RAPIDS COME CLOSE AGAIN, BUT FALL 7-5 TO THE BLIZZARD
EDMUNDSTON – Less than 24 hours after trailing by 4 goals in Miramichi, the Rapids suffered the same fate on Sunday afternoon in Edmundston. This time however, Grand Falls was able to come back and tie the score but still fell short of a comeback, dropping a 7-5 decision to the Blizzard in front of a crowd of more than 2700 at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
Isaac Chapman scored the winning goal for the Blizzard at 11:23 of the third period, breaking a 5-5 tie. Chapman took control of a loose puck in front of the net, sending it between the pads of Nolan Boyd who had a strong game for the Rapids. Boyd came in relief of Outen in the first period after Edmundston took a 4-0 lead.
The Blizzard were ahead 5-3 at one point on Paul Leroux’s power play goal at the start of the third period. The Rapids staged a remarkable comeback however, tying the score. Lucas Joly netted his 2nd of the game at 1:53 after the puck suddenly came into the crease after a rebound from the back boards. Dawson Wood tied the score at 6:05 after he was able to push the puck into the net on a rebound.
Edmundston’s 7th goal was scored in an empty cage at 19:59 by Chrystopher Collin, his second of the contest. Collin then went on to challenge some Rapids’ players on the bench, resulting on a few skirmishes at game’s end.
For the Rapids, it was a second defeat in a row to start the new year. They now find themselves 8 points back of the Campbellton Tigers who hold the 4th spot in the Eastlink North division standings.
A STRONG START FOR THE BLIZZARD…
The Blizzard came out strong out of the gate, showing more speed than their opponents while being very aggressive on the puck carrier. This resulted in many turnovers in the Rapids’ zone as Edmundston was able to cash in on a few of those opportunities in the opening frame.
Chrystopher Collin was the first to add his name to the scoring sheet for the home team with only 42 seconds in. After eluding a Rapids’ defenseman, Collin came in alone on goaltender Tyriq Outen which he beat on a backhand shot between the pads. Shortly after that goal, at 1:49, Isaac Chapman doubled the lead for Edmundston on a one-timer following a two-on-one break.
The Blizzard took a 3-0 lead at 12:05 after a turnover behind the Rapids’ net. Felix Rioux took control of the puck and fed a great pass to Tristan Gagnon who was alone in front, scoring his 13th of the season. Then just 22 seconds later, Brock McLeod pushed the lead to 4-0 after he put in a rebound behind Outen who had made the initial save.
Nolan Boyd came in relief of Outen after that fourth Edmundston tally.
The Rapids were able to cut the lead at 14:36 on a rebound in front of the Edmundston net. Danny Griffith’s shot was first stopped by goalie Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert, but the puck found Lucas Joly’s stick as no.14 for Grand Falls added his 16th goal of the season.
Edmundston dominated 12-8 in shots on goal in the first period.
It was a whole different story for the Rapids in the second period as they were able to take advantage of their power play to come back into the game. Brad MacKenzie’s squad played a more physical style while Nolan Boyd made some spectacular saves, keeping hopes alive for the Rapids.
Two defensemen were the goal scorers with the man advantage for Grand Falls. Matthew MacKay was the first to find the back of the net at 4:06 on a perfect wrist shot in the top corner. Then at 17:57, Zac Arsenault sent a powerful slap shot past the Blizzard goalie to reduce the margin to a single goal.
The Rapids, who were behind 4-3 at that point, were dominant in the opposing zone, as demonstrated by shots on goal in the second period which went to Grand Falls’ advantage, 19 to 9.
In the third period, the Blizzard dominated 13-12 in shots on goal, but the Rapids had the advantage in the final tally (39 to 34).
Grand Falls came close to tying the game in the waning minutes of the period, but the Blizzard held on.
Isaac Chapman (2 goals including the game winner) was named the first star of the game. Lucas Joly (his 16th and 17th goals) received the second star. Two players from the Rapids also obtained 2 points as Matthew MacKay and Dawson Wood each finished the game with 1g and 1a.
Chrystopher Collin (2g 1a) was the game’s third star.
The Rapids will play their next contest on the road on Thursday night as they visit the Summerside Western Capitals, leaders of the Eastlink North division.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT 7-5 FACE AU BLIZZARD
EDMUNDSTON – À moins de 24 heures apès avoir tiré de l’arrière par 4 buts contre Miramichi, voilà que les Rapides se sont retrouvés dans la même situation dimanche après-midi à Edmundston. Cette fois cependant, la formation de Grand-Sault est parvenue à créer l’égalité face au Blizzard, mais a dû cependant s’avouer vaincue par la marque de 7-5 devant une foule de plus de 2700 spectateurs au Centre Jean-Daigle.
Isaac Chapman a inscrit le but de la victoire pour le Blizzard à 11:23 en troisième période, brisant ainsi une égalité de 5-5. Chapman a réussi à prendre possession d’une rondelle libre devant le filet pour ensuite la rediriger sous les jambières du gardien Nolan Boyd qui a été solide devant la cage des Rapides. Ce dernier est venu en relève à Tyriq Outen suite au 4e but du Blizzard en première période.
Le Blizzard avait pris les devants 5-3 avec le but de Paul Leroux lors d’une supériorité numérique en début de troisième période. Les Rapides ont cependant assuré la réplique en y allant de deux buts pour niveler la marque. Lucas Joly a enregistré son deuxième filet de la rencontre à 1:53 lorsque la rondelle s’est soudainement retrouvée devant le filet. Dawson Wood est celui qui a créé l’égalité à 6:05 lors d’une mêlée devant le filet. Wood a été en mesure de pousser la rondelle dans le fond de la cage sur un retour de lancer.
Le 7e but du Blizzard a été marqué dans un filet désert par l’entremise de Chrystopher Collin, son deuxième de la partie. Collin s’en est cependant pris par la suite à quelques joueurs sur le banc des Rapides, faisant en sorte que le match s’est terminé avec quelques échauffourées.
Pour les Rapides, il s’agissait d’un deuxième revers consécutif en cette nouvelle année. Les Rapides accusent actuellement un retard de 8 points sur les Tigres de Campbellton et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord.
LE BLIZZARD DÉBUTE EN FORCE…
Le Blizzard a entrepris le match en force, démontrant beaucoup plus de vitesse que leurs adversaires tout en étant très agressif sur le porteur de la rondelle. Par conséquent, la formation d’Edmundston a réussi à provoquer quelques revirements en zone adverse, ce qui a d’ailleurs été à l’origine de plusieurs buts lors de ce premier engagement.
C’est Chrystopher Collin qui a été le premier à noircir la feuille de pointage du côté du Blizzard, soit à 42 secondes de jeu seulement, lorsqu’il a réussi à déjouer un défenseur des Rapides pour finalement se retrouver seul devant le gardien Tyriq Outen qu’il a battu d’un tir du revers entre les jambières. Quelques secondes plus tard, soit à 1:49, Isaac Chapman doublait l’avance des locaux à l’aide d’un tir sur réception lors d’une attaque à deux contre un.
Le Blizzard a pris les devants 3-0 à 12:05 à la suite d’un revirement derrière le filet des Rapides. Félix Rioux a remis la rondelle à Tristan Gagnon qui s’est retrouvé seul devant Outen. Puis seulement 22 secondes plus tard, Brock McLeod augmentait l’avance d’Edmundston à 4 buts lors d’un autre surnombre en zone des Rapides. McLeod a marqué sur un retour de lancer devant le filet pour ainsi enregistrer son 20e filet de la campagne.
Nolan Boyd est venu en relève de Tyriq Outen devant le filet des Rapides suite à ce quatrième filet de la part du Blizzard.
Les Rapides ont réussi à s’inscrire au pointage à 14:36 sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Le tir de Danny Griffith avait d’abord été bloqué par le gardien Marc-Antoine Bérubé-Jalbert, mais Lucas Joly a récupéré la rondelle devant le filet pour ainsi enregistrer son 16e but de la saison.
Edmundston a dominé 12-8 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période.
Ce fut une histoire complètement différente pour les Rapides en deuxième période alors qu’ils ont profité de leur jeu de puissance pour revenir dans le match. La troupe de Brad MacKenzie a également été plus physique et le gardien Nolan Boyd a largement contribué en y allant de plusieurs arrêts spectaculaires.
Ce sont deux défenseurs qui ont touché la cible en supériorité numérique. Matthew MacKay a été le premier à marquer à 4:06 sur un tir des poignets dans la partie supérieure du filet. Puis à 17:57, Zac Arsenault a dirigé un tir frappé puissant dans le fond du filet pour réduire l’écart à un seul but.
Les Rapides, qui tiraient de l’arrière 4-3 après quarante minutes de jeu, ont été dominants en zone adverse lors du deuxième vingt, comme l’indique le chiffre des tirs au but: 19-9 en faveur de Grand-Sault.
En troisième, le Blizzard a dominé 13-12 au chiffre des lancers, mais les Rapides ont terminé le match en avance à ce chapitre, 39-34.
La formation de Grand-Sault est venue bien près d’égaliser le match en toute fin de rencontre, mais la défensive du Blizzard a tenu le coup.
Isaac Chapman (2 buts dont celui de la victoire) a été choisi la première étoile du match pour le Blizzard. Lucas Joly (ses 16e et 17e) a été nommé la deuxième étoile du côté des Rapides. À noter que Matthew MacKay et Dawson Wood ont également récolté 2 points pour Grand-Sault avec des performances identiques de 1 but et 1 aide.
Chrystopher Collin (2b 1p) a été choisi la troisième étoile du match.
Les Rapides disputeront leur prochaine partie jeudi soir à l’étranger alors qu’ils se mesureront aux meneurs de la division Eastlink Nord, soit les Western Capitals de Summerside.
