RAPIDS DROP A 3-1 DECISION TO THE TIGERS
CAMPBELLTON – The Rapids dropped their 6th game in a row on Friday night, losing by a score of 3-1 in Campbellton.
The Tigers scored once in the middle frame and two more times in the third period to earn their 16th victory of the season. It also leaves them tied for first place in the Eastlink North division with 37 points, which is the same total for Edmundston and Summerside.
As for the Rapids, their record is now at .500 on the season (14 wins and 14 losses). They trail Miramichi by 4 points in the standings with two games in hand however over the Timberwolves.
The Rapids were outshot in the contest 34 to 29 and went scoreless on the power play for a 4th consecutive game. However, the penalty kill was top notch for Greg Leland’s squad as they kept their opponents scoreless in that department. The highlight of the first period was most certainly the 5-minute major penalty that the Rapids killed off at the 6-minute mark, keeping the game scoreless.
No goals were scored through twenty minutes of play as Campbellton slightly outshot Grand Falls 8 to 7.
The first goal of the game came at 18:21 of the second period as the Tigers jumped ahead. Well positioned behind the net, Connor Richard fed a great pass in front to Kiefer Lyons who put the puck behind Frédéric Plourde.
The Tigers added their second goal at 5:11 of the third period on an odd man rush. Jake Kyle, who once suited up for the Rapids, gave Campbellton a 2-0 lead.
After being kept scoreless over five consecutive periods of play, the Rapids got on the board at the 12-minute mark of the final period thanks to some great forechecking in the opposing end. Mathis Huot scored on a one-timer, beating goaltender Olivier Leclair top shelf. It was Huot’s 7th tally of the season, assisted by Marc-Antoine Belzile and Ben Diamond.
The Tigers went on a power play moments after the Rapids’ goal, but netminder Frédéric Plourde shut the door on a couple of great scoring chances by the home team.
Justin David however added the Tigers’ third goal in an empty net with 37 seconds remaining in regulation time.
The Rapids will play their next game on Thursday night in Edmundston against the Blizzard before hosting the Valley Wildcats on Friday at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Earlier in the day, the Rapids acquired 18-year-old forward Tomasz Szczerba from the Aurora Tigers of the OJHL in return for future considerations. The Toronto native should be joining the team soon, as should forwards Ethan Johnson and Graham Gamache, also acquired early in the week.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 3-1 DEVANT LES TIGRES
CAMPBELLTON – Les Rapides ont encaissé un 6e revers consécutif vendredi soir, s’inclinant 3- devant les Tigres de Campbellton.
Ces derniers ont marqué une fois en deuxième période et ont ajouté deux filets lors du troisième vingt pour se mériter une 16e victoire cette saison. Ils rejoignent du même coup Edmundston et Summerside au premier rang de la division Eastlink Nord alors que les trois formations totalisent 37 points.
Quant aux Rapides, leur dossier est maintenant de 14 victoires et 14 défaites. Ils accusent un retard de 4 points sur Miramichi pour l’obtention du 4e rang dans la division Nord, mais les Rapides possèdent deux matchs en main sur les Timberwolves.
Les Rapides ont été dominés 34 à 29 au chapitre des tirs au but dans cette rencontre et pour un 4e match de suite, ils n’ont pas été en mesure de marquer sur le jeu de puissance. Toutefois, la troupe de Greg Leland a été très efficace à se défendre à court d’un homme, comme ce fut le cas d’ailleurs lors du premier engagement alors que l’on a été en mesure d’écouler sans aucun dégât une pénalité majeure de 5 minutes. Ce fut sans contredit le fait saillant de la première période qui a vu les Tigres dominé légèrement pour les tirs au but (8-7).
Le premier but de la rencontre est survenu à 18 :21 en deuxième période. Bien positionné derrière le filet adverse, Connor Richard a servi une belle passe devant à Kiefer Lyons qui est parvenu à déjouer le gardien Frédéric Plourde, procurant aux Tigres une avance de 1-0.
Campbellton allait ajouter un deuxième filet à 5 :11 de la période médiane lors d’une attaque en surnombre. Jake Kyle, un ancien porte-couleurs des Rapides, est celui qui a donné les devants 2-0 aux locaux.
Après avoir été blanchi de la feuille de pointage pendant cinq périodes consécutives, les Rapides ont été en mesure de s’inscrire à la marque lors de la 12e minute de jeu en deuxième période, grâce surtout à un solide échec avant en territoire adverse. Mathis Huot a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, trompant la vigilance du gardien Oliver Leclair dans la partie supérieure du filet. Il s’agissait d’un 7e but pour Huot cette saison; Marc-Antoine Belzile et Ben Diamond ont chacun obtenu une mention d’aide.
Quelques secondes à peine après le filet des Rapides, les Tigres ont bien failli ajouter à leur avance lors d’une supériorité numérique, mais Frédéric Plourde a effectué quelques arrêts clés pour garder son équipe dans le match.
Justin David est cependant venu ajouter un 3e but pour Campbellton dans une cage déserte avec seulement 37 secondes à écouler en temps réglementaire.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie jeudi soir au Centre Jean-Daigle d’Edmundston face au Blizzard. Grand-Sault accueillera ensuite les Wildcats de Valley vendredi soir prochain au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Plus tôt en journée, les Rapides ont fait l’acquisition de l’attaquant de 18 ans Tomasz Szczerba des Tigers de Aurora de la OJHL, et ce, en retour de considérations futures. Originaire de Toronto, Szczerba devrait joindre les Rapides sous peu, tout comme les attaquants Ethan Johnson et Graham Gamache, acquis eux aussi au cours de la dernière semaine.
