CAMPBELLTON – Ben Nicholson scored with under 5 minutes remaining in regulation time, breaking a 3-3 tie and sending the Campbellton Tigers to a 5-3 victory Wednesday night against the Rapids.
Nicholson was sent alone in front of the net after receiving a pass from teammate Owen Underhill at the 15-minute mark of the third period.
Traling 3-1 after two periods of play, the Rapids came back to tie the score in the third on goals from Cole MacWilliam and Derek Bird. Jonah Leard, with his 19th of the season, scored the other goal for Grand Falls who was outshot 41 to 28 in the contest.
Tyler Pazin opened the scoring for Campbellton at 4:47 of the opening period. But the Rapids tied the score at the 11-minute mark of the frame on a goal from Jonah Leard. Caleb MacDonald and Brayden Campbell assisted on the goal.
One of the key points of the game occurred in the second period when the Tigers scored two goals in less than two minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead.
Mathis Guevin (power play) and Thomas Larouche were able to beat Rapids’ netminder Adam Lecours as they were both left alone in the slot.
The Rapids reduced the margin early in the third period on a power play goal from Cole MacWilliam who tipped a shot from the point by defenseman Raphael Denis.
Then Derek Bird tied the score at 14:02 following a scramble in front of the Tigers’crease.
It didn’t take long for the Tigers however to regain the lead as Ben Nicholson scored the go-ahead goal at 15:17. Tyler Pazin added anempty net tally at 18:43.
Tyler Pazin (2 goals) and Thomas Larouche (1g 2a) led the way offensively for the Tigers. For the Rapids, no player had more than 1 point to his record.
The Rapids return to the ice on Friday night as they host the Amherst Ramblers. Puck drop is at 7pm at the E.&P. Sénéchal Centre. It will be the Rapids’ last game on the schedule before the holiday break.
