RAPIDS DROP A 4-3 OVERTIME DECISION AGAINST THE RED WINGS
GRAND FALLS – Alex Pellerin’s power play goal scored with just 58 seconds played in the overtime frame gave the Fredericton Red Wings a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon against the hometown Rapids.
Pellerin, who’s tally was his second of the contest, scored the game winner with a powerful slap shot that went through the pads of goaltender Nolan Boyd.
Once again, the Rapids played a good solid game at both ends of the ice. They were even ahead by a score of 3-1 after two periods of play in a hard-fought battle where hits to the body dominated the major part of the game. Both teams were able to score twice with the man advantage, but it was Pellerin’s overtime goal on a 4 on 3 power play that finally made the difference.
Head coach Brad MacKenzie wished that some calls would have gone his team’s way, especially for high sticking infractions which left some of his players out of the game in the third period.
“We had to kill 7 penalties today and we were down three forwards in the third period as a result of high sticks that cut some of our players, so we missed three double-minor opportunities”.
The Red Wings played a very physical game in the third, hitting their opponents on every occasion. However, those high sticking incidents were hard to accept for the Rapids coach.
“That was the difference maker and our players deserved better”.
Alex Pellerin scored his first goal of the game at 8:41 of the opening period following a turnover by the Rapids in their own territory. Pellerin’s shot at the far corner of the net gave his team a 1-0 lead.
Grand Falls replied at 8 :41 when Evan Jackson’s slap shot beat netminder Jack Grant on the glove side. For Jackson, it was his 5th goal this season.
Then at 15:32, while the Rapids were on a power play, Brandon Brazeau got the puck through traffic in front of the Red Wings’ net, finding the top corner.
Grand Falls showed lots of intensity and puck control in that opening period, dominating 13 to 5 in shots on goal.
The Rapids continued their aggressive play at the other end during the second period. With the man advantage at 3:21, Miguel Paré completed a beautiful three-way passing play with a one-timer in front of the net, registering his 8th goal of the campaign.
Grand Falls sent 10 shots on goal in the middle frame compared to 6 for Fredericton. Even if it appeared he wasn’t very busy between the pipes, Nolan Boyd came up big a few times with key saves which kept his team in the lead.
As previously mentioned, the Red Wings played a very agressive style of play in the third period, hitting their opponents hard along the boards while getting quickly to the puck carrier. Their efforts resulted in 14 shots on goal.
Riley Burtt reduced the margin to a single goal by scoring at 6:25 with a shot from the corner. Burtt then got the game-tying goal mid way in the period by taking a rebound in front of the net.
The Rapids were awarded a minor penalty at the very end of regulation time, which gave the Red Wings a 4 on 3 power play to start overtime. They didn’t miss their chance to add their 19th victory of the season. For Grand Falls, it was a first loss in three games, all played on home ice. However, the team did pick up 5 points in the standings over that three-game span.
A total of 974 spectators were on hand at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre for Sunday afternoon’s contest.
With his two goals, including the game winner, Alex Pellerin was chosen the first star. The second mention went to his teammate Riley Burtt (2 goals) while Brandon Brazeau of the Rapids (1g 1a) was named the third star.
The Rapids will hit the road on Thursday as they visit the Summerside Western Capitals on the island. They will then return to Grand Falls next Sunday to play their final home game of the season as the Pictou County Weeks Crushers come to town for an afternoon matchup.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 4-3 EN SURTEMPS FACE AUX RED WINGS
GRAND-SAULT – Le but en avantage numérique d’Alex Pellerin, marqué à 58 secondes de jeu en prolongation, a permis aux Red Wings de Fredericton de soutirer un gain de 4-3 dimanche après-midi aux dépens des Rapides.
Pellerin, qui en était à un deuxième but dans cette rencontre, a procuré la victoire aux siens à l’aide d’un tir frappé entre les jambières du gardien Nolan Boyd.
Les Rapides ont disputé un bon match dans l’ensemble, même qu’ils étaient en avance 3-1 après quarante minutes de jeu. Ce fut un duel passablement physique alors que les coups d’épaule ont dominé la majeure partie du match. D’ailleurs, chaque équipe a réussi à inscrire deux buts sur le jeu de puissance, mais c’est finalement celui enregistré par Pellerin qui a fait la différence dans la partie.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad MacKenzie aurait souhaité cependant que quelques infractions puissent aller du bord de son équipe, notamment celles pour bâton élevé.
« Nous avons dû écouler 7 pénalités aujourd’hui et celle attribuée à la toute fin du temps réglementaire a fait mal puisqu’elle a contribué au but gagnant ».
Les Red Wings ont préconisé un style physique en troisième période, frappant leurs adversaires à la moindre occasion. Trois joueurs du côté des Rapides ont été atteints par des bâtons élevés, ce qui n’a pas plu à l’entraîneur-chef.
« Ceci a fait la différence dans le match et je crois que nos joueurs méritaient un meilleur sort.
Alex Pellerin a inscrit son premier but de la partie à 8 :41 en première période suite à un revirement de la part des Rapides dans leur propre territoire. Pellerin y est allé d’un tir du côté le plus éloigné du filet pour permettre aux visiteurs de prendre les devants.
Les Rapides ont assuré la réplique très peu de temps après, soit à 8 :41, lorsque le tir frappé de Evan Jackson a battu le gardien Jack Grant du côté de la mitaine. Pour ce dernier, il s’agissait d’un 5e but cette saison.
Puis à 15 :32 lors d’une supériorité numérique, Brandon Brazeau procurait les devants aux locaux à l’aide d’un tir voilé qui a battu le gardien dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Les Rapides, qui ont démontré beaucoup d’intensité au cours de ce premier engagement, ont largement dominé leurs adversaires au chapitre des tirs au but : 13-5.
La formation de Grand-Sault a poursuivi son travail acharné en territoire adverse lors de la période médiane. Lors d’un jeu de puissance à 3 :21, Miguel Paré marquait sur un beau jeu de passes à trois joueurs en territoire des Red Wings. Paré, qui enregistrait son 8e but de la campagne, à marqué avec un tir sur réception juste devant la cage des visiteurs.
Grand-Sault a dirigé 10 lancers sur le but adverse en deuxième période, comparativement à 6 du côté de Fredericton. Même s’il n’a pas semblé être trop occupé entre ses poteaux, Nolan Boyd a su résister brillamment à quelques attaques dangereuses de la part des Red Wings.
Tel que mentionné, ces derniers ont entrepris la troisième période en étant très agressifs sur le porteur de la rondelle, tout en frappant pratiquement tout ce qui bougeait sur la patinoire. Les Red Wings ont donc réussi à contrôler le jeu davantage, dirigeant 14 tirs en direction du filet des Rapides.
Riley Burtt a réduit l’écart à 3-2 à 6 :25 l’aide d’un tir dirigé presque du coin de la patinoire. Burtt est ensuite venu égaliser le pointage mi-chemin dans l’engagement en prenant un retour de lancer devant le filet.
Les Rapides ont écopé d’une pénalité mineure en toute fin de troisième période, ce qui a permis aux Red Wings de débuter la prolongation avec l’avantage d’un homme. Ils n’ont pas raté leur chance pour signer la victoire, une 19e pour eux cette saison. Pour ce qui est des Rapides, il s’agissait d’un premier revers en trois matchs, mais l’équipe récolte néanmoins un 5e point lors de ses trois dernières parties, toutes disputées à domicile.
Une foule de 974 spectateurs était au rendez-vous pour ce duel disputé au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
En marquant deux fois, dont celui de la victoire, Alex Pellerin a été choisi la première étoile de la partie. La deuxième mention est allée à son coéquipier Riley Burtt (2 buts) alors que Brandon Brazeau des Rapides fut sélectionné la troisième étoile alors qu’il a connu une bonne performance en attaque de 1 but et 1 mention d’aide.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie sur la route alors qu’ils rendront visite jeudi soir aux Western Capitals de Summerside. Ils seront de retour à domicile dimanche prochain pour y disputer leur dernier match local de la saison alors que les visiteurs seront les Weeks Crushers de Pictou County à compter de 15h00 en après-midi.
