GRAND FALLS – Nathan Rhodes’ power play goal at 7:53 of the third period broke a 5-5 tie, leading the Rapids to an 8-5 victory Sunday night against the Fredericton Red Wings in an exhibition matchup played at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Rhodes completed a play in front of the opposing net, scoring his second goal of the contest.
Raphael Michaud and Declan Kennedy (empty net) completed the scoring in the final frame for the Rapids who won their second consecutive exhibition contest on home ice.
Brody Pare got the Rapids on the board at 4:04 of the opening period, but Fredericton tied the score 1:40 later on Anders Barbour’s wrister from the slot.
It was a wild second period as a total of four goals on each side were scored. Entering the period with a 1-1 tie, the Rapids took a 4-1 lead before the 6-minute mark of the frame on goals from Derek Bird, Nathan Rhodes and Brayden Campbell (shorthanded goal).
Justin Hughes (FRW) and Aiden Silvaggio(GFR) added goals for their resspective teamsbefore the Red Wings would mount a comeback with three unanswered goals in a span of less than 5 minutes. Yanik Felesakis(power play), Carter McIllwraith and Luke Power (shorthanded) had tied the score 5-5 leading into the final period.
The Rapids led 43 to 25 in shots on goal. Scott Leblanc and Loic Nadeau shared the work between the pipes. Zachary Bridgeo and Clay Ryan were in goal for the Red Wings.
The Rapids scored twice with the man advantage while Fredericton scored on one occasion.
The Rapids will play their next exhibition game on Wednesday night, once again on home ice, as they host the Edmundston Blizzard. Puck drop is at 7pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
