GRAND FALLS – The Yarmouth Mariners scored twice in the shootout frame, earning a 5-4 victory Friday night at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre against the Rapids.
Lorenzo Tita and Jared Pitman scored for the Mariners in the shootout session while Grand Falls was kept scoreless.
The Rapids still pick up a point in the standings, bringing their total to 7pts on the season.
Greg Leland’s squad managed to tie the game late in regulation time when Matthew Ferdinand stole the puck from Mariners’netminder Carter Arnold, shooting into an empty cage. The goal came with under 5 minutes to play in the third period.
Yarmouth took a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play on goals from Lucas Boisvert and Keefe Marshall.
The Rapids missed a great opportunity early on to get on the board as they were awarded a two-man advantage. The Mariners outshot their opponents in the period, 10 to 7.
The Rapids rebounded brilliantly in the middle frame, scoring on three occasions. Patrick Baxter cut the margin to one goal at 3:24 by scoring on a tip in front of the Mariners’ net. It was Baxter’s first as a Rapid.
Justin Garneau replied for the visitors at 9:09 following a shot from the point that was mishandled by Rapids’ goalkeeper Loic Nadeau. Garneau pounced on the rebound to put his team ahead 3-1.
Grand Falls came back with two quick goals from Caleb MacDonald to tie the game 3-3. MacDonald’s first tally came at 13:45 on the power play on a tip in front of the net. His game-tying goal came exactly a minute later after stealing the puck in the corner from a Mariners’ defenseman.
The score was tied 3–3 through two periods of play with Yarmouth ahead in shots on goal, 24 to 19.
Yarmouth went ahead 4-3 at 9:09 of the third period following a miscue in the Rapids’ end.Lorenzo Tita was credited with the goal.
However, Matthew Ferdinand would tie the game once more for Grand Falls at 15:52.
The Rapids sent 3 shots on net in the overtimeframe against 1 for their opponents.
Caleb MacDonald (2g) and Jeremy D’Astous (2a) both finished the game with 2 points for the Rapids.
Justin Garneau and Lucas Boisvert both hadrecords of 1g 1a for Yarmouth while Jared Pitman earned 2 assists.
The final tally in shots on goal was 32 to 28 for Yarmouth.
The Rapids return to action on Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as they host the West Kent Steamers. Puck drop is at 3pm.
