RAPIDS DEFEAT EDMUNDSTON IN A SHOOTOUT
GRAND FALLS – Shon-Olivier Roy’s goal in the shootout frame gave the Grand Falls Rapids a 5-4 victory Friday night on home ice against the Edmundston Blizzard in a thrilling contest.
Roy was the only player from both teams to find the back of the net in extra time, allowing the Rapids to skate away with a second win this season against their rivals from the North West.
The 1165 spectators who were on hand at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre witnessed an exciting contest as the play became open and at a very fast pace at times, forcing both goaltenders to continually surpass themselves. In fact, Tyriq Outen (GF) and Ewan MacDonald (Edm) were both solid between the pipes, making numerous key saves.
The Rapids dominated the game in shots on goal, 41 to 34.
Dawson Wood led the way offensively for Grand Falls with 2 goals while Paul Leroux also scored twice for Edmundston.
It was also a return to the Rapids’ lineup for defenseman Patrick Musico after spending the first part of the season with the St.John Seadogs of the QMJHL. His presence was felt immediately as he had a good game at the blue line while also picking up 2 assists to his credit on the offensive front.
The Rapids opened the scoring first, at 5:05 of the opening frame. Adam Fowlow’s one-timer went slowly under Ewan MacDonald’s pads, eventually scoring his 2nd of the season. Shon-Olivier Roy picked up the assist as he served a perfect pass from behind the Blizzard net.
It didn’t take long however for Edmundston to tie the score. Paul Leroux scored only 29 seconds later as his quick wrist shot went over Outen’s shoulder. Leroux would then give his team the lead at 18:20 after taking a rebound in front of the net.
The Blizzard led 2-1 after twenty minutes of play.
The second period became a very open and offensive affair from the very beginning. Even though there were some real good battles in the corners and along the boards, it was the fastest skaters who took control of the puck more often than not.
Grand Falls took advantage of a power play to tie the score early in the period. Dawson Wood tipped in a shot from the point by Denis Toner, bringing the score all even at 2-2.
The Rapids regained the lead mid-way in the period when Matthew MacNeil also tipped in a shot behind goalie Ewan MacDonald. Drew Toner, who sent the initial shot towards the net, picked up an assist on the play.
However, as they did in the opening frame, the Blizzard stormed back immediately, scoring only 46 seconds later on a breakaway. Isaac Chapman got credit of the goal, his 14th of the season, beating the Grand Falls netminder on a backhand shot.
The teams skated off to a 3-3 tie after two periods of play.
Both teams fell into penalty trouble early in the third period. The Rapids were however the most opportunistic team, getting the go-ahead goal. Even though Edmundston’s minor penalty had just expired, the Rapids were able to keep the puck into the opposing zone. Following an attempted shot that never reached the net, Dawson Wood was able to take control of the loose puck to score his 2nd of the game.
The Blizzard tried very hard to tie the score, even sending only two offensive lines on the ice. They finally did cash in on Brock McLeod’s 13th goal of the season at 14:06 after his wrist shot found the upper corner of the net.
There was no scoring in the 5-minute overtime frame, even though both teams had some great chances to end the game.
Then in the shootout session, Tyriq Outen came up big once again, stopping all three shooters he faced while Ewan MacDonald was beaten only once: by Shon-Olivier Roy in the second round.
The victory kept the Rapids 4 points behind Campbellton and Fredericton in the Eastlink North division standings. Both of those teams won their respective contests on Friday night.
With his great performance in goal, Tyriq Outen was named the game’s first star while another Grand Falls player, Dawson Wood, received the game’s second star. Paul Leroux of the Blizzard was named the third star of the contest.
The Rapids will return to action on Sunday afternoon at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre as they will host the Fredericton Red Wings. Puck drop is at 3 pm.

LES RAPIDES L’EMPORTENT EN TIRS DE BARRAGE FACE AU BLIZZARD
GRAND-SAULT – Le but de Shon-Olivier Roy, marqué lors des tirs de barrage, a permis aux Rapides de Grand-Sault de soutirer une victoire de 5-4 vendredi soir à domicile aux dépens du Blizzard d’Edmundston.
Roy a été le seul joueur des deux côtés à déjouer le gardien de but adverse en temps supplémentaire, procurant ainsi aux Rapides une deuxième victoire cette saison face à leurs rivaux du nord-ouest.
Les 1165 spectateurs qui assistaient à cette rencontre disputée au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal ont été témoins d’un duel des plus enlevants alors que le jeu est devenu rapide et très ouvert par moments, forçant ainsi les deux gardiens en présence à se démarquer continuellement. D’ailleurs, Tyriq Outen (GS) et Ewan MacDonald (Edm) ont été solides devant leur cage respective, repoussant plusieurs attaques répétées de la part de leurs opposants.
Les Rapides ont dominé le match au chapitre des tirs au but, 41-34.
Dawson Wood a dirigé l’offensive des vainqueurs avec une récolte de 2 buts alors que Paul Leroux enfilait lui aussi l’aiguille à deux reprises du côté d’Edmundston.
Il s’agissait également d’un retour au jeu avec les Rapides pour le défenseur Patrick Musico qui s’alignait cette saison avec les Seadogs de St-Jean de la LHJMQ. Il a fait sentir sa présence en y allant d’une bonne performance à la ligne bleue ainsi qu’en attaque alors qu’il s’est mérité 2 mentions d’aide à sa fiche.
Les Rapides ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, soit à 5 :05 en première période. Après avoir reçu une passe parfaite devant le filet, Adam Fowlow a dirigé un tir qui est venu glisser lentement derrière le gardien MacDonald, inscrivant ainsi son 2e but de la campagne. Shon-Olivier Roy est celui qui avait servi la passe en provenance de l’arrière du filet du Blizzard.
Ces derniers n’ont pas tardé à niveler la marque alors que Paul Leroux y allait d’un tir précis au-dessus de l’épaule de Tyriq Outen seulement 29 secondes plus tard. Puis Leroux a donné les devants aux siens à 18 :20 en marquant sur un retour de lancer devant le filet.
Le Blizzard menait donc 2-1 au terme de vingt minutes de jeu.
La deuxième période fut disputée à vive allure alors qu’il semblait y avoir beaucoup d’espace sur la patinoire. Malgré quelques batailles féroces à l’occasion dans les coins de patinoire et le long des rampes, ce sont les patineurs les plus rapides qui ont pris possession de la rondelle plus souvent qu’à leur tour.
La formation de Grand-Sault a cependant profité d’une supériorité numérique tôt dans l’engagement pour égaliser le pointage. Dawson Wood a fait dévier un tir de la pointe de la part du défenseur Denis Toner, remettant le tout à la case départ.
Les Rapides ont repris les devants mi-chemin dans l’engagement lorsque Matthew MacNeil faisait lui aussi dévier la rondelle dans le fond du filet sur un tir du cercle des mises en jeu de Drew Toner.
Cependant, comme ce fut le cas en première période, la réplique du Blizzard n’a pas tardé à venir. Isaac Chapman venait créer l’égalité seulement 46 secondes plus tard sur une échappée, déjouant le gardien Outen d’un tir du revers.
Les deux équipes étaient donc à égalité 3-3 après quarante minutes de jeu.
Les deux formations se sont retrouvées tour à tour au banc des pénalités en début de troisième période. Ce sont cependant les Rapides qui en ont le plus profité. Même si la pénalité mineure du côté d’Edmundston venait tout juste de prendre fin, les Rapides ont été en mesure de conserver la rondelle en territoire adverse pour enregistrer un 4e but. Sur une tentative de tir qui ne s’est jamais rendu au filet, Dawson Wood a été très habile à récupérer la rondelle libre dans l’enclave pour ainsi enfiler son 2e du match.
Le Blizzard a tenté le tout pour le tout pour égaliser le pointage, y allant même avec seulement deux trios à tour de rôle sur la patinoire. Les visiteurs ont finalement été en mesure de niveler la marque à 14 :06 sur le 13e but de la campagne de Brock McLeod qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir vif dans la partie supérieure du filet.
Aucun but ne fut enregistré lors de la période de surtemps de cinq minutes, même si les deux équipes ont obtenu de bonnes chances de marquer.
Puis lors des tirs de barrage, Tyriq Outen a été solide, repoussant tous les trois tirs à lui faire face alors que Ewan MacDonald n’a été déjoué qu’une seule fois, soit par Shon-Olivier Roy lors du deuxième tour.
Ce gain permet aux Rapides de demeurer à 4 points de Campbellton et Fredericton au classement de la division Eastlink Nord. Ces deux formations ont également connu la victoire vendredi soir.
En raison de sa solide prestation devant le filet, Tyriq Outen a été choisi la première étiole du match du côté de Grand-Sault alors que Dawson Wood (2b) s’est mérité la deuxième étoile. La troisième étoile est allée à Paul Leroux du Blizzard (2b 1p).
Les Rapides seront de retour en action dimanche après-midi à compter de 15h00 au Centre E.&P. Sénéchal alors que les visiteurs seront pour l’occasion les Red Wings de Fredericton.
