RAPIDS DEFEAT THE BLIZZARD IN THE SHOOTOUT FRAME
EDMUNDSTON, NB – For a second game in a row for the Rapids, the final result was decided in the shootout frame but this time, Grand Falls came out victorious as they brilliantly handled the Edmundston Blizzard by a score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
Nash Smith was the only player to score in the shootout session, beating the Blizzard netminder with a quick shot to his right.
The win puts an end to a 9-game losing streak by the Rapids. Grand Falls also picks up its first victory in 2020 as well as a first win in two seasons on Blizzard ice.
The Rapids tied the score 3-3 at 7:19 of the third period on Matthew MacKay’s second of the game while his team was playing with the man advantage. MacKay scored on a rebound as he was well positioned to the side of the Edmundston net.
Then not long after that tying goal, Drew Toner gave the Rapids their first lead of the game after he went in alone into Blizzard territory. His shot found the short side of the net to bring the score to 4-3 in favour of the visitors.
The Blizzard came back however to tie the score with less than 3 minutes remaining in regulation time. Mitch McLeod found a loose puck behind Nolan Boyd who couldn’t secure it with his glove.
Boyd was however a key factor in the Rapids’ victory on Sunday afternoon as he made multiple key saves, notably in the overtime session. He even stopped a sure goal by the Blizzard with only 4 seconds remaining on the clock. Boyd was also perfect in the shootout session, allowing no goals to his opponents on 4 shots.
For head coach Brad MacKenzie, Boyd’s solid performance and the strong showing by the special teams were the key factors in the win.
“To win hockey games, you need your goaltending and special teams to be difference makers. Nolan Boyd, our power play and penalty kill units were huge in this game”.
MacKenzie also mentions that a weight has been lifted off his players’ shoulders with the victory.
“We’ve talked a lot lately about sticking with it and we did just that today. Down 2-0 and 3-2, we came back to tie the game on both occasions. We did regroup after giving up the tying goal in the final couple of minutes in the third.”
It was a typical Blizzard-Rapids’ tilt beerween these two rival teams from the North Western region. There was some lack of discipline on both sides, but still lots of intensity.
Only one goal was scored in the opening period. Chrystopher Collin got the home team on the board at 8:07 after taking possession of a loose puck in front of the Rapids’ net. He was able to beat goaltender Nolan Boyd by sliding the puck with one hand into the far corner of the net. It was Collin’s 32nd tally of the season, a team record.
In the middle frame, the contest became more physical as both teams took bad penalties which resulted in goals.
The Blizzard added to their lead at 7:41 on Paul Leroux’s 11th of the season after he shot into an open net after receiving a pass in front from linemate Chrystopher Collin.
The Rapids, who showed more intensity in the opposing end in the middle frame, were able to reduce the margin at 8:47 when defenseman Tyler Browning’s shot fooled Blizzard goalie Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert with lots of traffic in front of his crease.
Then while playing with the man advantage, Grand Falls tied the score at 13:22 when another defenseman, this time Matthew Mackay, found the back of the net. MacKay came in close to the faceoff circle and with many bodies positioned in front of the Blizzard netminder, sent a wrist shot in the top corner of the net for his 10th of the season.
However, all the momentum that was gained following the tying goal quickly evaporated as the Rapids visited the penalty box a few times. The Blizzard even went on a 5 on 3 power play, a situation which they took advantage by regaining the lead. Evan White scored Edmundston’s third goal as he sent a quick shot from the slot, beating goalie Nolan Boyd in the top corner.
The third period was a little less physical as both teams played with more discipline, obtaining good scoring chances.
The Blizzard dominated the game in shots on goal, 43 to 29.
Thanks to his strong performance in net, Nolan Boyd was chosen the game’s first star. Matthew MacKay, with 2 goals, was selected the second star. In addition to his game-winning goal, Nash Smith also picked up 2 assists in the contest. Bobby Labelle also had 2 assists.
For the Blizzard, Evan White (1g 2a) and Tristan Gagnon (3a) each picked up 3 points to their credit.
The Rapids will play their next game on Wednesday night as they travel to Campbellton to face the Tigers. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm at the Memorial Civic Centre.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT CONTRE LE BLIZZARD EN TIRS DE BARRAGE
EDMUNDSTON, NB – Pour un deuxième match de suite pour les Rapides, ce sont les tirs de barrage qui ont décidé l’issue finale du match. Cette fois cependant, la formation de Grand-Sault est sortie victorieuse, l’emportant de manière brillante face au Blizzard d’Edmundston dimanche après-midi au Centre Jean-Daigle par la marque de 5-4.
Nash Smith a été le seul joueur des deux côtés à déjouer le gardien de but adverse lors des tirs de barrage. Smith y est allé d’un tir vif qui a battu le gardien du Blizzard à sa droite.
Cette victoire permet du même coup aux Rapides de mettre un terme à une séquence de 9 revers consécutifs. La formation de Grand-Sault remporte également une première victoire en 2020 ainsi qu’un premier gain en deux saisons sur la patinoire du Blizzard.
Les Rapides avaient réussi à créer l’égalité en troisième période grâce au deuxième filet de la rencontre de Matthew Mackay lors d’une supériorité numérique à 7:19. MacKay a marqué sur un retour de lancer alors qu’il était bien positionné tout près de la cage du Blizzard.
Puis peu de temps après, soit à 8:31, Drew Toner a procuré les devants à Grand-Sault pour la première fois du match lorsqu’il s’est échappé seul en territoire du Blizzard. Ce dernier a battu le gardien d’un tir précis du côté le plus rapproché, portant le compte 4-3.
Le Blizzard n’avait cependant pas dit son dernier mot. Mitch McLeod a créé l’égalité à 17:22 lorsqu’il a réussi à pousser une rondelle libre derrière Nolan Boyd qui n’a pu la maîtriser avec sa mitaine.
Boyd a été une figure dominante dans la victoire, notamment en surtemps alors qu’il a multiplié les arrêts clés. Il a d’ailleurs sauvé un but certain de la part du Blizzard alors qu’il ne restait que 4 secondes à disputer en prolongation.
Boyd a également été parfait lors des tirs de barrage, ne cédant aucun but à ses adversaires.
Pour l’entraîneur Brad MacKenzie, la solide performance de Boyd ainsi que la prestation de la part des unités spéciales ont été les faits saillants majeurs dans la victoire.
« Pour remporter des matchs, nous avons besoin d’une solide performance de notre gardien de but ainsi que de nos unités spéciales, soit en avantage numérique et en infériorité numérique. Ces deux aspects de notre jeu ont vraiment fait la différence », mentionne MacKenzie qui ajoute que cette victoire permet de soulever un poids important sur les épaules de ses protégés.
« Nous avons discuté beaucoup dernièrement avec nos joueurs sur le fait de demeurer fidèle au système et au plan de match et c’est exactement ce que nous avons été capables d’accomplir aujourd’hui. Malgré un déficit de 2-0 et 3-2, nous avons été en mesure de créer l’égalité chaque fois et même si nous avons accordé le but égalisateur en fin de troisième période, nous avons su nous regrouper».
Ce fut un autre match typique entre ces deux rivaux du Nord-Ouest. L’indiscipline était au rendez-vous des deux côtés, mais l’intensité était tout de même bien présente.
Un seul but fut enregistré en première période alors que le Blizzard a dominé 12-4 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Chrystopher Collin a ouvert le pointage pour les locaux à 8 :07 lorsqu’il est parvenu à prendre possession de la rondelle devant la cage des Rapides pour ensuite la diriger d’une seule main derrière le gardien Nolan Boyd du côté le plus éloigné du filet. Pour Collin, il s’agissait d’un 32e but cette saison et d’un nouveau record d’équipe du côté du Blizzard.
Le deuxième engagement a été beaucoup plus physique cependant alors que plusieurs pénalités d’indiscipline ont été appelées des deux côtés.
Le Blizzard est parvenu à doubler son avance à 7 :41 sur le but de Paul Leroux qui a reçu une passe parfaite devant le filet de la part de Chrystopher Collin. Leroux n’avait qu’à glisser la rondelle dans une cage vide.
Les Rapides, qui ont démontré beaucoup plus d’intensité en territoire adverse en deuxième période, ont réussi à réduire l’écart à 8 :47 grâce au premier but de la saison du défenseur Tyler Browning qui y est allé d’un tir des poignets qui a trompé la vigilance du gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert alors que ce dernier avait beaucoup de circulation devant lui.
Puis lors d’une supériorité numérique à 13:22, la formation de Grand-Sault a créé l’égalité lorsque qu’un autre défenseur, Matthew MacKay, s’est amené tout près du cercle des mises en jeu pour ensuite diriger un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet. Encore une fois, le gardien du Blizzard avait la vue obstruée sur le jeu.
Avec un certain momentum acquis de leur côté suite au but égalisateur, les Rapides ont immédiatement écopé de quelques mauvaises pénalités, même que le Blizzard s’est retrouvé en situation de 5 contre 3. Avec une force d’attaque des plus puissantes en pareille situation, la formation d’Edmundston n’a pas tardé à reprendre les devants. C’est Evan White qui a enregistré le troisième but du Blizzard à 17:32 à l’aide d’un tir parfait dirigé à partir de l’enclave.
Le troisième engagement a été beaucoup moins robuste alors que les deux formations ont obtenu plusieurs bonnes chances de marquer.
Le Blizzard a dominé le match 43-29 au chapitre des tirs au but.
Grâce à sa solide performance devant le filet, le gardien Nolan Boyd a été sélectionné la première étoile du match. Matthew MacKay, avec deux buts, a été choisi la deuxième étoile. En plus de marquer le but victorieux lors des tirs de barrage, Nash Smith a ajouté 2 mentions d’aide à sa fiche, tout comme Bobby Labelle.
Pour le Blizzard, Evan White (1b 2p) et Tristan Gagnon (3p) ont chacun obtenu 3 points.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie mercredi soir alors qu’ils seront les visiteurs des Tigres de Campbellton à compter de 19h00 au Memorial Civic Centre.
