CAMPBELLTON – The Rapids were 12 seconds away on Friday night of breaking a 7-game winless streak but fell short in the shootout session to the Campbellton Tigers by a 4-3 score.
Owen Underhill tied the score for Campbellton at 19:48 of the third period. After both teams went scoreless in the 5-minute overtime frame, Alexis Jacques was the only player to find the back of the net, giving the Tigers the win.
The score was tied 1-1 after the first twenty minutes of play as both goals were scored late in the period. Nathan Rhodes gave Grand Falls the lead at 15:36 on a one-timer. Then at 16:31, Logan Mallaley tied the score for Campbellton on a pass from Owen Underhill from the back of the net.
Thomas Larouche gave the Tigers the lead at 5:44 of the second period. Grand Falls would tie the score at the 13-minute mark, a power play tally from Médéric Allard who now has 5 goals since joining the Rapids at the trade deadline. It was also the Rapids’ first power play goal in 9 games.
Allard added his second goal of the night at 3:36 of the third period on a pass from Patrick Baxter on a two-on-one break.
But the Rapids could not hang on to the lead with less than a minute remaining. With a goalie pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, the Tigers tied the score when Owen Underhill’s one-timer found the back of the net.
The Rapids had the best scoring opportunities in the overtime period.
A total of 8 shooters, four on each side, tried to score in the shootout frame. Only defenseman Alexis Jacques was able to score, giving Campbellton its 22nd win of the season.
Despite the loss, goaltender Adam Lecours was by remarkable between the pipes, facing a total of 55 shots as he was named the first star of the game.
For the Rapids, Médéric Allard (2 goals) and Jonah Leard (2 assists) picked up 2 points to their record. Owen Underhill and Thomas Larouche both finished the game with 1g 1a for Campbellton.
The Rapids’ next game will be on Thursday night as they play the Edmundston Blizzard at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
