RAPIDS DEFEAT TIGERS IN OVERTIME
CAMPBELLTON – Nico Laforge’s second goal of the night scored at 1:36 of overtime propelled the Grand Falls Rapids to a 4-3 victory Friday night on the road over the Campbellton Tigers.
Laforge, who now has two overtime winning goals to his credit in the last two victories by the Rapids, tipped a pass from Dominic Leblanc into the back of the net as the Rapids were playing on a 4 on 3-man advantage.
Grand Falls held a 3-0 lead through two periods of play but a couple of costly penalties in the third got the Tigers on the comeback trail. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, Ludovic Harrison tallied his second of the night on a power play to send the game into overtime.
The Rapids got some good goaltending from Morgan Kini throughout the contest as he faced a total of 50 shots on net. Meanwhile, the Rapids sent 33 pucks on netminder Ulrick Roussel of the Tigers.
Kini stopped all 12 shots he faced in the opening frame and made his best saves early on as the Tigers went on a couple of two on one breaks, looking to grab the lead.
Kini’s performance helped his teammates gain momentum as they got on the board at the mid-way point of the first period. After Joakim Bergeron’s initial shot missed the net, Nico Laforge took the rebound and beat netminder Roussel to give Grand Falls a 1-0 lead. It was Laforge’s second goal since joining the Rapids.
Nick Tremere’s squad doubled its lead at 12:03 when Bryce Thomson intercepted the puck at the Tigers’ blue line, sending a perfect wrister from the slot for his first of the season.
Then at 17:21, the Rapids took advantage of another miscue from the Tigers as they came in on a three on two break. Bryce Thomson’s cross ice pass found James Rogers who sent a one-timer behind Roussel for his second tally of the campaign, giving the Rapids a 3-0 lead.
Grand Falls led 13 to 12 in shots on goal through twenty minutes of play and was by far the most opportunistic team at that point.
No goals were scored in the middle frame even though things opened up quite significantly at times on the offensive front. The Rapids had a couple of great opportunities to add to their lead when Nico Laforge and Dominic Leblanc went on successive breakaways, but they were denied on both occasions. At the other end, Morgan Kini also had a strong period, especially in the latter stages as the Tigers were playing with the man advantage,
Grand Falls sent 20 shots on net in the second period compared to 10 for Campbellton.
The Tigers were dominant in the third period, sending 18 shots on Morgan Kini and taking advantage of a couple of power plays, including the game tying goal at 18:17 by Ludovic Harrison. Connor Richard started the comeback for the Tigers at 5:47, beating Kini from the corner. Then at 16:43, Harrison scored his first of the game on a one-timer to get the Tigers within one goal.
The Rapids did capitalize however on a 4 on 3 power play in overtime to grab the victory, their 12th of the season as they now trail the Tigers by 8 points for 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
Nick Tremere’s squad will be on the road once again on Sunday night as they travel to PEI to face the Summerside Western Capitals. Puck drop is at 7pm at Credit Union Place.

*Nico Laforge (2g) and Bryce Thomson (1g 1a) both added two points to their record on Friday night.
It was Laforge’s second OT winner of the season. His first one came on February 16th on home ice as Grand Falls upset the league leading Summerside Western Capitals 2-1.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT EN SURTEMPS FACE AUX TIGRES
CAMPBELLTON – Le deuxième but du match de Nico Laforge, marqué à 1 :36 en surtemps, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de disposer des Tigres de Campbellton au compte de 4-3 vendredi soir au Memorial Civic Centre.
Laforge, qui en était à un deuxième filet gagnant lors des deux derniers gains de son équipe, a fait dévier la rondelle dans le fond de la cage sur une passe de Dominic Leblanc devant le filet. Les Rapides ont donc su profiter d’une supériorité numérique de 4 contre 3 après que Campbellton eut été puni pour avoir eu trop d’hommes sur la patinoire.
Les Rapides étaient en avance 3-0 après deux périodes de jeu, mais deux pénalités couteuses en troisième période ont permis aux Tigres d’effectuer une brillante remontée. Avec moins de deux minutes à écouler en temps réglementaire, Ludovic Harrison a inscrit son deuxième but de la partie lors d’une supériorité numérique pour égaliser le pointage et ainsi forcer la prolongation.
Les Rapides ont obtenu une solide performance de la part du gardien Morgan Kini qui en était à un deuxième départ devant le filet. Son vis-à-vis Ulrick Roussel a pour sa part fait face à 33 lancers.
Kini a repoussé les 12 rondelles dirigées en sa direction en première période, s’illustrant surtout en début de rencontre lorsque les Tigres ont obtenu deux attaques à deux contre un en territoire adverse.
Sa performance a d’ailleurs permis aux Rapides de gagner le momentum et prendre les devants mi-chemin dans l’engagement.
Après que le tir de Joakim Bergeron eut raté le filet, Nico Laforge a pris contrôle du retour pour enfiler la rondelle dans le fond de la cage pour son 2e but de la campagne à 10 :19.
Grand-Sault a doublé son avance à 12 :03 lorsque Bryce Thomson est parvenu à intercepter une passe à la ligne bleue des Tigres pour ensuite diriger un tir parfait de l’enclave, trompant la vigilance du gardien Ulrick Roussel. Il s’agissait du premier filet de Thomson cette saison.
Puis à 17 :21, les Rapides ont encore une fois profité d’une bévue des Tigres pour s’amener en surnombre en territoire adverse. Bryce Thomson a servi une belle passe transversale à James Rogers qui n’a pas raté sa chance de marquer à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, procurant aux Rapides une avance de 3-0.
Ces derniers ont dominé 13-12 au chapitre des tirs au but après vingt minutes de jeu, tout en étant l’équipe la plus opportuniste.
Aucun but n’a été enregistré lors de la période médiane même si le jeu a été très ouvert par moments. Les Rapides ont obtenu de bonnes chances d’ajouter à leur avance lorsque Nico Laforge et Dominic Leblanc se sont amenés sur des échappés seuls devant le gardien, mais Roussel a eu le dernier mot chaque fois. Son vis-à-vis Morgan Kiini a lui aussi été très efficace, surtout en fin de période lorsque les Tigres ont bénéficié d’une supériorité numérique.
Grand-Sault a dirigé 20 lancers en direction du filet adverse au cours du second engagement contre 10 pour Campbellton.
Les Tigres ont été dominants en troisième période, dirigeant 18 tirs au filet et profitant de deux supériorités numériques pour s’inscrire au pointage, dont le but égalisateur de Ludovic Harrison à 18 :17. Connor Richard est celui qui avait enregistré le premier but des locaux à 5 :47, déjouant le gardien Kini d’un tir provenant du coin de la patinoire. Puis à 16 :43, Harrison y est allé de son premier filet de la rencontre à l’aide d’un tir sur réception pour réduire l’écart à un seul but.
Les Rapides ont profité à leur tour de l’avantage d’un homme pour marquer le but de la victoire en surtemps, signant ainsi une 12e victoire cette saison. Grand-Sault se retrouve à 8 points maintenant des Tigres et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord.
La troupe de Nick Tremere sera de retour en action dimanche soir, encore une fois sur la route, alors que les Rapides affronteront les Western Capitals de Summerside à compter de 19h00 au Credit Union Place.
