RAPIDS COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN IN OT
PICTOU COUNTY – Down by two goals with under 5 minutes remaining in regulation time on Thursday night, the Grand Falls Rapids scored twice and defeated the Pictou County Weeks Crushers in overtime by a 4-3 score.
Jonah Leard, with 1 goal and 3 assists, ended the game by scoring on a breakaway at 4:10 of extra time.
Goaltender Adam Lecours played a vital role in the win, coming up with huge saves throughout the contest, but most notably in the overtime frame, even stopping an opponent from scoring on a breakaway.
Lecours faced a total of 40 shots, earning his 9th victory of the season between the pipes.
The Rapids got on the scoreboard first on a power play tally from Reid Calder at 15:59 of the first period.
Ryan Walsh tied the game for the Weeks Crushers at 4:42 of the middle frame. Kaden Smith gave Pictou County the lead at the 13-minute mark following a loose puck in front of the net.
Smith once again scored for the Weeks Crushers at 13:37 of the third period, giving his team a two-goal edge. But the Rapids came within one goal when Mathis Cyr’s shot found the back of the net on a power play at 15:29.
Then at 18:50, Nathan Plamondon-Michaud tied the score for Grand Falls with a wrister from the slot for his 11th of the season.
Lecours came up with some key saves in the overtime period. It was finally Jonah Leard who put an end to the game by beating netminder Yianni Karkoulas for his 7th goal of the season and his 2nd winning tally of the 2025-2026 campaign.
The Rapids thus put an end to a three-game losing streak and now take a 2-point lead over Chaleur atop the Eastlink North division standings.
Greg Leland’s squad will be in Yarmouth on Friday night to play the Mariners starting at 7pm.
