RAPIDS ADD A THIRD CONSECUTIVE VICTORY
MIRAMICHI – The Rapids scored three unanswered goals in the second period and added three more in the final frame as they defeated the Miramichi Timberwolves by a score of 7-4 Saturday night.
It was a third consecutive victory for Grand Falls who now total 11 points on the season.
Leading 4-1 entering the third period, the Rapids held off a comeback from their opponents who were able to cut the margin to a single goal on two occasions. Vincent Drolet put the game away with less than two minutes remaining, bringing the score to 6-4. Drew Toner added the 7th Rapids’ goal in an empty net at 19:58.
Carter McCluskey had a strong game offensively with a performance of 2 goals and 1 assist as he pushed his point total for the season to 14 points (7g 7a). Drew Toner also contributed with 1 goal and 3 assists.
The Rapids outshot Miamichi 47 to 38 as Gio DiMattia picked up the win between the pipes.
Head coach Brad Mackenzie liked the way his troups were able to keep their focus and get the job done.
“It certainly wasn’t a perfect game on our part, but we remained focused on doing our job. I thought we managed the momentum swings well tonight and didn’t let goals scored by the other team unravel us,” mentions Mackenzie.
Two goals were scored in the first period as the Timberwolves were first to get on the board. At the 5-minute mark, Said Abi-Faycal tallied his first of the season after he lobbeb the puck over netminder Gio DiMattia’s shoulder.
The Rapids tied the score at 15:47, immediately after a minor penalty to the Timberwolves had expired. Standing alone in the slot, Carter McCluskey fired a wrister into the top corner of the net for his 6th tally of the season.
Miramichi led in shots on goal in the period 14 to 12.
The Rapids dominated the middle frame with their quick transition game while keeping their opponents deep into their own territory. They were rewarded by their solid play, scoring three goals on 16 shots on net.
Carter McCluskey added his second of the game at 3:20 when he fired a loose puck past goalie Daniel Moody. At 9:11, as the Rapids’ came in on a two-on-one break, Nash Smith scored on a one-timer in front of the net for his 6th of the season. Then at the end of the period (17:46), the Rapids scored their fourth goal after controlling the play deep into the opposing end. Kyle Foreman was the recipient of the goal, his 4th of the season.
Grand Falls held a 4-1 lead through two periods of play.
The Timberwolves caught the Rapids on their heels early in the third period, scoring two quick goals to cut the lead to 4-3. Spencer Blackwell, at 3:43, and Brendan Milson (shorthanded at 5:02) gave hope to the locals as they tried to stage a comeback. But just 38 seconds later, while still playing with the man advantage, the Rapids added their 5th goal on Zac Arsenault’s hard shot that found the far corner of the net. After Jeremy Jacobs reduced the margin to 5-4 for Miramichi, Vincent Drolet and Drew Toner put the game away for good.
After completing a sweep of their two-game road trip, the Rapids will return home next weekend as they host the Edmundston Blizzard on Friday night and the Campbellton Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

LES RAPIDES REMPORTENT UNE TROISIÈME VICTOIRE CONSÉCUTIVE
MIRAMICHI – Les Rapides ont marqué trois buts sans réplique en deuxième période et en ont ajouté trois autres lors du dernier engagement, en route vers une victoire de 7-4 samedi soir à Miramichi face aux Timberwolves.
Il s’agissait d’une troisième victoire consécutive pour les Rapides qui totalisent maintenant 11 points au classement de la mini-division Eastlink Nord.
En avance 4-1 avant d’entreprendre la troisième période, les Rapides ont failli se faire jouer un vilain tour alors que les Timberwolves ont réussi à deux reprises à réduire l’écart à un seul but. Vincent Drolet est venu assurer la victoire aux visiteurs avec moins de deux minutes à écouler au match, portant le pointage 6-4. Drew Toner a ajouté le 7e filet des siens dans une cage déserte à 19 :58.
Carter McCluskey a connu un bon match en attaque avec une récolte de 2 buts et 1 mention d’aide, ce qui porte son total de points jusqu’ici cette saison à 14 (7b 7p). Drew Toner a également offert une solide prestation avec une récolte de 1 but et 3 passes.
Les Rapides ont dominé leurs adversaires au chapitre des tirs au but, 47-38. Gio DiMattia est celui qui a récolté le gain devant le filet.
L’entraîneur-chef Brad Mackenzie a aimé la façon dont sa troupe a été en mesure de garder le focus malgré la remontée de leurs opposants.
« Encore une fois, nous avons trouvé le moyen d’effectuer le travail. Ce n’était sûrement pas un match parfait de notre part, mais nous avons été capables de gérer le changement de momentum, sans nous laisser trop abattre, » mentionne Mackenzie.
Deux buts ont été enregistrés en première période alors que les Timberwolves ont réussi à prendre les devants avec le premier filet de la campagne de Said Abi-Faycal qui a marqué après avoir soulevé la rondelle au-dessus de l’épaule du gardien Gio DiMattia.
Les visiteurs ont égalisé le pointage à 15 :47, au même moment que venait de s’écouler une pénalité mineure du côté des Timberwolves. Situé seul dans l’enclave, Carter McCluskey y est allé d’un tir des poignets qui a trouvé la partie supérieure du filet. Il s’agissait de son 6e but de la campagne.
Miramichi a dominé au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, 14-12.
La formation de Grand-Sault a dominé le deuxième engagement grâce à son jeu de transition rapide, tout en repoussant leurs adversaires au fond de leur propre territoire. Les Rapides ont d’ailleurs été récompensés pour leurs efforts alors qu’ils ont touché la cible à trois reprises sur 16 tirs au filet.
Carter McCluskey a enregistré son deuxième but du match à 3 :20 après avoir pris un retour de lancer tout près du filet. Lors d’une descente à deux contre un, Nash Smith (son 6e de la saison) a marqué à l’aide d’un tir sur réception à 9 :11. Puis vers la fin de l’engagement, soit à 17 :46, les Rapides ont ajouté un 4e but après avoir réussi à contrôler le jeu pendant de longs instants en territoire adverse. Kyle Foreman, avec son 4e de la campagne, est celui qui avait porté la marque 4-1 en faveur de Grand-Sault après quarante minutes de jeu.
Les Timberwolves sont venus surprendre les Rapides avec deux buts sans réplique tôt en troisième période, réduisant du même coup l’écart à un seul but. Spencer Blackwell (à 3 :43) et Brendan Milson (en infériorité numérique à 5 :02) ont redonné espoir aux locaux. Seulement 38 secondes plus tard, alors que l’on évoluait toujours avec l’avantage numérique, les Rapides ont ajouté un 5e but par l’entremise de Zac Arsenault qui a marqué à l’aide d’un tir puissant en direction du côté le plus éloigné du filet.
Jeremy Jacobs a réduit l’écart à 5-4 pour Miramichi lors d’une supériorité numérique, mais Vincent Drolet et Drew Toner sont venus assurer la victoire aux Rapides.
Après avoir complété un balayage lors de leur voyage de deux matchs à l’étranger, les Rapides seront de retour à domicile le week-end prochain pour affronter le Blizzard d’Edmundston vendredi soir et les Tigres de Campbellton dimanche en après-midi.
