RAPIDS DEFEAT THE EDMUNDSTON BLIZZARD 7-3
EDMUNDSTON – The Rapids scored five unanswered goals, including three in the final period of play, as they skated away with a 7-3 victory Sunday afternoon against the Blizzard.
It was the first of many more meetings to come between these two Northwestern rivals, witnessed by a crowd of 2072 at the Jean-Daigle Centre in Edmundston.
Yannic Bastarache led the way offensively for the Rapids with a hat trick. He scored all of his goals in the second period, including the game winner late in the frame.
The Rapids power play unit was very effective, producing four goals. Grand Falls also added a shorthanded tally in the third period.
Dominic Leblanc (2 goals), Dominic Deschênes and Bryce Thomson completed the scoring for the Rapids who finish off their first weekend of play with a .500 mark.
Frédéric Plourde was solid between the pipes, making a total of 28 saves. He flashed the leather more than once in the contest, frustrating some of the more dangerous Blizzard players from up close.
It was difficult to predict such a final result after twenty minutes of play as the Blizzard took a 2-1 lead. Peter Amanatidis and Tristan Fortin scored for Edmundston in the opening frame while Dominic Leblanc found the back of the net for the Rapids on a one-timer.
The Rapids did not waste any time to tie the score early in the second period following a turnover by Edmundston in its own territory. Yannic Bastarache took possession of a loose puck and beat netminder Samuel LeBlanc with only 47 seconds left off the clock.
Then with a two-man advantage, the Blizzard regained the lead at 13:49 on a one-timer from Jérémy Duguay.
It was however the Rapids’ turn minutes later to take advantage of some discipline issues by their opponents. This might have been the turning point of the game as the Blizzard allowed two power play goals in a span of only 28 seconds. Yannic Bastarache tied the score 3-3 after taking a rebound in front of the net at 16:29, then at 16:57, Bastarache responded once again as he completed his hat trick on a screen shot, giving the Rapids their first lead of the game.
Grand Falls led 4-3 after two periods of play.
Bastarache came close to adding a fourth goal early in the third period as he broke free into Blizzard territory, only to be denied by the Blizzard netminder. The Rapids would however add a 5th goal at 2:18 of the frame while playing with the man advantage. Dominic Leblanc scored on a quick slap shot that left the goalie without any chance to make the stop.
Grand Falls took a 6-3 lead at 4:13 on a two-on-one break. Dominic Deschênes, a St.Joseph native, took a shot that found the back of the net, which also happened to be his first career goal in junior A.
The Rapids’ 7th goal came at 13:01 while they were playing shorthanded. Patrice Leblanc came in on a breakaway but was stopped by Samuel LeBlanc. However, Bryce Thomson was following close behind and took the rebound, bringing the final score to 7-3.
The Blizzard finished the game with an advantage of 31 to 30 in shots on goal.
The Rapids are thus successful in their first game on the road as they showed more offensive punch than on Friday night against the Fredericton Red Wings. They were also very effective on the back end, blocking many shots while performing remarkably well when playing shorthanded.
The Rapids will play their next game on home ice as they host the Miramichi Timberwolves on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7:30 pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 7-3 FACE AU BLIZZARD
EDMUNDSTON – Une poussée de cinq buts sans réplique, dont trois enregistrés lors du troisième vingt, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de l’emporter au compte de 7-3 dimanche après-midi contre le Blizzard.
Plus de 2000 spectateurs étaient présents au Centre Jean-Daigle d’Edmundston pour assister à ce premier duel de la rivalité du nord-ouest.
Yannic Bastarache a été la bougie d’allumage en attaque du côté des Rapides, obtenant un tour du chapeau. Il a d’ailleurs inscrit tous ses buts lors du second engagement, dont celui de la victoire.
Il va sans dire que les Rapides ont été très efficaces au niveau des unités spéciales, marquant à quatre reprises en supériorité numérique tout en ajoutant un filet en désavantage numérique.
Dominic Leblanc, avec deux buts, Dominic Deschênes et Bryce Thomson ont complété le pointage pour les vainqueurs.
Frédéric Plourde a pour sa part été solide devant le filet, repoussant 28 tirs, dont plusieurs de façon spectaculaire avec l’aide de la mitaine.
Il était difficile de prévoir un tel scénario tôt dans la rencontre alors que le Blizzard avait réussi à prendre une avance de 2-1 au terme de vingt minutes de jeu.
Peter Amanatidis et Tristan Fortin ont enfilé les buts des locaux en première période alors que Dominic Leblanc a marqué le filet des Rapides à l’aide d’un tir sur réception.
Les Rapides n’ont pas mis de temps à égaliser la marque en début de deuxième période suite à un revirement de la part du Blizzard dans son propre territoire. Yannic Bastarache en a profité pour s’emparer d’une rondelle libre pour tromper la vigilance du gardien Samuel LeBlanc à 47 secondes seulement du début de l’engagement.
Lors d’une supériorité numérique de deux hommes, le Blizzard a repris les devants à 13 :49 grâce au tir sur réception de Jérémy Duguay.
Ce fut cependant au tour du Blizzard de jouer la carte de l’indiscipline quelques minutes plus tard, ce qui leur a d’ailleurs couté deux buts en seulement 28 secondes d’intervalle. Yannic Bastarache avait d’abord niveler le pointage 3-3 en prenant un retour de lancer devant le filet à 16 :29, puis à 16 :57, Bastarache complétait son tour du chapeau en y allant d’un tir voilé de l’enclave, procurant aux Rapides leur première avance du match.
C’était donc 4-3 en faveur de Grand-Sault après quarante minutes de jeu.
Bastarache est venu bien près d’ajouter un 4e but tôt en troisième période lors d’une échappée seule avec le gardien. Ce dernier a toutefois résisté, mais les Rapides allaient toutefois ajouter un 5e but à 2 :18 alors qu’ils se retrouvaient avec l’avantage d’un homme. Dominic Leblanc est celui qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception, son deuxième du match, ne laissant aucune chance au gardien Samuel LeBlanc.
Grand-Sault a porté la marque 6-3 lors d’une attaque en surnombre en territoire adverse. Dominic Deschênes, originaire de St-Joseph, a laissé partir un tir des poignets qui a trouvé le fond du filet à 4 :13, enregistrant ainsi son tout premier but au niveau junior A.
Le 7e but des Rapides a été enregistré en infériorité numérique à 13 :01. Patrice Leblanc s’est amené seul devant le gardien, mais ce dernier a effectué l’arrêt. Toutefois, Bryce Thomson s’est emparé du retour pour permettre aux Rapides de s’assurer de la victoire.
Le Blizzard a légèrement dominé la rencontre au chapitre des tirs au but, 31-30.
Les Rapides vengent ainsi de belle façon leur revers encaissé vendredi soir en lever de rideau face aux Red Wings de Fredericton. La troupe de l’entraîneur Greg Leland a démontré beaucoup plus de mordant en attaque et a réussi à bloquer plusieurs rondelles en défensive, tout en étant très efficace à court d’un homme.
Le prochain match des Rapides aura lieu vendredi soir prochain alors qu’ils accueilleront la visite des Timberwolves de Miramichi à compter de 19h30 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
