RAPIDS ARE DEFEATED 6-2 IN FREDERICTON

FREDERICTON – The Fredericton Red Wings scored six unanswered goals, including the last one in an empty net, as they defeated the Grand Falls Rapids by a score of 6-2 Friday night at the Grant Harvey Centre.

The Rapids remain 4 points behind the Miramichi Timberwolves for the fourth and final available playoff spot in the Eastlink North division with two games in hand. Grand Falls now falls to 16 wins and 17 losses on the season.

It started out like a positive outing for the Rapids as they jumped to a quick 2-0 lead. Josh Russell, who has been a great addition to the team, scored his 6th of the season at 5:09 of the opening period. After making the initial save on Mathis Huot’s wrist shot, netminder Mathias Savoie was unable to grab the rebound as Russell was first to pounce on the loose puck. Then at 7:46, a wrist shot from Jonathan Cormier from just inside the blue line found the back of the net to put the Rapids ahead by two goals. It was Cormier’s 2nd of the season, assisted by Will Morrison and Yannic Bastarache.

The Red Wings stormed back with two goals before the end of the period. Manix Sarrasin’ shot went through traffic and beat netminder Frédéric Plourde to cut Grand Falls’ lead to 2-1 at 12:52. Sam MacFarlane tied the score at 17:06 while the Red Wings were on the power play. After receiving the puck at centre ice, MacFarlane came with speed into Rapids’ territory, beating a defender then the goalie with a shot under the pads.

Fredericton led 18-14 in shots on goal after twenty minutes of play.

Only one goal was scored in the middle frame and it came very late. With only 23 seconds remaining on the clock, Zach Bishop scored from the slot, his 3rd of the season as the Red Wings went ahead for the first time, 3-2.

It was difficult for the Rapids to get some good scoring opportunities in the third period. The Red Wings were opportunistic, scoring at 4:55 on a rebound in front of the net. Manix Sarrasin added his second of the game while ex-Blizzard Mathieu Pelletier was the one who took the initial shot on net.

Dell Welton made it 5-2 at 14:19 on a shot from the face off circle while Nolan Stewart added Fredericton’s sixth goal into an empty net at 17:39.

The final tally in shots on goal was 45 to 38 in favor of the Red Wings.

The Rapids will be back in action on Sunday night (7:30 pm) as they host the Summerside Western Capitals who were victorious on Friday night in Edmundston.

LES RAPIDES S’INCLINENT DEVANT LES RED WINGS

FREDERICTON – Les Red Wings de Fredericton ont marqué six buts sans réplique, dont le dernier dans un filet désert, leur procurant une victoire de 6-2 vendredi soir à domicile face aux Rapides de Grand-Sault.

Les Rapides demeurent donc à 4 points de Miramichi et du 4e rang dans la division Eastlink Nord, et ce, avec deux matchs en main sur les Timberwolves. La fiche de Grand-Sault cette saison est maintenant de 16 victoires et 17 revers.

Tout avait pourtant bien débuté pour les Rapides qui avaient réussi à prendre les devants par deux buts tôt dans la rencontre. Josh Russell, qui a été une véritable bougie d’allumage depuis son arrivée avec l’équipe, a donné les devants à Grand-Sault à 5 :09 en première période. Après avoir effectué un premier arrêt sur le tir de Mathis Huot, le gardien Mathias Savoie des Red Wings n’a pu maîtriser le retour de lancer. Russel s’est emparé de la rondelle libre pour inscrire son 6e filet de la campagne.

Puis à 7 :46, le tir de Jonathan Cormier tout près de la ligne bleue a trouvé le fond du filet pour donner aux Rapides une avance de 2-0. Il s’agissait d’un deuxième but pour Cormier cette saison alors que Will Morrison et Yannic Bastarache se méritaient chacun une passe.

Les Red Wings ont toutefois assuré la réplique avec deux buts avant la fin du premier engagement. Le tir des poignets de Manix Sarrasin s’est faufilé jusque dans le fond de la cage alors que le gardien Frédéric Plourde avait la vue partiellement voilée. Le premier but des locaux est survenu à 12 :52. Sam MacFarlane est ensuite venu créer l’égalité à 17 :06 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Après avoir reçu la rondelle au centre de la patinoire, MacFarlane s’est amené avec beaucoup de vitesse en territoire adverse, déjouant un défenseur pour ensuite loger la rondelle sous les jambières du gardien.

Fredericton a dominé 18-14 pour les tirs au but en première période.

Seulement un but a été enregistré en deuxième période et il est survenu très tard dans l’engagement. Avec seulement 23 secondes à écouler au cadran, Zach Bishop a procuré aux locaux leur première avance dans la partie.

C’était donc 3-2 en faveur des Red Wings après quarante minutes de jeu.

Ce fut difficile pour les Rapides d’obtenir de bonnes chances de marquer en troisième période. Fredericton a été l’équipe la plus opportuniste, prenant les devants par deux buts à 4 :55 sur un retour de lancer devant le filet. Manix Sarrasin a été crédité de son deuxième filet de la rencontre, prenant le retour du tir de Mathieu Pelletier, l’ancien du Blizzard.

Dell Welton a marqué à l’aide d’un tir du cercle des mises en jeu à 14 :19 pour porter le compte 5-2. Le 6e but des Red Wings a été compté dans un filet désert à 17 :39.

À noter que les Red Wings ont dominé 45 à 38 au chapitre des tirs au but.
