RAPIDS DEFEAT SOUTH SHORE 6-0
GRAND FALLS – Three unanswered goals registered in the opening period were enough for the Rapids on Friday night as they cruised to a 6-0 victory over the visiting South Shore Lumberjacks.
Gio DiMattia notched his first career shutout in the MHL, blocking all 30 shots he faced in the game.
Grand Falls wins for a 7th time this season and for a 5th time on home ice while also cutting the margin to within 5 points on the Campbellton Tigers and the Fredericton Red Wings in the Eastlink North division standings.
Dominic Leblanc led the way offensively with a pair, his 12th and 13th goals of the season. Leblanc and his linemates Yannic Bastarache (1g 1a) and Alexis Cournoyer (2a) were very hard to contain on Friday night as they seemed to be everywhere on the ice. Drew Johnston also had a good game offensively with 2 assists to his credit.
It was a well played game by the Rapids and despite the fact that the opening minutes of the game were quite even, Nick Tremere’s squad took control of the game at the 12th minute mark of the opening frame. Grand Falls scored on three occasions, all goals registered by the same offensive trio.
Following a give away at the Rapids’ blue line, Dominic Leblanc came on a breakaway and cashed in for his first goal of the night as his shot got by the stick side of goaltender Jeremy Robar, giving Grand Falls a 1-0 lead.
Leblanc added his second of the game and his 13th of the season at 14:01, scoring on a one-timer from the slot.
The Rapids added a third goal at 18:34 on a two-on-one break. Alexis Cournoyer sent a perfect pass to Yannic Bastarache who tallied his 8th of the season to bring the score to 3-0 in favour of the Rapids after twenty minutes of play.
The Rapids led at that point in shots on goal, 13 to 10.
The home team didn’t waste any time to add to their lead in the middle frame. Adam Fowlow sent a rebound in the top corner of the net for his 5th of the season, giving Grand Falls a 4-0 lead with only 32 seconds played in the period.
The Lumberjacks did however play with more intensity in the second period while also obtaining some good scoring chances.
The Rapids struck early in the third, adding two more goals. At 2:53, Jérémie Gagnon brought the score to 5-0 with a backhand shot on a rebound in front of the net. Then at 4:20, Spencer Desveaux took advantage of a break down from the South Shore defense, scoring top shelf on a breakaway for his 4th tally of the season.
Final shots on goal were 34-30 in favour of the Rapids.
The 554 spectators in attendance at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre went home very happy with their team’s solid performance in all facets of the game.
The Rapids return to action on Saturday night as they travel to PEI to clash with the first place Summerside Western Capitals. Puck drop is at 7pm at Credit Union Place arena.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 6-0 DEVANT SOUTH SHORE
GRAND-SAULT – Une poussée de trois buts sans réplique en première période a suffi aux Rapides qui l’ont emporté au compte de 6-0 vendredi soir à domicile aux dépens des Lumberjacks de South Shore.
Gio DiMattia, qui a bloqué tous les 30 tirs à lui faire face, a enregistré le jeu blanc, un premier en carrière pour ce dernier dans la LHM.
Cette victoire permet donc aux Rapides de signer une 7e victoire cette saison et une 5e à domicile, tout en leur permettant de s’approcher à 5 points des Tigres de Campbellton et des Red Wings de Fredericton au classement de la division Eastlink Nord.
Dominic Leblanc est celui qui a dirigé l’offensive des Rapides avec ses 12e et 13e filets de la campagne. D’ailleurs, le trio composé de Leblanc, Yannic Bastarache (1b 1p) et Alexis Cournoyer (2p) en a fait voir de toutes les couleurs à leurs opposants vendredi soir. Drew Johnston s’est lui aussi signalé en attaque avec une récolte de 2 mentions d’aide.
Les Rapides ont disputé un très bon match dans l’ensemble et malgré un début de rencontre où le jeu a été plutôt partagé des deux côtés, la troupe de Nick Tremere a pris le contrôle de la partie à partir de la 12e minute de jeu en première période. Ils ont d’ailleurs réussi à inscrire trois buts sans réplique, et ce, tous de la part du même trio en attaque.
Suite à un revirement à la ligne bleue des Rapides à 12 :23 du premier vingt, Dominic Leblanc s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre pour filer seul vers le gardien. Ce dernier n’a pas raté sa chance, déjouant le gardien Jeremy Robar des Lumberjacks d’un tir parfait du côté du bouclier.
Leblanc a ajouté son deuxième filet de la partie et son 13e de la saison à 14 :01, marquant à l’aide d’un tir sur réception devant le filet.
Grand-Sault a porté la marque 3-0 à 18 :34 lors d’une descente à deux contre un. Alexis Cournoyer a servi une belle passe à Yannic Bastarache devant le filet alors que ce dernier inscrivait son 8e de la campagne.
Les Rapides ont dominé 13-10 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période.
Les locaux n’ont pas tardé à ajouter à leur avance en deuxième période. Adam Fowlow a pris un retour de lancer devant le filet, déjouant le gardien dans la partie supérieure à 32 secondes de jeu seulement.
Les Lumberjacks ont tout de même offert une solide opposition aux Rapides en deuxième, obtenant quelques bonnes chances de marquer.
Les Rapides ont frappé tôt en troisième, inscrivant deux autres buts. À 2 :53, Jérémie Gagnon a porté le pointage 5-0 en dirigeant un tir du revers sur un retour de lancer devant le filet des Lumberjacks. Puis à 4 :20, Spencer Desveaux enfilait le 6e but des siens lors d’une échappée devant le gardien. Le tir de Desveaux a trouvé la partie supérieure du filet, un 4e but pour lui cette saison.
Le chiffre final des tirs au but était de 34-30 en faveur des Rapides.
Les 554 spectateurs présents à la rencontre ont sûrement été très heureux de la performance de leurs favoris qui ont disputé un match complet sur toutes les facettes du jeu.
Les Rapides seront sur la route samedi alors qu’ils rendront visite aux Western Capitals de Summerside à compter de 19h00 au Credit Union Place Arena.
