announced that the Miramichi Timberwolves had forfeited their first seven games of the season due to an ineligible player in their lineup, including the September 13th matchup against Grand Falls.
The Rapids return to action on Sunday afternoon as they host the West Kent Steamers at 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. It will be their last home game of the 2024-2025 season.
