RAPIDS DROP A 4-2 DECISION TO THE TIGERS
CAMPBELLTON – Jérémie Hébert broke a 2-2 tie at 11 :53 of the third period as the Campbellton Tigers skated away with a 4-2 victory against the Rapids on a rare MHL Monday afternoon contest.
Hébert sent a one-timer into the back of the net, scoring his first goal in a Tigers’ uniform since his arrival via trade last month from the Miramichi Timberwolves.
Zac Arsenault, who played three seasons with the Rapids, also scored his first goal with Campbellton, coming at 19:58 of the final period in an empty net.
The Rapids took a 2-1 lead at 5:04 of the third period on a 5 on 3 power play. Keegan Hunt, with his 3rd of the season, was credited with the goal which was scored on a shot from the point.
Campbellton tied the score at 9:52, also with the man advantage, on Connor Richard’s wrist shot from the top of the circle.
Despite the loss, Rapids’ netminder Gio DiMattia was sensational between the pipes, blocking a total of 39 shots. Some of those saves were done in spectacular fashion as he flashed the leather more than once, frustrating the Tigers’ players while keeping his team in the game.
There was no scoring in the opening period even though both teams had some great opportunities to get on the board. Gio DiMattia faced a total of 15 shots, making some key saves when the Tigers dominated puck control in Grand Falls’ territory.
At the other end, Olivier Leclair was also solid between the pipes. His best save came on a break away from Dominic Leblanc early in the contest.
The Tigers came out strong in the second period, getting a number of chances to score as DiMattia stood tall once again. Campbellton was finally able to cash in on a power play at 10:25 on Jordan Brière’s wrister from the slot. It was Brière’s 16th goal of the season.
However, Campbellton’s lead didn’t last very long. Less than a minute after the go-ahead goal, Hunter Gartley’s shot from the point bounced off the back board, hitting the goaltender’s pad as the puck found the back of the net. It was Gartley’s first of the season as the Rapids tied the score at 11:24.
Dominic Leblanc had a great opportunity to put the Rapids ahead with less than 5 minutes remaining in the frame as he came in on a two-on-one break. His shot hit the post, keeping the game tied.
Through two periods of play, the Tigers led 31 to 16 in shots on goal.
After trailing 2-1 early in the third period, the Tigers stormed back with three unanswered goals, including Jérémie Hébert’s game winner close to the mid way point of the frame.
The final tally in shots on goal was 43 to 24 in favour of Campbellton.
With the victory, the Tigers now hold a 9-point lead over the Rapids for 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Playing in their 30th game of the season, Grand Falls’ record now stands at 11 wins, 18 losses and 1 overtime defeat for a total of 23 points.
Both the Tigers and the Rapids will square off again on Friday night in Campbellton for a 7pm start.

LES TIGRES L’EMPORTENT 4-2 FACE AUX RAPIDES
CAMPBELLTON – Jérémie Hébert a brisé une égalité de 2-2 à 11 :53 en troisième période, permettant aux Tigres de Campbellton de soutirer une victoire de 4-2 lundi après-midi face aux Rapides de Grand-Sault.
Hébert a dirigé un tir sur réception dans le fond du filet, enregistrant ainsi son tout premier but avec les Tigres cette saison. Ce dernier s’est amené à Campbellton le mois dernier à la suite d’un échange effectué avec les Timberwolves de Miramichi.
Zac Arsenault, anciennement des Rapides, a lui aussi inscrit son premier but dans l’uniforme des Tigres, obtenu à 19 :58 dans une cage déserte.
Les Rapides ont pris les devants 2-1 dans la rencontre à 5 :04 du troisième tiers temps lors d’une supériorité numérique à 5 contre 3. Keegan Hunt a été crédité du but, son 3e de la saison, à la suite d’un tir provenant de la ligne bleue.
Les Tigres ont cependant égalisé le pointage à 9 :52, également avec l’avantage d’un homme. Connor Richard est celui qui a ramené le tout à la case départ à l’aide d’un tir des poignets du cercle de mise en jeu.
La vedette incontestée de la partie du côté des Rapides a été le gardien de but Gio DiMattia qui a bloqué 39 rondelles. Certains de ses arrêts ont été effectués de façon spectaculaire, frustrant ses opposants tout en gardant son équipe dans le match.
Aucun but n’a été enregistré lors de la période initiale même si chaque formation a été menaçante à quelques reprises autour du filet adverse. Gio DiMattia a fait face à 15 tirs de la part des Tigres, fermant la porte plus d’une fois alors que les locaux bourdonnaient en zone des Rapides.
À l’autre bout, Olivier Leclair a lui aussi été solide devant le filet. Son meilleur arrêt est survenu tôt dans le match lorsqu’il a repoussé un tir du très dangereux Dominic Leblanc lors d’une échappée.
Les Tigres sont sortis forts en deuxième période, obtenant plusieurs bonnes chances de marquer alors que DiMattia a encore une fois tenu son bout. Ce dernier a finalement cédé devant la pression exercée par ses opposants alors que Campbellton prenait les devants lors d’une supériorité numérique à 10 :25 grâce au filet de Jordan Brière, son 16e de la campagne.
L’avance des Tigres aura toutefois été de courte durée puisque les Rapides ont nivelé la marque moins d’une minute plus tard avec le premier filet de la campagne du défenseur Hunter Gartley. Ce dernier a dirigé un tir qui avait raté le filet, mais la rondelle est venue frapper le gardien derrière la jambière pour finalement se retrouver dans le fond du filet.
Dominic Leblanc est venu bien près de procurer les devants aux Rapides avec moins de 5 minutes à écouler dans l’engagement lors d’une descente à deux contre un. Le pointage est toutefois demeuré à égalité après quarante minutes de jeu, mais ce sont les Tigres qui détenaient l’avantage au chapitre des tirs au but, 31-16.
Après avoir tiré de l’arrière 2-1 tôt en troisième période, les Tigres sont revenus de l’arrière en y allant de trois buts sans réplique, dont le filet victorieux de Jérémie Hébert avec moins de 9 minutes à écouler dans la rencontre.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but a favorisé les Tigres, 43-24.
Avec cette victoire, les Tigres devancent maintenant les Rapides par 9 points pour possession du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord.
Disputant un 30e match cette saison, les Rapides détiennent présentement un dossier de 11 victoires, 18 revers et 1 défaite en surtemps pour un total de 23 points.
À noter que les Tigres et les Rapides en viendront à nouveau aux prises vendredi soir, encore une fois du côté de Campbellton à compter de 19h00.
