FREDERICTON – On Saturday night in Fredericton, the Rapids won their fourth game of the month of February as they earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Red Wings.
It was the 5th win for Grand Falls this season against Fredericton.
The Rapids have a total of 10 points added to the standings over their last 7 games for 35pts in all with 5 more games remaining to their 2024-2025 season.
It was the Red Wings that got first on the board in the opening period on a goal from Ryan Hopkins at 5:39.
The Rapids tied the score at 12:43. Brayden Campbell was able to go through two Red Wings’ defensemen before passing the puck to Nicholas Brennan who scored on the backhand. It was Brennan’s 12th goal of the season.
Shots on goal after twenty minutes of play were 8 to 7 in favour of Grand Falls.
Only one goal was scored in the middle frame, which happens to be the game winner. Immediately following a minor penalty to the Rapids, Jonah Leard made a great pass in front of the net to Cole MacWilliam who scored his 6th goal of the season to put his team ahead for good.
No goals were scored in the final period, despite a double minor penalty being assessed to the Rapids at the 14th minute of play of the period.
Adam Lecours made some brilliant saves during the final minutes of play, earning his 11th win of the season.
Frustration on the part of the Red Wings came up at the final buzzer as punches were thrown. Sanctions will most certainly follow those actions.
The final tally in shots on goal was 30 to 28 for Grand Falls.
The Rapids return on home ice for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the West Kent Steamers. Puck drop is set for 3pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
