RAPIDS DROP THEIR HOME OPENER
GRAND FALLS – The Fredericton Red Wings were determined to spoil the Rapids’ home opener on Friday night as they handed their opponents a 5-2 loss in front of 735 spectators gathered at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Viacheslav Melikov scored a pair of goals for the Red Wings while adding two assists. Cam Thompson also had a 4-point night with a strong performance of 1 goal and 3 assists.
Yannic Bastarache and Dominic Leblanc each scored for the Rapids who were outshot in the contest 33 to 22.
The Red Wings played a strong forechecking game and dominated puck control for the first two periods of play. They made it difficult for the Rapids to gain any momentum offensively as they were often kept deep in their own zone. Grand Falls did have their chances in the final frame, but the deficit was too much to handle.
Fredericton scored three times with the man advantage, including the first two goals of the game in the opening period. Nathan Kelly opened the scoring at 7:03 on a rebound in front of the net while Viacheslav Melikov added a second PP goal for the visitors on a one-timer at 11:48.
The Rapids did respond at 13:22 after applying some pressure in the Red Wings’ zone. Wearing the ‘C’ on his jersey for the occasion, Yannic Bastarache scored on a back hand shot as he was standing close to the net. James Rogers and Mathis Huot assisted on the Rapids’ first tally of the night.
Fredericton dominated the first period 16 to 5 in shots on goal.
The Red Wings kept their momentum going in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Cam Thompson beat netminder Frederic Plourde on a rebound at 4:52. Plourde came into the game in the second, replacing Joshua Fleming who played for the first twenty minutes of the game.
At 16:14, Melikov scored his second of the night on the power play to bring the score to 4-1. Then with less than two minutes remaining in the frame, Sasha Charbonneau added the Red Wings’ fifth goal.
After forty minutes of play, Fredericton led 5-1 and were outshooting their opponents 27 to 15.
Only one goal was scored in the third period as the Rapids were able to dominate puck possession while getting good opportunities to score from up close. Their second goal of the game came on a two-man advantage at 7:53 when Dominic Leblanc’s one-timer from the faceoff circle found the back of the net. Ben Diamond assisted on the goal.
Mathias Savoie, who made some spectacular saves in the final frame, picked up the win between the pipes for Fredericton.
The Red Wings finished the game 3 for 5 on the power play while Grand Falls went 1 for 4.
Viacheslav Melikov picked up first star honours with a performance of 2 goals and 2 assists. Cam Thompson (1g 3a) was the second star while Nathan Kelly (1g 2a) was named the third star of the contest.
The Rapids will play their next game on Sunday afternoon as they clash with their Northwestern rivals, the Edmundston Blizzard, for a 3pm contest at the Jean-Daigle Centre.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT FACE AUX RED WINGS
GRAND-SAULT – Les Red Wings de Fredericton étaient déterminés à gâcher le match d’ouverture local des Rapides, prenant la mesure de leurs opposants au compte de 5-2 vendredi soir. Un total de 735 spectateurs étaient au rendez-vous pour cette rencontre disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal de Grand-Sault.
Viacheslav Melikov a marqué deux fois pour les vainqueurs en plus d’ajouter deux mentions d’aide à sa soirée de travail. Cam Thompson a lui aussi terminé la rencontre avec 4 points à sa fiche avec une récolte de 1 but et 3 aides.
Yannic Bastarache et Dominic Leblanc ont enfilé les buts des Rapides qui ont été dominés 33 à 22 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Les Red Wings ont appliqué un échec avant impeccable lors des quarante premières minutes de la partie, tout en dominant le temps de possession de la rondelle. Ces derniers ont réussi à refouler les Rapides dans le fond de leur territoire pendant de longues séquences de jeu, faisant en sorte qu’il fut difficile pour les locaux de gagner un certain momentum sur le plan offensif. Les Rapides ont cependant obtenu de bonnes chances de marquer en troisième période, mais le déficit était déjà trop important.
Fredericton a marqué trois fois avec l’avantage d’un homme, incluant les deux premiers filets de la rencontre en première période. Nathan Kelly a ouvert le pointage à 7 :03 à l’aide d’un retour devant le filet. Puis à 11 :48, Viacheslav Melikov a ajouté un deuxième but en avantage numérique pour les visiteurs avec un tir sur réception.
Les Rapides ont assuré la réplique à 13 :22 après avoir réussi à appliquer de la pression en territoire adverse. Portant le ‘C’ sur son chandail pour l’occasion, Yannic Bastarache a marqué à l’aide d’un tir du revers alors qu’il était bien positionné à l’embouchure du filet. James Rogers et Mathis Huot ont chacun obtenu une mention d’aide sur le premier but des Rapides.
Fredericton a dominé la première période pour les tirs au but, 16-5.
Les Red Wings ont maintenu leur momentum lors du second engagement, inscrivant trois buts sans réplique. Cam Thompson a trompé la vigilance du gardien Frédéric Plourde à 4 :52. À noter que Plourde a fait son entrée devant le filet en début de deuxième période, venant en relève à Joshua Fleming qui était d’office pour les vingt premières minutes de jeu.
À 16 :14, Melikov a enregistré son deuxième filet de la rencontre sur le jeu de puissance pour porter l’avance des siens à 4-1. Puis avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en période, Sasha Charbonneau a ajouté un 5e but pour Fredericton qui menait à ce moment 27-15 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Un seul filet a été enregistré en troisième période alors que les Rapides ont été en mesure de dominer le temps de possession de la rondelle, tout en obtenant de bonnes chances de marquer. Ces derniers ont inscrit leur deuxième but par l’entremise d’un avantage numérique de deux hommes à 7 :53. Dominic Leblanc est celui qui a fait bouger les cordages avec un tir sur réception du cercle des mises en jeu. Ben Diamond a obtenu une mention d’aide sur le but.
Mathias Savoie, qui a effectué quelques arrêts spectaculaires en troisième période, est celui qui s’est mérité la victoire devant la cage des Red Wings.
Viacheslav Melikov (2b 2p) s’est mérité la première étoile du match. Cam Thompson (1b 3p) s’est mérité la deuxième étoile alors que Nathan Kelly (1b 2p) a été nommé la troisième étoile de la partie.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine rencontre dimanche après-midi (15h00 au Centre Jean-Daigle) alors qu’ils croiseront le fer avec leurs rivaux du nord-ouest, soit le Blizzard d’Edmundston.
