RAPIDS DROP A 6-3 DECISION TO THE BLIZZARD
EDMUNDSTON – Chad Wilson broke a 3-3 tie with a power play goal late in the second period, giving the Edmundston Blizzard a 6-3 victory over the Rapids on Sunday afternoon with 2745 spectators on hand at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
Wilson added his second goal of the game in an empty net in the final frame while Chrystopher Collin also tallied two goals for Edmundston.
The final score doesn’t indicate the pace of the game as the Rapids were trailing by only one goal until the final two minutes of play in regulation time.
With the rivalry very well engraved among the two North-Western teams, it was an intense start to the game as the Rapids showed lots of aggressiveness in the Blizzard end. They even got on the board first at 9:36 while playing with the man advantage. Defenseman Zac Arsenault’s shot from the point couldn’t reach the net, but Drew Toner took control of the puck in front of goaltender Antoine Lyonnais who made the initial save. However, Adam Fowlow was the first player to pounce on the rebound, scoring his 5th goal of the season.
The Blizzard answered back at 12:25 when Chrystopher Collin, well positioned in front of the crease, put in a rebound past Rapids’ netminder Tyriq Outen to tie the score.
Then on a power play at 14:14, Tristan Mercure gave Edmundston the lead. He was able to make his way unattended to the right of goalie Tyriq Outen and immediatedly shot the puck into the back of the net after receiving a cross-ice pass from Jérémy Duguay.
Grand Falls dominated 10-9 in shots on goal in the opening period.
Four goals were scored in the middle frame, two on each side. Chrystopher Collin added his second goal of the game at 4:29 after he was able to pivot in front of the net, beating the netminder with a backhand shot.
The Rapids replied at 12:20 on a power play following a great rush into the Blizzard zone. Drew Toner served a perfect pass up front to Adam Fowlow who went straight to the net, adding his second goal of the contest.
Grand Falls scored its third goal of the game at 16:22 following a solid hit from Brandon Brazeau behind the Edmundston net. The Blizzard player lost control of the puck on the ensuing play and Nash Smith didn’t hesitate to take full advantage of the situation, scoring his 14th goal of the campaign.
However, like it happened too many times during the course of the season, a bad penalty killed all the momentum which was gained by the Rapids at that point. The Blizzard took control of the situation once again, scoring on the power play at 18:05. From behind the net, Félix Rioux passed the puck in front to Chad Wilson who scored with a quick shot top shelf.
Edmundston, who dominated 17 to 8 in shots on goal in the second period, led 4-3 after two periods of play.
Both teams showed their respective strengths in the third period: the Blizzard demonstrated their great speed at times while the Rapids were aggressive along the boards while trying to create give aways by throwing the body on every occasion. Edmundston, who had a shorter bench than usual for this game, played a more defensive style in the late stages which gave the Rapids more opportunity to control the pace of play in the oppsosing end.
With the Rapids’ goaltender pulled in favor of an extra man with just under two minutes remaining, the Blizzard added two empty net goals as Chad Wilson (his 2nd of the game) and Jérémy Duguay brought the final score to 6-3.
Despite the loss, head coach Brad MacKenzie was satisfied with his team’s effort against their divisional rivals even though he mentions that they left some of their opponents’ most talented players too much open at times during the game.
“I thought our guys battled hard. We did have opportunities to tie the game in the third which we weren’t able to capitalize on. At times, I thought we gave their top players too much time and space”.
Adam Fowlow (2 goals) and his linemate Drew Toner (2 assists) played a strong game for the Rapids.
Edmundston dominated the contest on shots on goal, 34 to 27.
The Rapids will play their next three games on home ice. Wednesday night, they host the Miramichi Timberwolves for a 7:30 pm matchup at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. Friday night, the league leading Summerside Western Capitals come to town (7.30 pm) and on Sunday afternoon, the Rapids host the Fredericton Red Wings (3 pm).

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 6-3 DEVANT LE BLIZZARD
EDMUNDSTON – Chad Wilson a brisé une égalité de 3-3 lors d’une supériorité numérique en fin de deuxième période, permettant au Blizzard d’Edmundston de l’emporter au compte de 6-3 dimanche après-midi devant les Rapides. Ce sont 2745 spectateurs qui assistaient à cette partie disputée au Centre Jean-Daigle.
Wilson a ajouté son deuxième but du match dans un filet désert en troisième période alors que Chrystopher Collin obtenait également un doublé du côté des gagnants.
Le pointage final n’indique aucunement l’allure de la rencontre puisque les Rapides tiraient de l’arrière par un seul but avec seulement 2 minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire.
Avec la rivalité géographique très bien implantée au niveau de ces deux formations du Nord-Ouest, ce fut un début de match intense alors que les Rapides ont démontré beaucoup d’agressivité en zone adverse. Ils ont d’ailleurs inscrit le premier but du match lors d’une supériorité numérique à 9 :36. Le tir de la pointe de Zac Arsenault n’a pu se rendre jusqu’au filet, mais Drew Toner a pris possession de la rondelle devant la cage alors que le gardien Antoine Lyonnais a effectué un premier arrêt. Toutefois, Adam Fowlow a pris le retour pour enfiler son 5e but de la campagne.
Le Blizzard est venu assurer la réplique à 12 :25 lorsque Chrystopher Collin, bien posté à la gauche du gardien Tyriq Outen, prenait un retour de lancer pour égaliser le pointage.
Puis lors d’un avantage numérique à 14 :14, Tristan Mercure procurait les devants aux locaux. Ce dernier a réussi à foncer au filet et a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à la droite du gardien Outen.
Mentionnons que les Rapides ont dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, 10-9.
Quatre buts ont été enregistrés en deuxième période, soit deux de chaque côté. Chrystopher Collin a d’abord ajouté son deuxième but de la partie à 4 :29 alors qu’il a réussi à tromper la vigilance de Tyriq Outen à l’aide d’un tir du revers après avoir pivoté sur lui-même devant le filet.
Les Rapides ont assuré la réplique à 12 :20 lors d’un jeu de puissance à la suite d’une descente en territoire du Blizzard. Drew Toner a servi une belle passe à Adam Fowlow qui a réussi à pousser la rondelle dans le fond du filet pour son deuxième but de la rencontre.
La formation de Grand-Sault a marqué son 3e but à 16 :22 et même s’il n’est pas parvenu à toucher la rondelle, Brandon Brazeau a été à l’origine du but égalisateur après avoir appliqué une solide mise en échec à un joueur du Blizzard derrière le filet. Sur cette séquence, la rondelle s’est soudainement retrouvée devant le gardien Antoine Lyonnais, mais c’est Nash Smith qui a été le premier à la récupérer, logeant le disque dans le fond du filet pour son 14e but de la campagne.
Cependant, comme c’est arrivé plusieurs fois au cours de la dernière saison, une pénalité couteuse est venue briser le momentum que venait de gagner les Rapides à ce moment précis. Le Blizzard en a donc profité pour reprendre les devants lorsque Félix Rioux a servi une belle passe devant le filet à Chad Wilson qui a battu le gardien avec un tir dans la partie supérieure à 18 :05.
Edmundston, qui a dominé 17-8 pour les tirs au but en deuxième période, menait donc 4-3 au terme de quarante minutes de jeu.
Les deux formations ont démontré leurs forces respectives en troisième période : le Blizzard s’est servi de sa grande vitesse alors que les Rapides ont appliqué beaucoup d’agressivité dans les coins de patinoire et ont utilisé leur jeu physique pour tenter de provoquer des erreurs du côté de l’adversaire. Le Blizzard, qui évoluait avec des effectifs réduits pour cette partie, a joué un style plus défensif en fin de match, faisant en sorte que les Rapides ont connu leur meilleure période en territoire adverse au niveau du temps de possession de la rondelle.
Alors que les visiteurs tentaient d’égaliser le pointage dans les derniers instants du match, le Blizzard en a profité pour ajouter deux buts dans un filet désert, soit ceux de Chad Wilson (son 2e de la partie) et Jérémy Duguay.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie était tout de même très satisfait de l’effort fourni par sa troupe, même s’il affirme que son équipe a permis aux joueurs les plus talentueux du côté du Blizzard à se distancer davantage sur la patinoire.
« Nos joueurs ont bataillé fort tout au long du match, même si à l’occasion, nous avons donné beaucoup trop d’espace à leurs joueurs les plus talentueux. Nous avons eu de belles opportunités de niveler le pointage en troisième, mais nous n’avons malheureusement pas été en mesure d’en tirer avantage », mentionne MacKenzie.
Adam Fowlow (2 buts) et son compagnon de trio Drew Toner (2 aides) ont disputé tout un match du côté des Rapides.
Mentionnons que le Blizzard a dominé 34-27 pour les tirs au but dans cette rencontre.
Les Rapides disputeront leurs trois prochaines parties à domicile. Mercredi soir, ils accueilleront la visite des Timberwolves de Miramichi à compter de 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal. Vendredi soir, ça sera au tour des Western Capitals de Summerside de s’amener à Grand-Sault (19h30) alors que dimanche en après-midi (15h00), les visiteurs seront les Red Wings de Fredericton.
