RAPIDS DEFEAT MIRAMICHI 7-3
GRAND FALLS – Adam Fowlow scored three times while Dominic Leblanc finished the game with 1 goal and 3 assists, leading the Grand Falls Rapids to a 7-3 victory Wednesday night over the Miramichi Timberwolves at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre.
Keegan Hunt, Drew Johnston and Zac Arsenault completed the scoring for Grand Falls who won their 8th game of the season and their 6th on home ice. The victory allows Nick Tremere’s squad to cut the lead to 3 points on the Campbellton Tigers for sole possession of 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings. The Rapids’ record now stands at 8 wins and 10 losses for 16 points on the season.
It was the first of 12 games around the MHL focused on Indigenous recognition and reconciliation, an initiative sponsored by Scotiabank. Special jerseys were worn by both teams for the occasion at Wednesday night’s contest.
Each team got on the board with the man advantage in the first period. It was the Rapids who jumped to a 1-0 lead at 8:51 on defenseman Keegan Hunt’s second tally of the season and his first on the power play. His shot from the point found the back of the net with lots of traffic in front of the Timberwolves’ net.
Then at 18:57, Miramichi tied the score on a 5 on 3 power play. Jacob Santerre, with his 17th of the season, sent a one-timer past netminder Gio DiMattia who was solid in goal in the opening frame for the Rapids.
Grand Falls outshot their opponents 13 to 11 through twenty minutes of play.
Special teams were again responsible for the Rapids’ second goal of the game early in the second period. Following a miscue in the Miramichi end, Dominic Leblanc sent a pass in front of the net to Drew Johnston who beat goaltender Presley Lester at 1:17. That goal came while the Rapids were playing shorthanded, their 4th this season.
Three goals were scored thereafter in a span of less than a minute. Adam Fowlow tallied his 6th of the season at 12:31 with a wrister from the slot, then he added another goal 16 seconds later on a screen shot that found its way into the top hand corner of the net.
Miramichi didn’t waste any time to get back on the board. Only 13 seconds after Fowlow’s second of the game, Jeremy Jacob added the visitors’ second goal to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Numerous penalties were called in the middle frame as it became difficult for both teams to play at even strength.
Bad news for the Rapids however as Keegan Hunt had the leave the ice and did not return for the remainder of the game.
The Rapids added three unanswered goals in the third period to bring the score to 7-2. Dominic Leblanc scored his 15th of the season on a breakaway at 5:17 following a give away at the Rapids’ blue line.
Then at 8:09, Adam Fowlow completed his hat trick by sending a one-timer into the back of the net. It was Fowlow’s 8th goal of the campaign, reaching a personal best in the Maritime Hockey League.
Zac Arsenault added Grand Falls’ 7th goal after leaving his post at the blue line, sending a slap shot past netminder Morgan Kini who came into the game after the Rapids’ sixth goal.
Miramichi scored its third goal at 16:15 on a power play goal from Jeremie Hebert.
The final tally of shots on goal was 36 to 32 in favour of the Rapids. Gio DiMattia earned his 8th victory of the season between the pipes.
Grand Falls now hits the road for two important divisional matchups. Friday night, the Rapids are in Campbellton to face the Tigers while on Sunday, they travel to Fredericton for an afternoon matchup with the Red Wings.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT 7-3 CONTRE MIRAMICHI
GRAND-SAULT – Adam Fowlow a obtenu un tour du chapeau et Dominic Leblanc a récolté 1 but et 3 mentions d’aide, permettant aux Rapides de disposer des Timberwolves de Miramichi au compte de 7-3 mercredi soir au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal.
Keegan Hunt, Drew Johnston et Zac Arsenault ont complété le pointage pour les Rapides qui signaient une 8e victoire cette saison et une 6e à domicile. Ce gain permet à la troupe de Nick Tremere de s’approcher à 3 points des Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord. La fiche des Rapides est maintenant de 8 victoires et 10 revers pour 16 points.
Il s’agissait du tout premier match présenté dans le cadre de la semaine de reconnaissance et réconciliation avec les autochtones, une initiative commanditée par Scotiabank. Ce sont 12 parties du genre qui seront présentées à travers le circuit au cours des prochains jours. Des uniformes pour souligner l’occasion ont été portés par les deux formations en présence mercredi soir.
Chaque équipe s’est inscrite au pointage en première période lors d’une supériorité numérique.
Ce sont les Rapides qui ont été les premiers à noircir la feuille de pointage, soit à 8 :51, sur le deuxième but de la campagne du défenseur Keegan Hunt, marqué à l’aide d’un tir bas avec beaucoup de circulation devant le filet des Timberwolves.
Puis avec l’avantage de deux hommes en fin de période, Jacob Santerre a égalisé le pointage pour les visiteurs, permettant à Miramichi de niveler les chances après vingt minutes de jeu.
Les Rapides ont légèrement dominé au chapitre des tirs au but, 13-11. Gio DiMattia a été excellent devant la cage des siens, fermant la porte aux Timberwolves avec plusieurs arrêts clés.
Ce sont encore les unités spéciales qui ont été responsables du deuxième filet des Rapides en début de deuxième période. Profitant d’une bévue en zone adverse, Dominic Leblanc en a profité pour remettre la rondelle devant le filet à Drew Johnston qui n’a pas raté l’occasion d’inscrire son 4e but de la campagne. Il s’agissait d’un but enregistré en désavantage numérique pour les Rapides, un 4e pour eux cette saison.
Trois buts ont ensuite été inscrits en moins d’une minute d’intervalle. Adam Fowlow a fait bouger les cordages à 12 :31 avec un tir précis provenant de l’enclave, puis ce dernier a ajouté un deuxième but à sa soirée de travail seulement 16 secondes plus tard à l’aide d’un tir voilé dans la partie supérieure du filet.
La réplique des Timberwolves n’a pas tardé cependant alors que 13 secondes plus tard, Jeremy Jacob trompait la vigilance de Gio DiMattia avec un tir dans la partie supérieure, réduisant l’écart à deux buts du côté des visiteurs.
Le deuxième vingt a été un peu plus robuste avec plusieurs joueurs des deux côtés qui ont visité le cachot. Mauvaise nouvelle du côté des Rapides toutefois alors que Keegan Hunt a dû quitter la rencontre en raison d’une blessure.
Les Rapides ont ajouté trois buts sans réplique en troisième période pour augmenter l’écart à cinq buts. Dominic Leblanc a enregistré son 15e filet de la campagne sur une échappée à 5 :17 suite à un revirement à la ligne bleue des Rapides.
Puis à 8 :09, Adam Fowlow complétait son tour du chapeau à l’aide d’un tir sur réception. Il s’agissait d’un 8e but pour Fowlow cette saison qui atteint du même coup un sommet en carrière dans la Ligue des Maritimes.
Zac Arsenault a ajouté le 7e but de Grand-Sault. Ce dernier a marqué sur un tir puissant après avoir quitté son poste à ligne bleue pour se présenter tout près de l’enclave, battant le gardien Morgan Kini qui était venu en relève devant la cage après le 6e but des Rapides.
Miramichi a inscrit un troisième but au tableau à 16 :15 sur le but en avantage numérique de Jérémie Hébert.
Le chiffre total des lancers au but était de 36-32 en faveur des Rapides. Gio DiMattia s’est mérité une 8e victoire devant le filet de Grand-Sault cette saison.
Les Rapides disputeront leurs deux prochaines parties à l’étranger. Vendredi soir, ils seront à Campbellton pour disputer la victoire aux Tigres alors que dimanche après-midi, ils se rendront du côté de Fredericton pour affronter les Red Wings.
